I have been looking for reports on DRDO aiming to bring down Arjun Mark II weight by a few tons and probably switching to a 3-man crew.

Is it happening, and more so is it feasible?

Its the Army issued GSQR and knows that the requirement they issued will increase weight, Army want Arjun MK2 to be heavy & DRDO has no will or power to oppose it as long as the Ground pressure is suitable for operation for thar and punjab so does other places ..

Arjun MK2 already got orders and its trails are done by user, No Major modification can be done at this point , Any more new requirement will be implemented in Arjun MK3 / FMBT ..

Thanks a bunch KB, you are the best.

I hope IA are made to order more Arjun MK2s and in the future we actually get to see IA and DRDO collaborate on a project with full sincerity.

The production of MBT Arjun was derailed due to frequent changes in design, contrary to the assurance in 2004 that the design had been frozen. Introduction of new requirements not envisaged in the original GSQR by the Army led to dismantling of already manufactured MBTs. Delays in the Ordnance Factories in erection of infrastructure facilities and problems in sourcing quality assemblies, added to the delayed production of MBT Arjun.

The Transfer of Technology for indigenous production of T-90 tank was affected by delays in translation of design documents and the Russian firm's inability to share designs on critical assemblies like the gun assembly. The problem was compounded by delays in decisions on alternative solutions on these designs.
Inordinate delays in production of both the tanks, MBT Arjun and T-90, led to fresh import (November 2007) of T-90 tanks valuing Rs. 4913 crore. While the progress of the project for augmentation of production capacity of T-90 tanks sanctioned in September 2011 was very slow, the existing facilities for MBT Arjun remained underutilised in absence of additional orders for MBT Arjun from the Army.
Thus the plan of the Ministry to achieve self reliance remained unfulfilled.

While IAF is looking for all over the world to replace mig-21s with gripen, rafale and what elese not, our army is very tight lipped about replacing much older T-72s with Arjun MBT!!

Is this the reason behind manohar parrikar comparing services GSQR to " futuristic marvel comics stuff", while ignoring the tried and tested product at hand.

Kunal I was not able to find any detailed news in relation to your statement " its trails are done by user".
Has IA freezed the requirements?
What is the status of Israel missile?
Is IA sticking to its intial order of 118 or the order has been increased?

Amry wants Arjun Mk2 to be heavy till ground pressure if operationable...???? I doubt that they might use it to there own advantage later saying its too heavy ...
We said 99 was ok but not 99.00000000000000000000000000000000000001....

FMBT is Arjun MK3 ..

==========>>

Business Standard, 27th Nov 12

Senior army sources tell Business Standard that the Directorate General of Mechanised Forces (DGMF), which oversees the army's tank force, has formally proposed that the Arjun be gradually improved through successive models --- Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV and so on --- rather than attempting a major technological leap into the unknown, which is what the FMBT would be.
Source : Broadsword: Army proposes to scrap Future Main Battle Tank: instead build successive models of the Arjun

Is there a chance of Arjun MK3 when FMBT is being tought about .

Army's fleet of Arjun tanks face technical issues; major proportion of 124 tanks in service not operational

NEW DELHI: The Army is facing major technical issues with its 'indigenous' Arjun tanks, as a significant proportion of its fleet has become inoperable in recent months and are non-serviceable due to continued maintenance problems.

The Army, which reluctantly inducted 124 tanks from 2009, after the UPA government insisted that a token number have to be ordered to keep the tank development programme viable, has of late been having quality problems with the fleet.

The defence minister has been apprised of the issue. Sources said that the Army's opinion is that while a large number of tanks are not operational due to technical defects, the fleet as such is not combat worthy due to reliability issues. "A number of tanks are not operational currently as transfer of technology (ToT) of several imported systems fitted onboard has not been done," an Army official said.

The Army is surprised that quality issues have started arising even though the entire fleet came into service as recently as 2013 when deliveries ended. Given that the tanks are highly dependent on foreign equipment — 60% of the tank is imported — the failure to get maintenance technology means that the systems have to be sent abroad for even minor repairs.

It is believed that a meeting on the low serviceability rate of the Arjun fleet was conducted at South Block recently and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is aware of the problems. The Army has identified 96 problems, including 18 major ones. The minister has been keen to increase the efficiency of existing platforms available with the military given that there is a paucity of funds to procure new systems.
In IAF, he has personally intervened to ensure that the availability rate of the Su 30 fleet improves by at least 10%. A similar approach is being taken for the Army too. DRDO is, meanwhile, working on the development of a successor in the form of the Arjun Mk II.

The only part which make scene is the serviceability, It is not uncommon either, Rest of tanks in IA suffer similar problems as other tanks are canabalised to make operational for other tanks ..

The number of Arjun is too low.
WHich makes it very difficult to maintain a optimum inventory.

When the number is too low it makes difficult to even service them as the service tech is also not cheap.

For other tanks they have number number to be cannibalised but thats not the case with arjun.

What % of Arjun MK2 is Indian?

I believe there are import problems since quite a few assemblies and sub assemblies are imported.

India Grounds Most of Original Arjun Tanks

Most of India's homemade Arjun Mark-1 battle tank fleet has been grounded because of technical snags and lack of imported components, an Indian Army official said.

"Nearly 75 percent of the 124 tanks with the Army are grounded," the official added.

The Army has inducted 124 Arjun Mark-1 tanks developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by state-owned Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi in southern India. Nearly 55 percent of the value of the tank is imported components and those supplies have dried up, the official said.

The Army official did not give details of the technical snags but said there are more than 90 issues.

"The problems in the Arjun tank are mainly confined to its transmission system, targeting and thermal sights," the official added.

"There are a number of issues related to functionality due to imported components, which seem to be bugging the Arjun Mark-1 fleet for some time now. The technical snags have reportedly led to much of the fleet remaining non operational, creating a void in the tank strength of the Indian Army," said Rahul Bhonsle, a retired Indian Army brigadier general and defense analyst.

The Indian Army was forced to buy the 124 Arjuns by DRDO so that the Avadi factory would remain functional, the official said. He added that the Arjun Mark-1 has still not been cleared by the Army for combat because at 62 tons it is too heavy.

Meantime, DRDO has developed the Mark-2 version, which has received satisfactory marks from the Indian Army in comparison trials with the Russian T-90 main battle tank. The Mark-2 weighs less than 50 tons and has 93 improvements over the Mark-1, and includes nearly 60 percent indigenous components, claimed a DRDO official.

The Army has cleared 118 Mark-2 tanks.

"If the experience gained from Mark-1 is utilized fully there should be lesser technical problems with Mark-2 at present though reports of trials do not suggest the same," Bhonsle said.

The indigenous Arjun tank project began in 1974, and was originally aimed to replace Russian T-54 tanks, which have been retired, and more than 1,600 Russian T-72 tanks still in operation.

It is not due to imported content Sir, but low number of orders at industrial scale ..

Such low number discourage R&D as well as those Pvt players involve, I hope for the best ..
