LCA isn't cheap after aesa radar, integrate ew suite smart weapons...... One aesa module itself cost 1000 dollars if it's is GaA.
The indigenous items are not valued in dollars. If large scale manufacturing is done, cost will be drastically reduced.

If India gets to write the codes of the radar while only replacing the modules, then it is possible to work out of the box.
That was sarcasm. Things will be even bleak if India gets to write the code and that is not the point heck it won't even happen.

For Indians to write the code it has to be Uttam. Which brings us back to level 0. Uttam will need even more time for integration and testing, given it had no prior flight experience in a fighter jet. If ELTA or Thales wins the contract they will have an upper hand in integration especially with missiles.

But desi is always better especially when it comes to future add-ons and what not.

But I digress and let's not go haywire over petite stuff.

We should have a dedicated thread for our INDIAN DEFENSE COMPANIES discussing their performance and reviews. Not just for the information on stock prices but...we can share a lot of insight into what all technologies our companies, especially the private ones have in ONE SINGLE REPOSITORY.
I wholeheartedly support this move. :balleballe:

This is a quote from Trishul Trident Blog.

If and when it is implemented (it is still awaiting authorisation from the Govt of India), the planned 83 Tejas Mk.1As will use the GE-supplied F404-IN20 turbofans, and after these engines reach the end of their total technical service lives (TTSL), they will be replaced by a new 98kN-thrust (with afterburning) turbofan that will use the M88-2 engine’s core section supplied off-the-shelf by France’s SAFRAN.

My question is, are we not going to use the new Kaveri engine in the Tejas Mk1a SP, as soon as it is available to us, after all tests and other stuff done? If we have our own, higher rated engine, why not integrate it as soon as possible? What's stopping HAL from doing so?

Does Tejas MK1A have the inlet size to take in air for 100kN engine? I think that is the reason why F414 was not used. I don't see any way in which M88 core 100kN engine being used on MK1A, even if we get it. Likewise, even Kaveri 100kN variants.

Next, M88 has not yet been rated to the thrust to weight of F414. M88 has thrust to weight of 8.35 while F414 has thrust to weight of 8.95. It is mostly foreign lobby that wants to denigrate India that keeps repeating that M88 core will be used. If that was the case, Snecma wouldn't have told that Kaveri is 75% complete. If core itself is not complete, kaveri would be pretty much imported engine.

Ok, if not 98KN, we can downrate it to 90-95KN, but my point is what's stopping HAL to integrate new Kaveri as soon as we have it ready? Why will they be waiting for f404 to die out to integrate kaveri?

Kaveri will not be ready till 2019 and after that integration with Tejas will take couple of years as Tejas has been optimised for F404 as of now. By then, MK2 will roll out in special series production.

Kaveri is specifically meant for Tejas and will definitely see flight in Tejas. Mk2 is guaranteed to have Kaveri. I am not sure if HAL wants Kaveri 90kN engine for just 140+ tejas MK1A. Once MK2 comes in, MK1A will be out of favour. So, what calculations will be used for MK1A upgrade to Kaveri is something I don't know. It is possible that F404 will be replaced. Only time will tell if HAL will cannibalise Mk1A and use it in MK2, disbanding Mk1A permanently or upgrade to Kaveri

11 by the end of fiscal 2017, which ends in March 2018 for India.

5 have been delivered, and SP-5 and SP-7 are both close to first flights. That would mean 7 delivered by end-November or early December. and then 1 per month till March 2018. That is the target.
