S-400 40N6 and 48N6 are primarily meant for interception of aircrafts . So the 400 km ranged missile has only a 60 km range against ballistic missiles. S-400 has a secondary role against BM .

But AD-1 and AD-2 are purpose built missiles developed from the outset for interception of KV and missiles with speeds upto 7.7 km/sec both within and outside the atmospheres.

This is THE MRBM IRBM ICBM killer.
If so, then this would be comparable to s-500/a-135/235 and sm series.....so why did we buy s-400? Do you think this will be mobile like s-500 or more of aegis gbmd? 7.7 km/s is hypersonic range, can we really believe all these claims? s-400 may be different class as you stated but if we are able to penetrate to this level then I expect we would have already created something that is mature and not buy s-400.....no other country gives congratulations on tests other than India in general from highest leadership, is there a hidden message that its close to deployment vs political mileage?

From official PIB press release.

Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful maiden flight-test of Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) interceptor AD-1 missile with large kill altitude bracket from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on November 02, 2022. The flight-test was carried out with participation of all BMD weapon system elements located at different geographical locations.

The AD-1 is a long-range interceptor missile designed for both low exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception of long-range ballistic missiles as well as aircraft. It is propelled by a two-stage solid motor and equipped with indigenously-developed advanced control system, navigation and guidance algorithm to precisely guide the vehicle to the target.

During the flight-test, all the sub-systems performed as per expectations and were validated by the data captured by a number of range sensors including Radar, Telemetry and Electro Optical Tracking stations deployed to capture the flight data.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and other teams associated with successful flight trial of AD-1. He termed it as a unique type of interceptor with advanced technologies available with a very few nations in the world. He exuded confidence that it will further strengthen the country’s BMD capability to the next level.
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat congratulated his team on the successful trial, stating that this interceptor will provide great operational flexibility to the users and having capability to engage many different types of targets.

Well,
Imp points.

1. This is a multi purpose missile in the sense that it can also intercept aircrafts at long ranges besides ballistic missiles at low exo atmospheric and endo atmospheric ranges.

2. The press release explicitly mentions that AD-1 will further strengthen India's BMD capability to the next level. So this is a missile which will be deployed in numbers. It's not some sort of exotic technology demonstrator which will be later adapted for small scale operational usage.

3. The release also mentions that AD-1 has the ability to engage many different types of targets. Well, AD-1 will be able to effectively engage hypersonic air breathing cruise missiles and maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicles.

AD-1 is comparable to the interceptors of S-500. At par if not better. Unless the various missiles of the S-500 are revealed nothing concrete regarding who has the upper hand can be said.

S-500 is said to be S-400 on steroids.

A-135 or Gazelle is a huge missile. AD-2 is much smaller. And yes AD-2's role is similar . Gazelle doesn't have a KV. It used to have a tactical nuke warhead which would have detonated in close vicinity of the RVs and either destroy them or throw them off course .

A-235 aka Nudol is for interception of satellites . It's similar to our ASAT interceptor which is PDV Mk II.

For such long ranges, what radars are in scope, any details on that? If what you said is true, then AD systems should soon get on no import lists....I am not sure if we conducted enough tests, just look at how many tests Aegis and S-series undergo? Lot can be done with simulation though.....my guess is they are going at this from critical sub systems like navigation integration, seekers and so on.....we are likely away from any active deployment anytime soon....I will be glad to be wrong.
