British colonized coastal areas, islands and then fertilie agricultural land .
They were not interested in sparsely populated mountainous regions like Tibet,nepal, Afghanistan or any central asian country

Japan and America were each other's chief rivals at the time and given the scale of the US sanctions after Japan's intervention in China and French Indochina, it was clear the US was eventually going to fight a war with Japan.

If there was going to be a war, Japan thought it was better to strike while it had the superior navy and air force and when the US was in an economic crisis, rather than wait for the US to recover, build up its military, and strike first at a time of its choosing.
