Fuel stocks dwindling

Uncertainty looms over the country's fuel stock as the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation is finding it difficult to import fuel amid a dollar shortage at local banks.

The corporation currently has less than 40 days' worth of fuel reserves, which is well below the standard practice of keeping 40-45 days' worth of stock, BPC officials told this correspondent yesterday.

An emergency meeting will be held today at the PMO to review "the whole scenario of energy supply, power generation and distribution".

Banks are not being able to open letters of credit to import petroleum because of an acute shortage of dollars in the country's forex market, said a "very urgent" letter sent on July 5 by the energy and mineral resources division to the finance ministry, PMO and economic relations division

At today's meeting, BPC officials may propose reducing the number of vehicles on the roads by having vehicles with odd and even registration numbers plying roads on alternate days, and also seek to curtail office and school hours, officials said.

The aim is to reduce the demand for fuel by at least 50 percent, BPC sources said.

Meanwhile in the Asian domestic- cat economy...

The state minister said, "From today, production at diesel-run power plants will be stopped. As a result, there will be 1,000MW less electricity produced. Following this, load shedding will increase across the country periodically. Load shedding will occur for one hour throughout the country periodically."

"We also have a gas crisis. Due to this reason as well, electricity generation has decreased," he said.

"The total electricity generation will decline by 1,500-2,000MW. When the power outage will occur and in which areas, we will inform in advance," he added.

When asked about petrol pumps, he replied, "A final decision on the closure of petrol pumps is yet to be taken. We will discuss the issue. The decision will be taken with consultation of the concerned, including the fuelling station owners."

Can't even afford fuel, lol. Asian Tiger Economy:pound: :pound:
On a more serious note, as far as the foreseeable future holds, global economy will keep getting royally fucked. Truly a crisis of the century; deadlier than the recession of 2008 and with greater longevity. Many, many emerging economies will default, proto industrial EMs like BD; that have a weird combination of CAD, remittance dependency, low tax base and low economic complexity; are more vulnerable. A few hours of daily powercuts is perhaps a small price to pay in order to save precious forex.

We, in India, will be damn lucky if we scrape through with a 6.5-7% ish growth over this period.

Another murder of a Hindu.

Ashraful Islam Jitu, now an expelled student of Haji Yunus Ali School and College in Savar’s Ashulia, has ‘confessed’ to fatally attacking teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker in a statement to a court.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Rajib Hasan recorded Jitu's statement on Wednesday under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure that can be used as evidence during trial.

Police said Jitu described the motive and the incident in the statement. The court later sent him to jail.

Jitu's father Ujjal Hossain also gave a confessional statement on Tuesday. Police arrested Ujjal from Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia on Jun 28, a day before the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Jitu.

Both Ujjal and Jitu were placed on five-day remand each in the case in police custody.

The 19-year-old Jitu was produced before the court after the interrogation by Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Emdadul Haque, the investigating officer of the case.

Utpal, a lecturer of political science, was also the chairman of the institution's disciplinary committee.

Jitu, a tenth-grader, attacked Utpal with a cricket stump at the institution on Jun 25. Utpal died in hospital two days later.

Describing the incident, Principal Saiful Hasan said the student started beating Utpal indiscriminately when the teacher was watching a cricket match.

Utpal’s brother Ashim Kumar Sarker said Utpal had corrected the attacker for sexually harassing female students. According to him, that was the reason behind the attack.

After Jitu's arrest, RAB said that Utpal had asked Jitu not to hang out with a girl of grade 11 at the institution. Jitu carried out the attack in an attempt to show heroism to that girl. The institution expelled Jitu and suspended the girl pending investigation after the incident.

The incident sparked massive outrage as locals and students staged protests demanding Jitu's arrest. They also raised questions about Jitu's age being recorded as 16 in the case.

The criminal justice system in Bangladesh requires people under the age of 18 to be tried as juveniles, leading some to wonder whether Jitu was gaining an unfair advantage by being identified as a minor.

The RAB collected his Junior Dakhil Exam Certificate, which mentions his date of birth as Jan 17, 2003, not a minor as assumed earlier. Jitu had faced many disruptions to his academic life, the RAB explained.
Okk so these are the people of Dhaka,so liberal and progressive they are that they can't tolerate a Hindu, and also we sylotis are so backward and regressive that we have largest Hindu population after khulna and Chittagong. No wonder Dhaka is hell on earth.
