There would be 3 prototype and then LSP of 1 sqd.

As far as I know, 60 set of wheels, means 20 jets, has been already been ordered for. Nothing official ofcourse yet.
this video says MRF won tender fro lca mk2 tyre supply.

Also says aldin tech won tender for supplying large display 3 units.

Can someone confirm.

IAF COMMITTED TO INDUCT 6 TEJAS MK-2 FIGHTER SQUADRONS: AIR CHIEF VR CHAUDHARI
New Delhi:
Fully backing the indigenous fighter aircraft programs, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on Monday said the Indian Air Force has already given the commitment to buy six squadrons of the under development TEJAS MK-2 combat aircraft and would place more orders for these planes once their production begins.

“Indian Air Force has already given commitment for the induction of six squadrons of Light Combat Aircraft Mark 2 fighter jets. We will decide on additional numbers once the production of these aircraft starts,” Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari told ANI.

The IAF has already placed orders for four squadrons of the TEJAS MK-1A and has committed towards inducting at least seven squadrons of the fifth generation Indian fighter Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) which is also progressing very fast.

The TEJAS MK-2 fighter is intended to be the replacement for the Mirage 2000 and Jaguar fighters when they are due for phasing out after a decade.

Sharing details on the IAF plans for future inductions, Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari had stated that the force is looking at inducting aircraft only under the Make in India plan which includes the TEJAS MK-1A, TEJAS MK-2, AMCA along with the 114 multirole fighter aircraft.

The IAF has also decided that all its future surface-to-air ground weapon systems would be made in India and a large number of indigenous radars have already been deployed in operational areas.
That's after so much backlash on SM. Eh... Except Navy, forces are not really "committed" to anything.

What is all this commitment talk, why not place order for 6 squadron of mk2 in advance, and follow on when production picks up

There would be neither TDs, nor PVs nor LSPs like in Tejas Mk-1 program, there would be only 2 IOC standard pre-production aircrafts & 2 FOC standard pre-production aircrafts for Mk-2

Then what are these IOC and FOC for?

Being a developer or manufacturer, you could say anything. But the moment user term teh IOC as prototype and ask for change, there is nothing much for you to do. Same we have seen in Mk1.

This was what IAF has been saying since 2018. Twitteratis could keep on dreaming that they pressurize IAF to do damage control.
IAF may or may not care about public opinion but our civilian government do cares about public opinion and our government can surely make IAF care about public opinion.
At the end of day this is India and not Pakistan; out democratically elected civilian government controls all aspect of governance (even armed forces). Our politicians are the top bosses in the government.

Then for damage control, they could have forced IAF to say 12 sqds, right?

We are not USA and IAF do not have black cheque to place order and pay advance and wait for years to come. They will take decisions according to their requirements and cash limitations. One of the common things I observed in many forum members is they speak as if money is not at all a constraint and there is free flow of cash to do what ever they please. I wish that could be true but reality is far from that.

When you buy your own product there are many benefits like you ll buy that in rupee , money circulates in economy , Provides local companies further resources to develop new products , Export potential increases , your exposure to geopolitical crisis decreases . So investing 5 billion on foreign product is not same as investing 5 billion on local one .

Just stating in general . Not talking abt tejas mk2 .

IAF’s obsession with MMRCA/Rafale is 2+ decades old. They haven’t adjusted their approach despite much changing in the meantime. It’s not 2001 anymore and LCA still a pipe dream.

In 2022 LCA MK.2 is a 17.5T MMRCA in its own right. Apparently IAF objected to the MWF (medium weight fighter) nomenclature after ADA created a larger airframe from what was originally planned so instead of doggedly pursuing 100+ Rafale IAF ought to be reimagining their plans based on the changed environment that now exists domestically and in the region.

who else is buying 100+ jets off the shelf other than the oil rich Arabs with no industry to speak of? Koreans, Turks and even Indonesians are thinking about next gen projects of their own. Even Pakis have JF-17 as their backbone and default solution.

So IAF’s world view is that Indian industry are on par with Egyptians, Malaysians etc who are seeking licence assembly of 4th gen jets- ironically HAL is in talks to setup LCA assembly in both (not that I expect this to fructify )

LCA MK.2 can do >90% of the mission profiles of Rafale for maybe 60-70% of the cost. The only real thing Rafale will have on MK.2 come 2030s is payload/range and a slight edge in EW. So yes buy a couple more SQNs of Rafale for DPSA role but 114 more? 6 SQNs of MRFA can easily pay for 10++ LCA MK.2 SQNs. A force whose fleet strength is in freefall isn’t thinking about this?
Bro mk2 is on paper, but Rafale F4 is coming. There is a difference. Unless already with IAF and tested we can't compare both.

You are comparing someone who has done IIT and IIM and is CEO of some big tech with lot of field experience WITH someone who is preparing for JEE and wants to be next google.

Sorry to be so direct.

USA doesn't pay upfront for all these jets. What it does is commit upfront in clear numbers so that manufactures can plan accordingly. And then it buys them batch by batch continuously.

We can do the same.

No we can't because the vendors doesn't trust us. They trust the US far more than us because the US consistently stands by its word and contracts whereas GoI breaks contracts all the time.

THIS

In fact, it's a studied fact that for every unit dollar spend on domestic aerospace industry, it has a GDP multiplier effect of 3-4x

In fact, it's not just OEM, Tier 1/2/3 suppliers. They pay wages, those highly educated, relatively young engineers and technicians spend their wages on goods and services that are usually higher end, in urban areas and provided by organised sector companies.

Assuming a tax-GDP ratio of 25%, you can comfortable say that every rupee spend on domestic industry makes pays 75 paisa back in taxes that very year. It's a fallacy they don't think about this.
