The French Battle Buggy

Panhard Innovate with the CRAB

Following a long tradition of supplying light armored vehicles for recce and patrol, Panhard is unveiling at Eurosatory 2012 the latest concept for such vehicle – the Combat Recce Armored Buggy (CRAB).

"The CRAB, a revolutionary concept without any equivalent in the market, will introduce a new kind of mobile warfare" Panhard promises. Major General Vincent Desportes, a special advisor to the chairman of Panhard explains: "The CRAB was designed with the view of providing the French Army with a force –sparing tool, enabling it to carry out a large number of missions with very low life cycle cost, before committing major combat assets, such as main Battle Tanks or other heavy armored fighting formations. Therefore, CRAB provides the mobility and firepower necessary for all phases of such missions. As a multipurpose platform, CRAB feature protection and mobility, equipped with the mission kit that can take part in the early stage of a conflict – containment, stabilization and normalization, while other configurations of the same vehicle will be employed in offensive, defensive or security missions.

Panhard has based its CRAB design on the French Army WBAE 'commitment support' for tank squadrons, the WABE is currently at stage 2 of the Scorpion operation. Its purpose goes beyond recce missions, which are currently fulfilled by the scout squadrons operating VBLs. The commitment support role may be moe important and include employing future Non Line of Sight (NLOS) weapons that the EBRC will not have. The CRAB has been designed with this platform modularity concept" The company expects the world market for vehicles of this size and capabilities could be in the thousands.

CRAB includes several innovations such as the crew citadel and remote-controlled weapon system that enables designers to come up with a light (8-10 tons), compact yet highly protected platform. The vehicle is designed to accommodate up to three crew members, a driver, gunner and commander. The low profile (1.80 meters) contributes much to the vehicle's low visibility and stealthiness.

The drive line is designed to deliver high speed (up to 110 km/h) even off-road and in all-terrain conditions, maintaining agility in complex and built-up terrain. Moreover, the vehicle will have the capability to reverse at high speed, move crabwise and turn the rear wheels in the opposite direction, thus making a U turn within a 10 meter diameter. The large-diameter tires and large travel active suspension would be key to withstanding off-road mobility at high speed.

The protection level will consist of ballistic protection suite of STANAG 4569 Level 2, upgradable to level 4, and mine protection meeting STANAG 4569 Level 2/3. Thales is working with Panhard to develop the CRAB's electronic architecture comprising the Systronique vetronic network, on the basis of standardized crew stations, compatible with future Scorpion labels and standards.

The remotely operated turret can mount various types of weapons, from 7.62mm machine guns to 30 mm automatic cannons, and surface or air defense missiles . At Eurosatory 2012 the CRAB is displayed with a turret mounting the 25mm cannon, designed by CMI. the compact and lightweight CRAB will be deployable by air, three such vehicles will be transportable in a Grizzly A-400M.

Bradley Urban Survivability Kits Installed Early, Under Budget

Bradley A3 Fighting Vehicles assigned to units stationed in the Republic of Korea became the latest in the fleet to receive the Bradley Urban Survivability Kit III upgrades, last week.

The Bradley Urban Survivability Kit III, or BUSK III, Modification Work Order, knows as an MWO, application mission began in Korea for the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, and Army Materiel Command pre-positioned stocks in January of this year and concluded on June 4th, a month ahead of schedule.

"The team involved did an amazing job when you consider the statistics," said Lt. Col. Glenn Dean, who serves as product manager for Bradley. "Our BUSK III installation team applied approximately 2,400 total MWOs and repairs on 236 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, finishing a month earlier than projected and 20 percent under budget. That constitutes roughly $700,000 in savings."

The BUSKs are designed to allow the Army's infantry fighting vehicle to better adapt to the rigors of urban combat. BUSK III incorporates four modifications including a blast-proof fuel cell, a blast-resistant driver seat, a turret survivability system, and an emergency ramp release.

The team was able to save time and money by bundling other pending MWOs while installing BUSK III on the vehicles. Modifications applied in addition to the four BUSK III MWOs were electrical ground improvements, a fire suppression guard improvement, an automatic fire suppression system control panel switch guard, and a hotbox protection system enhancement. The installation team also conducted check and repair activities which addressed the control panel retrofit, track adjuster, driver's hatch bearings and generator re-torque.

"Events like this demonstrate the best of both worlds. Operationally, our teams installed critical force protection enhancements to the Bradley A3 which will allow our forces to maintain battlefield dominance well into the future. Simultaneously, we did it ahead of schedule and well below cost. The BUSK III team did a marvelous job," said Col. William Sheehy, project manager for the Army's Heavy Brigade Combat Team.

After finishing work in Korea the BUSK III installation team will now move to Fort Carson, Colo., to begin servicing the 4th Infantry Divisions Bradley's.

BUSK installation is managed by the Army's Product Manager for Bradley and Armored Knight which falls under leadership of the PM Heavy Brigade Combat Team within the Program Executive Office for Ground Combat Systems.

I have noticed your posts, but never had the opportunity to say 'Hi.' So, welcome to the forum, and thanks for your great posts.

Now, after UralAZ and KamAZ, we have another former Soviet company entering India, i.e. KrAZ, one of my all time favourites.

So, welcome to India, KrAZ.

Below, you can see an Indian Air Force KrAZ, in a picture I had posted long time back:

The DOZOR-B armoured personnel carrier is a 4x4 armoured fighting vehicle intended to transport personnel and various loads. The vehicle can be fitted with various light weapons, communications devices, and special equipment.

The DOZOR-B armoured personnel carrier can be efficiently used by special units of the armed forces (quick reaction forces and military police) to carry out reconnaissance, patrolling, and peace-keeping operations, as well as being used as the main transportation vehicle under combat conditions (including NBC envi-ronment).

The DOZOR-B armoured personnel carrier can fulfil its functions by day and night both on hard surface roads and in cross-country.

P.S. I beg pardon at moderators, for that publish material often, but when for us championship of Europe began on football - appeared, that foreigners almost nothing is known about my country. We for all as territory Х

Reminds me of the Vodnik.

For many Indians, countries that were part of the Tsarist Russian Empire, and later, the USSR, are generalized under Russia. In informal talk, whether you are from Ukraine, or Tajikistan, Estonia or Azerbaijan, you would be called Russian.

However, some people know a thing or two about your country. I knew about the Ukrainian SSR having its own representation in the UNO, just like the Belarussian SSR. I am also aware of the Kievskaya Rus, arguably the origin of the Russian Empire, but ironically, not part of the Russian Federation today. ;)

You can open a thread and tell us about things about Ukraine that you would want to share with the world.

We have this in India too:

The KrAZ-6322 "Soldier". He has more long base and forced engine.
http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/military-multimedia/22782-lorries-trucks-prime-movers-15.html#post524502

P.S. Many Indian politicians took in bad that Ukraine sold the tanks of Т-80UD to Pakistan. But you said that we are perceived as single unit with Russia, and nobody wanted to buy military products for us. And Pakistan, by limited approvals, could purchase only for us. And they appeared better what Т- 90!

Yes, you are correct. The best way to piss India off is to be friendly with Pakistan. You do business with Pakistan, you will lose India as a customer.

In recent years, India has been rather cosy with the US, but that did not stop India from rejecting US fighters in favour of the French ones. India even rejected the British fighters, despite UK being a larger aid donor than France. (of course, we don't want their aid :D)

All the peoples of the former Russian Empire are informally referred to as 'Russians' by most commoners, but when government officials decide to procure weapons, they are very careful about whom they will import from.

For example, we had the option to import Ilyushin-76 from Beriev of Russia, because that plane (Ilyushin-76MD) is now made by Beriev (Beriev A-60). They could have easily made what we needed. Yet, we preferred to import the Ilyushin-76 Phalcon from Uzbekistan. This is because, when it comes to defense, historical and emotional bonds have to be kept apart, and practical considerations given priority. Uzbekistan, BTW, is very close to India.

Finally, India and USSR were allies, but India and Russia are friends today, not allies. ;)
