Why stage 2 training cannot be done on EITHER hawk OR sitara??
Is it necessary for every cadet to fly hawk?

There is no question of dropping htt-36 project

Iaf had in the past already asked to HAL to stop the development

HAL said it will go ahead and complete the development and the project with its own money even if iaf is not interested

And I think that is the right approach

Because

It will complete the product development cycle

Give chanch to HAL to analyze where it went wrong - what & why rectification needs to be done
I.e. learning & knowledge curve

And at the end HAL will have a finished product which s ready to be ordered in the next round of orders

Sincebif sitara is ready iaf can hardly ask for imports

And

HAL should not only stop at getting sitara certified but regurly review the scenario and keep upgrading the sitara upto the current times requirements

The notional LCA-LIFT would replace the MiG-21 conversion that was done at MOFTU. From the LCA training, the pilots would move on to operational squadrons.

You can train all you want in operational squadrons but:

a. Eat into airframe, engine hours thus affecting your overall availability since overhauls will come up sooner.

b. Introduce risk of accidents

c. Distract from operational commitments.

The Navy air arm being much smaller, the effect of having, or not having a LIFT squadron will be more pronounced. But most importantly, it will give STOBAR training to pilots.

From technology and commercial perspective, ADA/HAL can probably field a LCA Mk-1 based Navy trainer much sooner than the Mk-2 Navy aircraft.

I like the idea of LCA trainer. But won't it introduce too many training categories.

I think it makes sense to order LCA trainers.

This should come up when production line capacity is enhanced.

Spin trials to revive intermediate jet trainer programme soon

NEW DELHI: The indigenously designed ‘Sitara ’Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), which has gone through a troubled developmental phase that includes a crash in 2011, is set to revival with its designers planning to put the aircraft through fresh wind tunnel tests after a design upgrade.

Top officials involved in the project told ET that the plan is to put the trainer aircraft through the crucial Spin Test - in which the plane is deliberately allowed to stall midair and recovered as part of the training process – within the next six months.

The IJT programme, a Rs 2,989-crore project that commenced in 1999, had hit a dead end after the aircraft failed to demonstrate its ability to get out of a stall and spin, a critical feature needed in a trainer aircraft that would be flown by rookie pilots. Its developer HAL had to call in external consultant BAE Systems in 2014 for a redesign of the aircraft tail to meet the stall specifications of the air force.

“We are conducting a few more wind tunnel tests and should be read for a final round of the spin test within the next six months,” a senior official told ET. The IJT has met other specifications of the air force but has not been able to meet this critical safety test, forcing a change in the pilot training programme.

The air force is in dire need of an intermediate trainer jet as the current `Kiran Mk II’ aircraft fleet used for the training is being phased out.

Faced with a paucity of trainer aircraft, the air force has rejigged its pilot training program from a three aircraft plan to a three stage, two aircraft plan.

"There has been no marked progress in the IJT programme," a senior HAL official said at Aero India 2017 show held in mid-February Bangalore.

However, he added, efforts are still underway to try and re-design the HJT-36's tail to resolve issues linked to the platform's critical stall and spin characteristics to provide trainee pilots with greater manoeuvrability of the aircraft.

Senior Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said that until these issues are rectified, the HJT-36 would remain "unfit" for use as an IJT for fighter pilots.

This is in contradiction to the news that all problems are resolved except spin trials in which a significant progress is being made. Aircraft entered into spin and recovered rapidly.

This spin issue should have been mastered long back. HT2 seemed to fail in this aspect too. HAL has not learned to master it in so many years, dont think they can master it.
