Why not buy the drdo l&t tank for the entire requirement rather than looking out for some other design. Unless they are just looking for a production agency.
First, the prototype is yet to be rolled out. How order could be placed on something which exists only on paper?

So services has given a minimum number guarantee which would cover the development cost. After that it would be a open bidding where DRDO/L&T product too could compete.

No clue about its veracity but have you guys ever wondered why's it that the Su-57 has never been offered for the MRFA whereas the Su-35 & MiG-31 have , although the IAF has made it clear they were interested in >4.5 Gen FAs ?!
I think Russia has only offered Mig-35 not other heavy-weight fighters like Su-35 or Mig-31 since they don't fit in the Medium role category.

You may think that they want to derail the AMCA. But consider this: We wont get any 5th generation fighter until 3035 when we get the AMCA flying. From now to 2035 China would have a huge lead in 5th generation fighters. Getting Su-57s may bridge the gap if certain conditions are met.
Considering GoI/MoD timelines just taking out requirements & placing orders will take 1-2 years in optimistic timelines. After that, getting the first jet, won't be before 3-4 years minimum.

This pushes the timeline to 2029-30 ish. But that is considering Su-57 is actually capable enough, and a true 5th gen fighter, not a 4.5++ gen.

Regarding the Chinese threat, I will say we should focus on 4.5 gen. jets like Rafale, Tejas Mk2 rather than blind-buying a 5th generation or a supposedly 5th generation jet like Su-57.
