Private sector seeks the easy way out, no wonder they want DRDO and PSUs out of the picture
Indian private sector's investment in Research is minimal compared to their revenue. What can we expect. Bunch of idiots. DRDO, ISRO, DAE doing great job compared to them in terms of actual R&D.

India had its first indigenous car Tata Indica in 1999 while thermonuclear bomb in 1998. kudos.

People who are bad mouth private companies should understand that all these companies are listed on share market and not in it for charity but to do Business. They are liable for the money they spend, if there are no contracts by the goverment, why will any company invest in R&D. Take the example of Kalyani or WHAP, how many orders went out? nothing. It gets dragged till eternity and the investment is dead on arrival.

Even in US the companies get paid to build prototypes and also get grants every year to spend on R & D with fixed orders in future. If any goverment gives money it will be political suicide in India. I see no problem with screwdrivergiri by private companies, no need to reinvent the wheel at least in the area of vehicals and basic rifles. Let alone originally built product, even scredrivergiried products wont get orders then what is the point of spending money.

Forget defence, in their own sectors like consumer electronics or engineering, no compaies spend on R&D. It is not in their DNA. Look at biggies like Reliance, Tata etc. Do not blame govt for everything. There are red tapes and they should be removed, true. The main problem with so called ToT is what happened with submarine contracts HDW, Scorpene and now P75I. The list goes on. Now we are even importing AK rilfes under screwdrivergiri.

For DRDO also, one of the reason for success of strategic missiles is they can not be imported. Now Agni Prime is one of the best in the world.

Really? No R & D?

Where did all these patents came from then?

Below are the list of R&D centres for L&T alone.

Go thru this article then you will know the efforts put in by L&T from 92. They invested heavily in expanding the shipbuilding capacity. But what orders did they get?

Passing blanket statements is easy when nothing on stake. Agree the spends on R&D is less comparatively, but no company will risk the future. Money flows where there is more money to be earned.

They spent capital on defence production and yet sarkari firms get orders on "nomination". In this environment the fact that they have still gone ahead is commendable.

What is Tata Motors, L&T's revenue to R&D % compared to BMW, Lockheed. Tata Motors spend even less % than JLR! How much Reliance, Mahindea etc spend? Much less. Most of the Indian comlanies just started inceeasing R&D spending recently.

One of the reason why DRDO, ISRO etc falls shorts of expectation is lacl of support from industry. Why NASA, DARPA gets everything done by Lockheed , Boeing, Raytheon and many other MSMEs.

Why are you comparing companies like TATA & M&M with Boeing and Lockhead. They are not currently and never were on the same level.
