If I'm not wrong then Fregat are simple surface search radar that provides targetting data to the Shtil "system", they themselves are not targetting radar.

So as long as you have those 3K92E1 radar illuminators you can use very much any good 3D radar to fire Shtil missiles.

Coming to VL-SRSAM, it's way way more advanced than Shtil. One, it has onboard datalink and probably the most important, it's active radar homing not semi-active like Shtil or Buk where you need an illuminator to constantly focus on a target.

We can use virtually any radar to guide the missile using datalink and then switching to active-seeking as soon as its onboard radar seeker detects the target.

Edit : You asked about Fregat's replacement too. Sorry, missed that
We recently signed for Lanza-N radar, those can pretty well be the replacement. Rather they're better in almost all criteria, from range to weight
Thank you for the explanation.

We are currently using different radars on our capital warships. For example:
1. MFSTAR + RAWL- 02 (P-/15A/15B)
2. Fregat + RAWL- 02 ( P-15)
3. Fregat + STAR (P-17)
4. Fregat (P11356)

In future, we will be having:
MFSTAR + Lanza-N

I get confused sometimes, like MFSTAR is the MFR and RAWL-02/Lanza-N are ASR so they make a great pair. P-17 has Fregat + STAR which makes sense as one is ASR and other is MFR. But then why were we using Fregat + RAWL-02 on P-15 class?

PS: Does anyone know which radar are we using aside of RAWL-02 on Brahmputra class? Previously, it was RAWS-03 but now it looks like STAR.

Let's make it even more simple; why are we having two radars in the first place!?

US Arleigh Burkes had so many different types of radars ranging from surface search to illuminators, but when the moved to Zumwalt they replaced most of them with just a single AN/SPY-3 system.

Germans had a combination of SMART-L search and APAR targetting radar on their Sachsen class frigates. When the moved to Baden-Württemberg...simple, just a Cassidian TRS-3D system.

Same goes for Israel. Combination of EL/M-2228 and EL/M-2218 on Sa'ar 5. But in Sa'ar 6 it's just a single MF-STAR.

I think Godavari and Brahmaputra both were supposed to get STAR

Some officials once said they can carry out Super Sukhoi upgrade without Russian help.
Anything in that regards. These planes need to survive and thrive till 2050s.
At this point of time we can either get or outsource every single thing on a Su-30MkI except the engines.

Better radar? We have Uttam. Uttam is not mature enough? Get ELM-2052 Local startups can upgrade the cockpit. ESM and ESSM can be sourced from BEL. If they want more advanced, you have Elta or Elbit. From ASRAAM to guided bombs, the full armament suite is available.

But it feels they've moved on from the idea of fleet wise Super Sukhoi upgrade and now it's like Theseus's ship...one part gets too outdated, replace it and wait for next part to get.

Ukraine Russia war thread is the gem of DFI; on one end of the spectrum pro-Ukrainians mock how Russian weapons are outdated and on the other pro-Russians celebrate Ukrainian soldiers getting killed. More or less it's the patten there. Other than that you'd find occasional Ukraine is Nazi too.
Don't kid yourself. You contributed to it too.

Are the Russians even able to supply the semi knocked down kits with the war still ongoing? They must have lost a large percentage of their air force that will need replacing.
No they didn't lose a large percentage of their air force. Most of the losses they incurred is mostly Su-25s.
