For me your assessment is . The question is deep. However, it may be that:
(1) The 'response expected' may itself be an fallacy created by our minds.
(2) When the reds moved their pieces, they did not factor in such a muscular response, resulting in an evolving situation where even a tactical loss has strategic implications for them. To therefore balance the risk-return profile, they have to be sure of tactical gains at least and strategic gains at best. They now ain't sure of either.

I think they are stuck up big time. They cannot be reasonably sure of winning it even after a major escalation. Tactical withdrawal for them is serious loss of face and capital (almost impossible). If they throw Pakis under the bus as a bargain, their string of pearls is broken not so much cuz Pakis are precious but cuz the reds lose standing amongst their supporters.

Indians have not penetrated as yet. They are still in their area. So far Indian Army has only won a war against CSG.

War will start if Indians are able to overcome the Chinese limit of penetration. So far the Indian Army is rolling them back from wherever the Indian Army assess that they have started posing a military threat.

It is just begun and the situation is manageable and tolerable both sides, Chinese will start reacting voilantantly when the Indian Army walks over Moldo, Srijap, Kongkha, River post etc which is going to happen if Chines do not execute a tactical withdrawal ..
