I like the fact that the engine is from Turbomeca. Once it is assembled in India, over a period of time many components will be made by Indian manufacturers who in turn will be encouraged to go in for FAA certification. In the long run this will work out very well for the domestic industry.

lots of them. HAL still to come out with report on the crashes in Siachen. Main reason why ALH still has not replaced the cheetah and why we are looking at imported options.

India picks Russian Ka-226T as RSH rotorcraft
India's national aircraft-building corporation Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is Russia's most likely partner for the joint production of Kamov Ka-226T multi-purpose helicopters, Press Trust of India news agency reported on Thursday.

The decision taken by New Delhi's Defence Acquisition Council on 13 May to manufacture Russia’s Kamov Ka-226T "Sergei" light helicopter in India brings to a close a long and torturous saga to procure 197 reconnaissance and surveillance helicopters (RSH) for nation's army and air force.

The army and air force have had pending requirements for over a decade to acquire 133 and 64 RSH aircraft, respectively, to replace their ageing Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) Cheetah and Chetak light helicopters.

Kamov's Ka-226T is to be acquired via a government-to-government deal, which will also lead to the creation of a joint venture between HAL and Russian Helicopters, reports Flightglobal.

A production capacity of 30-40 helicopters per year is envisaged, with a requirement for indigenous content to amount to 30% within three to four years of work commencing in India.

The Ka-226T is fitted with Turbomeca Arrius 2G1 engines. HAL has an existing separate partnership with Turbomeca for the production of TM333-2B2 and Ardiden 1H1 (Shakti) engines in Bengaluru.

Once introduced, the co-axial Ka-226T light helicopter will be used by the Indian services for roles such as armed reconnaissance, the direction of artillery fire, insertion of quick reaction teams for special missions, plus forward air control and casualty evacuation.

The Ka-226T light multi-purpose helicopter was developed by Russia's Kamov design bureau and is designed to transport up to 1 ton of cargoes and personnel to a distance of 450 km (280 miles).

The purchase of this helo is for BRO not IAF, And KA-226 and other are inferior to Dhruv and not replacing it anywhere ..

Dhruv is ALH and KA-226 and cheetah are ULH and both of different category, HAL`s ULH is design to replace Cheetahs ..

Main reason why ALH still has not replaced the cheetah and why we are looking at imported options.

If the need for Cheetah replacement was so urgent, then why didn't they just make more of them. We just sold 3 to the Afghans. By doing this aren't trudging on HAL LUH's space. I don't think any country in the world would splurge on foreign acquisitions when a domestic alternative is available & in production.
