I suspect the assault rifle and carbine trials are for the troops that are employed in COIN and need newer weapons urgently , RR battalions etc .
The DRDO rifle will equip the rest of the army . It will take years for the multi calibre rifle to be accepted . First the prototypes have to finish the different trials then the production versions have to finish trials with different units only then will there be a full scale production run .

Yup looks like they want to replace those old AKMs in the RRs inventory. The guns have outlived their lives.

The failed Multi-cal rifle procurement was intended for Regular Infantry, For specific CT ops the requirment was given for 7.62x39mm barrel ..

Now as they failed, New Indian design Rifle which is based on 1b1 is filling the need for 7.62x39mm within RR and will be replacing AKM, While the units will be using 1B1s chambered for 5.56mm but both rifle will share lot more common parts ..

.
The latest I've heard is the foreign muli-cal buy is still on and is intended for the RR and those in COIN ops. The IA is massively preparing for the US drawdown in Afghanistan and these rifles are being fast tracked (as well as other critical equipment for the RR).

The IA recently held the latest series of trials for these rifles.

Their are countless news can be heard from Independent sources within Indian media which cannot be credited as solid, Many such article came around before speaking behalf of various firms Independently, But officially these rifles failed in Notorious High altitude and Desert terrains in India ..

About Indian Rifle, Ishapore 7.62x39mm is already backed orders of first 50,000 units and more on the way for CT ops, For Army as well as Paramilitary ..

This is the AK-7 rifle, The production is said to be stropped when Kalashnikov Visited OFB stall in Defexpo and requested that his design not to be used without license ..

In the below link its the same rifle but in wooden stock and without gas regulator as in the above picture ..

Sir,I guess this is not the OFB A7 since the OFB model was fitted with a slant cut muzzle brake where as this piece in the picture isn't.

Their were many variants of AK-7, The first came out was green with SLR muzzle flasher, Then it was the one i am holding back in 2008, Then it came out in Orange furniture as 1B1, Then wooden furniture ..

============

Are you talking about 1B1 ? , SLR worked out well in Indian Armed forces and still active in Paramilitary forces, Why tilting bolt has issues in Indian conditions ? , Are you talking about 1B1 or SLR ?..

For reference >

If it has the tilting bolt .. it is not a good thing.

if multical rifile tender failed why cant we use Israeli Tavor assault rifle to replace INSAS and i hope it was proved some extent in indian conditions
we have been using this since 5-6 years in other forces, is it not suitable in cold conditions?
can we use a bullpop design as a main assault rifile for soldiers?

Some info relate to ARX family, not much about weapons, but some related indication and info for accessory for comparation with Indian Futuristic Infantry Soldier.

Beretta has officially presented also the ARX 200 in 7.62x51 NATO caliber and the Italian Army has bought the first test batch of 800 ARX 200 in 7.62 NATO caliber for the squad marksmen for 2.5 milion euro... so about 3,125 euro each, but the price includes a integrated Steiner optics, reflex, 14" and 18" barrels.

As indication for indian Futuristic Infantry Soldier... Italian program "Soldato Futuro" has ditched and terminated devenlopment the integrated Selex multifucion optics system (seems that only the French for now with the Felix system got a operative use as custom integrated optics)... and go for a off the shell commercial solution (partially already in use and distribution in the italian army).

Personally I appreciate it ... the private market for certain types of things (as small weapons and weapon accessories) is the best... once established standards is better than the private market fight for find the best and cheapest solution.

Some more little info here

Well it will be all excellent to use the TAR-21 and the X-95 on our forces but then such a decision will kill the indigenous ARDE MCIWS. Best for us would be that this multi-cal rifle tender fails and we wait for 3-4 more years till MCIWS matures and passes all the tests!

Yes the TAR-21 and X-95 is very reliable and works very well in the cold conditions.

We can use a bullpup design but then it will make it too complicated for the regular infantry as they dont require a complex weapon because it will make it difficult to maintain. Regular soldiers dont need a complex weapon rather a reliable and easy to maintain weapon!

MCIWS is as good as any foreign weapon provided that minimum changes should be done like decent railing system , gun barrel, gun metals

without providing railing system how will use optics
best metal composition helps in gun weight reduction

It already has a rail system with a full size rail above, below and a quad rail section also! Gun also uses many alloys and plastics!
