Arjun MK-II is all set and gearing up for its final Summer Trials which are to be held by end of next month or in early July before it hits productions.-Indian army has asked for 93 improvements to the Arjun Mark II tank including 19 major modifications.

All the modifications suggested by the army had been successfully incorporated in the tank and will be ready for final trials by Indian army after which DRDO will seek clearance for production to start.-Heavy Vehicles Factory-(HVF) Avadi will need-30 months-(Two and a half years) to deliver-first batch-of-Arjun MK-2-to Indian army, DRDO is also hoping for fresh orders of Arjun MK-II from its current 126 placed by Indian army some time back.

MK-2-will see-increase-in-weight-from-62 tonne-to-67 tonne.-The-suspension-has been-re-designed-to handle-up to 70 tonne weight.-Wheels are bigger in dimensions-and have improved track length, MK-2 will be powered by the same MTU engine imported from Germany but it has been improved to carry extra weight of the tank but the-top speed-of the-tank-will be limited to-58kmph-coming down from 72kmph seen on MK-1 Arjun.-DRDO is working on indigenous powerhouse for future tanks but Integrations with Arjun can only happen if Army places order for 3 more Regiments of Arjun MKII (350). Otherwise it will only serve in next generation battle tank which Drdo is developing under Futuristic Main Battle Tank (FMBT) Program for Indian Army post 2020.

MK-2-will have improvements like-missile firing capability, improved commander's panoramic sight with night vision,-Hunter killer capability, improved Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) , improved communication equipment along with better navigation aid ,-full frontal Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), Mine plough , improved gun barrel , additional ammunition types.

In Previous trials MK2 did not face any issues and Army was satisfied with its performance, DRDO has now completed all the improvements asked by Indian army on MK-2 variant and hopes Army will be satisfied after final rounds of trials and clears production of it along with fresh orders.

Arjun Mk-1A – India’s indigenous main battle tank ready to join the Indian army

The most lethal, sophisticated and all-weather battle tank that India has indigenously designed a 68-tonne rugged bull the Arjun Mk-1A is ready to join the Indian army.
It will be shown in the 11th biennial edition of DefExpo India 2020 that will be conducted in February 2020 in Lucknow the Uttar Pradesh capital.

After the successful completion of the final integration tests of Arjun Mk-1A that had been conducted in the desert of the Rajasthan this year by the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army who is currently operating the 2 regiments of Arjun Mk-1 the earlier version of the tank.

The new version of the Arjun tank has passed the rigorous army evaluation test.

The main working force for the improvised version of Arjun is the Scientists of Chennai-based Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

After getting the orders the commencement of the manufacturing the tank would begin in the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) of Avadi.

As per the top officials of the DRDO, the Arjun MBT Mk-1A has undergone 72 improvements out which the India Army had specifically requested 14 major upgrades have also been done.
The Arjun MBT Mk-1A has been improved on all fundamental parameters of a battle tank that are firepower, protection and mobility...Read more http://www.defencezealer.com/arjun-mk-1a-ready-to-join-the-indian-army/

Like Avinash Chandler had said in an interview, DRDO had proposed a two crew tank to IA with fighter plane cockpit like facilities with a lots of automation. This will help to reduce manual work and reduce crew size to two. It is the time to work on such new concept with advance low weight metallurgy, bigger bore size smooth bore gun, protection system like trophy in its advance form, reinforced bottom for better protection from mines etc

Integral Axle Arm Model for Arjun MBT.png

CAD of Integral Axle Arm for Arjun MBT.

In Arjun MBT MK-I the running gear consists of suspension system in this system one of the critical patrt AXLE ARM which was made by two piece configuration i.e one part is crank pin and another part is arm with stub axle .that two piece is made into single piece by joining with following methods.

 Liquid nitrogen Shrink fit
 Welding
 dowel pin

Problems faced (disadvantages):-

Shrink fitting

With liquid nitrogen shrink fitting the necessary clearance is obtained by shrinking the inner component (instead of expanding the outer one ).this is achieved by immersing the inner component warms up ,expanding to form a tight distortion free interference fit. Due to this a lot time is needed and failure may be occur.

Welding

Welding failures occur because of overstress, corrosive environments, misuse, abuse, and from defective welds and/or welding.

dowel pin

In dowel pin the failure may be occur due to the load acts on the axle arm the pin get broken and failure of design takes place.

In order to avoid the above problem after the various study we suggested to make two piece component into single piece component by using one of the best manufacturing methods forging and made the integral axle arm. It’s the single configuration method.

Problem solved:-

There is no requirement of of welding .
There is no requirement of shrink fit.
Crank pin is not required.

The strength adequacy of the newly designed component both analytically and by FEA method.

Found that the maximum von misses stress 413.272 MPa receiving at the stub axle/axle arm/crank pin of integral axel arm.

The factor of safety found to be 1.9372

In the FEA though a higher stress value is found in a certain area it may be ignored owing to the sharp corner feature present in those location .however the stresses on the critical locations are within the safe limit.

In this Mk-ll integral axle arm, has been manufactured as a single component, will withstand heavy loads in off-road running condition. We analyzed integral axle arm using ansys, and find out maximum principle stress, factor of safety and frequency cycles are within safe values of the material. Hence the design is safe.

Western nations urged on by arms merchants in London are the chief reason for under ratings Indian built military hardware. It helps them sell more and more. The same they cannot do to Chinese poor quality Military hardware which is never exported. They are afraid of Chinese backlash.
