BrahMos aims to create $13 billion order book
BANGALORE: BrahMos, the missile joint venture between India and Russia, is inviting a lot of global attention, particularly from South America, Middle East, Asia Pacific and African regions, a senior defence official told ET. With this newfangled demand BrahMos aims at creating an order book of $13 billion for the indigenously-built Brah-Mos.
Although there are over 60,000 cruise missiles worldwide, most of them are pretty archaic, having been developed in the 1970s. This explains the reason for the spurt in demand for the new BrahMos fleet, say defence officials.The supersonic cruise missile system has also caught the attention of many countries such as Brazil, South Africa and Chile because it has been developed at a low-cost budget of $300 million.
Named after India's Brahmaputra river and Russia's Moskva river, the Brahmos missile can travel at nearly three times the speed of sound and hit targets up to 300 km away. It can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. "It is the best missile — simple but universal.
We are working along with the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs and PSUs such as DRDL and BEML. Private players such as Larsen & Toubro, Godrej are also collaborating for the project", Alexander B Maksichev, deputy general director at NPO Mashinostroyenia and managing director at Brah-Mos Aerospace, told ET. "BrahMos is moving in a new direction with airborne missile version," he added.
"The negotiations and ground work to export these missiles to other countries have started. The export of BrahMos will start once the requirements of Indian defence are met", said a senior defence official speaking on condition of anonymity. On its part, India has already placed $3 billion of missile orders including ground systems and receivers with BrahMos for next 7-8 years.
The missiles will also be exported to the Russian military, which has shown interest in the new air-borne version, the defence official said. "The air-launched version includes a missile which can be dropped from an altitude of 3,000-km. It can then find the target on its own with the help of a computer", the defence official said.
The success of the BrahMos model comes at a time when India is considering deploying its nuclear-capable ballistic missiles in the North East, close to its border with China in an apparent attempt to enhance its military preparedness. The move comes close after the release of a report by Pentagon, which suggested that China has moved its new advanced long-range CSS-5 missiles close to its border with India and developed contingency plans to shift airborne forces to the region.
BrahMos is capable of carrying conventional as well as nuclear warheads, with a payload of 200-300 kg. The test of the air-launched version of Brah-Mos supersonic cruise missile is expected to take place in 2012, said Dr Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai chief executive, BrahMos Aerospace, during the Bangalore Space Expo 2010. He said the Indian Air Force has chosen the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft as a launch platform for the BrahMos missile. The IAF has also placed orders for land-to-land attack missiles.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army, which has given orders for long target missiles, is also procuring block-two BrahMos missiles for precise and controlled attacks on small targets. This will prevent the surrounding infrastructure from being destroyed. "BrahMos is a landmark project because it was started from scratch in India. We have been developing ballistic missiles. But it is a good learning process for Indian scientists to design and develop the cruise missile technology", said Ajey Lele from the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), a Delhi-based think-tank.
Going forward , a hypersonic version of the missile — BrahMos-II is presently under development. The missile can touch speeds ranging from five to seven times that of sound, making it the fastest cruise missile in the world. Brahmos-II is expected to be ready by 2013-14 and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy.

100% it wont be, cause Russians still supply us the crucial and one of the most complex part of Brahmos - Multi Spetral Seeker - beside the engines.
MTCR angle:
MTCR is a export group regime of 34 members (India is not a MTCR member) whose goal is non prolifertion. Now Russia as a member state, which has fairly good record of international non proliferation conduct, would not try to violate or circumvent the Brahmos factor and invite sanctions from member states against the companies involved within. However if they did that in case of India (Brahmos) - India as a recipient country has nothing to worry about because its not a member state, hence can not be termed as a violator nation. The onus remains on exporting member nation.
India can produce any damn system on thier own, but in the case of partnership with Russians, Brahmos range may not be increased............

This is the one sticking point of Brahmos, but we have other missiles (shauriya, nirbhay) for the range issue. Our indigenous Scramjet program will also resolve any future range issues. A lot of this imo is Russian fear that Brahmos may cut into their cruise missile export market??

Sure we do.
As for export market of Russia, they have many deadly cruise missiles inventory, and they are all manufactured in thier own country with no western parts into it. As of now they dont have any competition from India, which itself (India) is dependent on parts and technology, so to speak. But India is catching up fast, albeit the pace is tardy because western high tech is still not coming home - dual tech dillema!

Preparation for the test firing of super—sonic cruise missile BrahMos, likely to be held on Sunday, reached its final stage today at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here.
The sophisticated missile, being developed under Indo—Russian joint venture, has already been inducted into the Indian army as well as navy and the proposed test is a routine one by the users, defence officials said.
One regiment of the 290—km range BrahMos—I variant, consisting of 67 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers on 12x12 'Tatra' vehicles and two mobile command posts, among other equipment, is already operational in the Army, they said.
The Army is set to induct two more regiments of the BrahMos Block—II land—attack cruise missiles (LACM), which have been designed as "precision strike weapons" capable of hitting small targets in cluttered urban environment.
BrahMos—II can potentially be used for "surgical strikes" at terror training camps across the border without causing collateral damage.
The BrahMos Block—II variant has been developed to take out a specific small target, with a low radar cross—section, in a multi—target environment.
The BrahMos missile is a two—stage vehicle that has a solid propellant booster and a liquid propellant ram—jet system. The missile can fly at 2.8 times the speed of sound.
It can carry conventional warheads up to 300 kg for a range of 290 km.

BRAHMOS Block-II test-fired with advanced supersonic dive manoeuvrability
BALASORE, ORISSA (BNS): Today at 1135 hours the advanced version of BRAHMOS Block–II was tested successfully from the interim test range (ITR) at Chandipur.
The missile flew in the designated complex trajectory conducting large manoeuvres and steep dive. This is the first time in the world that a supersonic dive has been realised by a cruise missile.
Eye-witnesses from the Indian armed forces termed it as a perfectly precise flight.
The Defence Minister Shri AK Antony congratulated the armed forces and the defence scientists associated with the project with this success.
The launch was conducted in the presence of Director General of Artillery, Lieutenant General Vinod Nayanar; Dr. AS Pillai, CEO & MD, BrahMos Aerospace; scientists from DRDO and Industry representatives along with officers from different units of the army.

Here comes the bunker buster

India will soon become the first country to have cruise missiles with hyper speed of over 6,000 km per hour, as an agreement for their joint development will be signed with Russia during the visit of president Dmitry Medvedev in December.
The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear plant, built by Russia in Tamil Nadu, will also be commissioned during the visit slated to begin from December 21.

BrahMos cruise missile was successfully test-fired on Sunday and the highlight of the mission was the missile performing a steep dive at a supersonic speed.
After its launch from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, off Orissa, and reaching a flat trajectory, the missile dived vertically. The missile performed the manoeuvre when it was flying at three times the speed of sound. Normally, a missile comes down gradually. This is a new capability proved by BrahMos, a product of India-Russia collaboration.
This was BrahMos' 23rd flight.
"It was an important mission. For the first time, a cruise missile was tested at a supersonic speed in a steep-dive mode," said Chief Executive Officer of BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited A. Sivathanu Pillai.
"When you launch a missile, it goes up and reaches a flat trajectory. In this case, the BrahMos dove straight down from its flat trajectory while cruising at a supersonic speed," he said.
