ZM-1 manned surveillance platform, manned version of Rustom-1 UAV.
The ZM-1 system has been conceived in response to a cost effective manned surveillance platform.
The RUSTOM1 DRDO UAV is based on the ZM-1 design.
ZEPHYR manufactures the RUSTOM1 UAV airframe & integrates the Lycoming Engine for the DRDO RUSTOM1.
The "Z" represents Zephyr and "M" designates manned multi-role system. The "1" refers to the series of purpose-built piloted aircraft systems.
The ZM-1 is a medium altitude, long endurance manned aircraft system. The ZM-1's primary mission is to act as an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) asset, employing sensors to provide real-time data to commanders and intelligence specialists at all levels.
The ZM-1 is not intended to be alternate to the UAVs but instead to compliment it and also to meet the requirement of the user who are looking for a platform for niche ISR missions. Where they do not want to devote their unmanned assets or are unable to at short notice. The ZM-1 is intended to meet this requirement. As they can be positioned through the civil airspace system with ease & operate from any regular airfields.
The typical system consists of the air vehicles, communication equipment/links, and active-duty personnel. The crew for the ZM-1 is a Pilot / Payload analyzer. To meet combatant commanders' requirements, the ZM-1 delivers tailored capabilities using mission kits that may contain various sensor payload combinations.
The ZM-1 baseline system comprise of a robust sensor suite. Imagery provided by an infrared sensor, colour/monochrome daylight TV and an image-intensified TV. The video from each of the imaging sensors can be viewed as separate video streams or fused with the infrared sensor video. The laser rangefinder/designator provides the capability to precisely designate targets for laser-guided munitions & enable Joint Direct Attack .
Each ZM-1 aircraft can be flown to any airfield in the country or be disassembled into main components and loaded into a container for air deployment nationwide.
ZM-1 has been designed for low- and medium-altitude, long-endurance ISR. Provisions have been made for carriage and release of external stores. All components incorporate either commercial or MILSPEC standards to provide maximum component interoperability and to minimize integration schedule and cost. The aircraft will be configured with high-performance EO/IR FMV payload, Communications Systems ICDL DataLink by DRDO. All RUSTOM1 UAV assets can be configured with the ZM-1.

F.Y.I Rustom 1 is based on light aircraft manned version of similar design built by HAL in 90's. i remember posting the video couple of years back on the forum, unable to find it now.
