@ Armand2REP. There were two operation prototypes and one LSP before this crash, so answer is 'no'.

^^ Russians really don't care about life much, do they? Their callous attitude for life with a massively shrinking population is more of a concern for Russian allies than Russians themselves... At this rate, they'd cease to grow in next 30 years.

Pilot killed in MiG-21 crash

An Indian Air Force pilot was killed on Tuesday morning when a MiG-21 fighter crashed soon after taking off from Naal airfield in Rajasthan's Bikaner district. IAF officials said Flying Officer M S Pillai was on a routine sortie. The aircraft crashed following complications while landing, they said.

Rajasthan Defence PRO Col S D Goswami said the incident occurred at the Naal air base, about 15 km from Bikaner, at around 11.30 am. "A court of enquiry has been constituted to look into the incident," he said.

Senior police officials in Bikaner said there were complications while landing and the aircraft was flying low when the pilot tried to eject, but suffered grievous injuries and succumbed to injuries at the base hospital.

This is the second crash of a MiG series fighter aircraft this year.

On February 4, an IAF MiG-21 'Bison' fighter plane had crashed, apparently due to an engine problem while on a routine sortie in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district, but the pilot had ejected safely.

The single-seater plane burst into flames soon after the crash, DIG, Azamgarh range, L. Ravikumar said.

The pilot and a girl working in a field were killed in the accident, he said.

The Jaguar, a deep penetration strike aircraft, had taken off from Gorakhpur airbase in UP, IAF sources said in Delhi.

On February 4, a MiG-21 'Bison' fighter plane had crashed apparently due to an engine problem while on a routine sortie in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district but the pilot had ejected safely.

Can someone give me a quick check on the number of Jaguars and Mig-21's in service, at this moment. Excluding all of those in Darin III SLEP/retrofit and those that've crashed, including this one.

^^ 2 crashes simultaneously in two days !! Man, this is something rarely seen. I think even the upgraded Bisons are not good enough on the maintenance front. Jaguar incident was sad, last crash was in 2007.

RIP to the Pilots !!

Early Data On Yesterday's IAF Jaguar Crash

IAF trainee pilot Flt Lt S Pandey, who tragically perished in a Jaguar ground attack aircraft crash yesterday, was on a low-level navigation syllabus sortie from the Gorakhpur Air Force Station, and was accompanied by a senior pilot in chase in another Jaguar. Flt Lt Pandey had been on a simulated attack run at ultra low level (below 300 feet to avoid radar) from initial point to target, completed in roughly 2.5 minutes. However, the pilot missed his target, the reasons for which will be part of the court of inquiry. His chase instructor radioed in asking him to turn back and redo the attack manoeuver. Now the normal drill during such training is to pull up to at least 500 feet, turn around, descent at your initial point and go back for the sim attack. Tragically, for reasons still unknown, Flt Lt Pandey began turning around at less than 300 feet, bleeding altitude all the while. The investigation will look into several human and technical factors. Of the latter, among the possibilities include the inexplicable breakdown in the entire or parts of the flight control system, including the auto-stabilizer system or pitch trim controller, but overwhelmingly critical at such low altitude where reaction time in a mere wafer.
