The issue of rations was examined by the CAG in 2010 in great details, The scaling of rations have been revised as per extensive examination and rescaling by Life Sciences Lab of the DRDO. From the previous 4 Scales today there are 17 scales of rations with lots of varieties and substitutions. The scales have been worked out according to energy expenditure and requirements of the job and terrain.
Between officers and soldiers, there is a difference between items and taste. Many items like Ham and bacon are not supplied to troops as they do not consume and like it. In fact very large numbers of Indian troops are vegetarian. A recruit or a cadet has different energy requirements and have different scales, Energy requirements of a pilot are different from other officers, Similarly the energy requirements of a submariner is different from other sailors. Calories required in high altitude is different than plains. There is no diffrence between soldiers and officers in caloric value. A soldier gets more atta or rice and dal, an officer gets more sugar, a jawan get more tea and an officer can be given some coffee as a substitute, That is all to cater for taste, habits and environment,
All scales have been worked out very rationally, catering for taste, variety and availability of items. In high altitude where eggs may not be available, egg powder of equal caloric value is issued. If milk is not available, milk powder is issued.
