India, Russia Likely To Export BrahMos

By admin at 12 August, 2010, 9:47 am

BY: AVIATION WEEK

An intergovernmental agreement (IGA) signed by New Delhi and Moscow stipulates that the missile will be inducted into the armed forces of India and Russia and also will be exported to certain shared allies.

Though the export of the missile has been discussed for many years, nothing concrete has happened. It is still too early to know which nations would be identified first, according to one Indian official. "It will be a decision taken after a lot of deliberations," the official said.

"The missile will be exported to friendly countries after taking into account the security needs of both [Indian and Russia]," Indian defense minister A.K. Antony said. "Many countries have shown interest to buy these missiles, but no decision has been taken as to whom the missile can be sold."

Presently, the Brahmos missiles are being produced for the Indian army, navy and air force. Export will start only after meeting the minimum requirements of India. In addition to the IGA, the missile has the approval of the Indo-Russian Intergovernmental Commission for Military Technical Cooperation for Export.

AVIATION WEEK reported in May this year, following a facility visit to the BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram (BATL), that an air version of the missile is currently under development and will be fitted on to the Su-30MKI fighter (Aerospace DAILY, May 27). "The prototype of the missile launcher is ready from our side and we are awaiting a critical system from HAL Nasik to be fitted on to it," an official said Aug. 11. "The trials would then begin on the Su-30MKI platform."

A hypersonic version of the missile is also in the works and the design aspects are likely to be finalized very soon. The new missile will be ready for testing by 2015, Indian sources said. The export of BrahMos will be a huge boost to India's military might.

"After Dhruv choppers, it will be a great achievement if we can identify a couple of nations to export these missiles [to]," one source said. "It would also put India into a league of countries that exports military wares."

BrahMos missile maker happy with Russian Glonass receivers | Defense | RIA Novosti

BrahMos Aerospace Ltd., a Russian-Indian joint venture manufacturing supersonic cruise missiles, is successfully using Russian-built Glonass receivers for aiming and target acquisition, CEO Sivathanu Pillai said on Wednesday.
BrahMos missiles equipped with Glonass receivers acquire and effectively engage targets, Pillai told the Bengaluru Space Expo 2010 exhibition.

He said the receivers performed reliably and consistently.

A bit off-topic, but till when can all our tri-services be linked and networked as one single fighting force including FINSAS of Army and the entire IAF fighter fleet alongside Navy's warships and fighters? I heard that 19 out of 24 satellites are already up and need the remaining for complete networked fighting unit.

India is first country to get access to military grade signal from Glonass and deal is already signed on Putins Visit. hopefully it will be fully functional by this year end.

The Hindu : News / National : BrahMos induction into IAF by 2013

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed by India and Russia and which can travel at speeds of 2.5 to 2.8 mach, is likely to be inducted in the Indian Air Force (IAF) by 2013, a top official said on Wednesday.

The IAF version of the precision-attack low-flying missile would be completing its air-to-ground tests by 2012.

"We expect it to be inducted in IAF by 2013," CEO and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace (BAL) A. Sivathanu Pillai told reporters on the margins of the second international space exhibition and conference here.

BrahMos, which has already been inducted in the Indian Army and the Indian Navy, can carry a payload of 200 to 300 kg of explosives.

The Sukhoi SU-30MKI combat jet has been chosen as the aircraft to be fitted with the BrahMos. The aircraft is being modified for the purpose.

"The aircraft has to undergo certain modifications," Mr. Pillai said.

The Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) is building the modified version of the Russian-made aircraft for reducing its weight and giving it additional propulsion.

A prototype of the aircraft is also being built and tested in Russia.

The BrahMos is capable of attacking from land-to-ship, ship-to-land and ship-to ship, Mr. Pillai said.

The IAF version will have the capacity of attacking large targets from air to ground.

The missile, being developed by BAL, a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia, costs around Rs. 1,500 crore.

The BrahMos will also be tested for its underwater performance, Mr. Pillai said.
"We are even looking into the aspect of fitting it on the submarines to attack ships and underwater elements (submarines). The technology is ready but the platform for testing has to be built," he said.

The BrahMos missile has evoked interest in several countries. Many want to buy it but they may have to wait till India completes its induction into its defence forces.

"The export market will have to wait till India inducts the missile in the armed forces. Next is the turn of the Russian military," Mr. Pillai added.

The India-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Military Technical Cooperation has approved the idea of catering to the export market.

The JV has also plans to build a hyper-sonic cruise missile that travels five times faster than a sound wave, Mr. Pillai said, adding the technology is yet to be developed.

^^ So basically, by the year end, they'd be putting up all 24 required satellites? Neither ISRO nor Roscosmos made any statement on this.

Brahmos is indeed moving towards Universal Platform Supersonic Missile. Within next 2 years, Brahmos will be anti-ship, A2G, land-to-land, Sub launched missile giving tons of capability to Indian Armed forces. Leave aside neighbors, I don't think even any other country will be able to counter it any soon. :angry_1:

Export of BrahMos only after meeting our requirements: Govt

Government on Monday said it will export the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos supersonic Cruise missile to friendly countries taking into account the security needs of the two nations.

"The Inter-Governmental Agreement signed by the two governments stipulates that the missile will be inducted in the armed forces of the India and Russia and also will be exported to friendly countries," Defence Minister A K Antony said replying to a question in the Lok Sabha.

He said India in consultation with Russian government will export BrahMos cruise missile to friendly countries taking into account the security needs of the both countries.

Antony said presently, the missiles are being produced for meeting requirements of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force on priority and "export will start only after meeting minimum requirements of the country".

The Minister said the two countries have also signed an agreement on the missile which has been approved by the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Military Technical Cooperation.

Answering another query on missiles, Antony said there was no plan to accept the conditions of Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

well glonass is far more better system then GPS and it needs less satellite to function then GPS, but the problem is its not a mature system and it will take some time to get mature, and the main difference between glonass and gps is, glonass is a far more accurate then the GPS and i heard my prof saying that glonass are placed vertically position or on the longitude so just 2 satellite are enough to figure out the exact position and GPS are placed on the longitude and they follow the longitude path and more then 3 minimum satellite are require to get a some what accurate result and for accurate result 5 satellite are required
