Okay, Can they fight on their own OR now need to be protected by MKIs ? Last time, it was 29s provided them cover from 16s.

Question is only if these updates are worth $ 2 Billion.
Naturally they are fully multirole platforms but optimised for A2G missions and this is within the IAF's operational mantra.

They are worth the money considering the operational benefits they bring at that cost point.

That is how it should be ..

Exactly. If the IAF is really going to send the Tejas upfront the for once I would be deeply impressed by their willpower. IAF is an excellent operations organization. Wish some of them would grow into a visionary too.

Tejas has all the attributes you need to bring the focus back onto the main business.

Sukhois are simply too expensive and besides their wider envelop should be spared for deep ingress and establishment of air dominance over enemy territory. Sundry Migs, Jags and Mirages can help in filling up the gaps in multifarious ways. But if you need to put an extraordinary amount of force, at/near the borders, from extraordinary number of directions, without appearing too aggro, then LCA is the best.

Imagine multiple 30/40 million USD LCAs flying in from multiple ALGs and Forward Bases, armed with hardened GPS and Laser guided munitions changing the face of battle and then a follow up of even more LCAs from even more unpredictable directions armed merely with iron bombs but this time changing the landscape itself. All the time flooding the opponents air domination planes from several different directions, while in area/point defence roles. Chidiya bhi par nahi maar payegi.

I get your point, what about the airframe will it able to carry for another 15 years ?
Of course. Dassault fighters airframes are very strong. It's one effect of the Delta planform (with a
thick connection between wing and fuselage)

Scheduled weapon trials, preparations are underway to test the Beyond Visual Range DERBY & the PYTHON-5 missiles in the first few weeks of July in Jamnagar. These weapon trials are part of the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) mandate.
Continuing with its successful stride of flight trails in 2016, India's Tejas achieved a major milestone in February 2016. One of the limited series production (LSP) platforms fired a Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) missile DERBY for the first time.
However, the tests did not yield the expected results as the DERBY missile caused excessive vibrations to the Tejas structure. As per detailed analysis by ADA the problem was found to be caused due to an inherent flaw with the missile and had got nothing to do with the Tejas.
It is also learnt that the problems have been sorted out and the Tejas test platform has been tweaked appropriately to accomodate and fire both the missiles.
The Israeli PYTHON and DERBY series of missiles are one of the most advanced AAM systems in the world. Rafael has delivered 100 Python-5 missiles to India. The DERBY Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) Air-To-Air Missile, is a medium-range (~50 km) active-radar seeker missile. Though technically not part of the "Python" family, the missile is basically an enlarged PYTHON-4 with an active-radar seeker. The DERBY BVR missile includes ECCM features. Like the PYTHON short range air-to-air missile, the DERBY has the same canards (wings), warhead, rocket motor design and proximity fuze and a dramatic increase in range. It's launch weight is 118kg with a range of 63km.
The IAF has procured the DERBY BVR-AAM over the indigenous ASTRA BVR-AAM to expedite the induction of TEJAS into its arsenal. The DERBY BVR-AAM missile is a tried and tested weapon. The DERBY has a range of 50 km, compared with 80 km of the ASTRA missile.
Indian engineers have already integrated & tested the previous generation of DERBY missiles on the Tejas MK-1 jet, which was demonstrated for the first time in the Iron fist 2016 Exercise where it demonstrated its swing role capabilities while engaging ground based target and switch to fire BVR missile in same mission simultaneously. This was a significant achievement in ensuring engagement of hostile intrusions in the beyond visual range combat scenarios, it is also worthy to note that only a select few have this aggregated capability.
It should be noted that TEJAS has already completed the weapons trails of the Russian R-73 missile.

Same reason as when newly inducted Sukhoi 30 were initially stationed in Pune (near to HAL Nashik)

The Tejas is designed to carry a veritable plethora of air to air, air to surface, precision guided and standoff weaponry. Inthe air to air arena, the Tejas carries long range beyond visual range weapons, with highly agile high off-boresight missiles to tackle any close combat threat. A wide variety of air to ground munitions and an extremely accurate navigation and attack system allow it to prosecute surface targets over land or at sea with unparalleled accuracy, giving the Tejas true multi/swing role capability.

IAF to induct first squadron of homegrown Tejas tomorrow

BENGALURU: Indian Air Force will raise the first squadron of home-grown Light Combat AircraftTejaswith the induction of two aircraft into the force here tomorrow.

State-run HAL will hand over the first two Tejas aircraft toIAFwhich will make up the 'Flying Daggers' 45, the name of the first squadron of the LCA.

The LCA squadron induction ceremony will be held at the Aircraft System Testing Establishment here in the presence of Air Marshal Jasbir Walia, Air Officer Commanding-in Chief, Southern Air Command, officials said.

The aircraft are likely to perform a sortie during the induction ceremony.

The squadron will be based inBENGALURUfor the first two years before being moved to Sulur inTamil Nadu.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, who on May 17 took his maiden flight in Tejas, had termed the aircraft as "good" for induction.

IAF has said the idea is to have a total of six aircraft this financial year and about eight in the next.

Tejas will feature in combat plan of the IAF next year and will be deployed in forward bases also, it has said.

Stating that LCA squadron should be formed by July, Defence MinisterManohar Parrikarhad earlier this month said "next year I think two MiG-21 squadrons are being decommissioned; this will go into initially replacing them."

LCAs are better than the MiGs which are old and parts are difficult to get, he had said.

All squadrons of Tejas will be made up of 20 planes in total, including four in reserve.

As per the plan, while 20 would be inducted under the "Initial Operational Clearance", another 20 will be inducted later with Beyond Visual Range Missile (BVR) and some other features.

IAF plans to induct over 80 aircraft with better specifications known as Tejas 1A.

The upgraded version of Tejas, with Active Electrically Scanned Array Radar, Unified Electronic Warfare Suite, mid-air refuelling capacity and advanced beyond the vision range missiles, will cost between Rs 275 crore and Rs 300 crore.

While the idea to have an indigenous fighter aircraft was conceptualised in 1970s, actual work started on the aircraft only in the 1980s and the first flight took place in January 2001.

What does the fact that air cover was required say about a plane's A2A capability?

In an A2G mission, the aircraft carries heavy munitions & external fuel tanks and will be much less maneuverable than in an A2A profile. Therefore obviously it will require another aircraft to provide cover. The M2K might still carry some BVR missiles for some basic self defence, but it won't be safe without a separate aircraft for cover.

Even US uses its F16 to provide air cover F15s. Does that mean F15s are not good A2A fighters?

Tejas Will Join Air Force Tomorrow. Your Sneak Peek.

The Tejas fighter will be inducted into the Indian Air Force on Friday

It's been almost every Air Chief's favourite whipping boy - an Indian-built fighter jet delayed so inordinately that it came to be seen as a promise that would never be kept.

But three decades after the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft went into development, there is a grudging acceptance that the fighter which will be officially inducted into the Air Force tomorrow in Bengaluru is, in many ways, world-class.

While the delay in delivery cannot be justified, there have been fierce debates on why that happened. State-run Hindustan Aeronautics or HAL, which is the lead player in the Tejas project, says the air force kept shifting the goal post on what exactly it wanted from the jet. The manufacturer also says it was hit by sanctions imposed by the US after the Pokhran nuclear test in 1998, which placed crucial technology out of reach.

The Air Force, for its part, has insisted there are better options available in the world market, jets built by manufacturers who have been in the business of military aviation for decades. The Tejas, they have argued in the past, will be obsolete by the time it enters Air Force squadron service.

Except it isn't. Not in the least.

Equipped with a modern Israeli multi-mode radar, the Elta 2032, state-of-the-art Derby air-to-air missiles to attack enemy jets, and modern laser designator and targeting pods to hit ground targets, the Tejas is, in many ways, as capable as the French-built Mirage 2000, the aircraft used by HAL as its bench mark. Every pilot that has tested the jet has sworn by the Tejas's flight control system and the ease with which it manoeuvres. Not a single Tejas fighter has been lost to an accident during flight tests during 3,000 sorties.

More than 3000 sorties of the Tejas fighter have been flown to date

Confronted by these facts, critics of the jet say the Tejas is not indigenous at all. They point out that the engine is American, its radar and weapons Israeli, its ejection seat British -al that in addition to several other imported systems and subsystems. HAL counters that leading Western designs like the French Rafale and the Swedish Gripen also have imported systems because it's simply too expensive and too time-consuming to develop components that have been perfected and are available for purchase.

So has the Tejas programme added to India's engineering and scientific knowledge? It has. The fly-by-wire system gives computer-controlled inputs to charter the flight of the aircraft - and it's completely Indian. To deal with enemy jets, the Mission Computer which processes data provided by sensors like the radar is Indian. In fact, the hardware and the software of the Mission Computer has been designed around an open architecture framework which means that it can be upgraded in the future. The jet itself is constructed using Indian-made carbon fibre composites which are light-weight and ultra-strong alternatives to metal. A host of general systems dealing with everything from fuel management to steering of the nose-wheel are all made in India. A key sensor, the Tarang Radar Warning Radar, which lets the pilot know of enemy aircraft or surface-to-air missiles in the vicinity of the Tejas, is also Indian.

The Tejas fighter has state of the art Derby air-to-air missiles

Modern fighter aircraft, including the air force's top gun, the Sukhoi - 30, are notoriously unreliable and maintenance-heavy. Less than 60 per cent of Sukhoi fleet is available at any one time to conduct missions, a huge concern for the air force. HAL says the Tejas will be available more than 70 per cent of the time when called in for missions and are targeting a minimum of 80 per cent, far in excess of what the IAF is presently able to achieve with most of its other jets.

Tomorrow, when the Indian Air Force's 45 squadron, the "Flying Daggers", take ownership of their first fighters, the Tejas programme will have turned over to an all-new page. As a light fighter based on requirements that were last updated more than a decade ago , the Tejas will never be among the best fighters in the world. It will, however, provide the Indian Air Force far more than what they had initially wanted - a MiG-21 replacement.

In the Tejas, the air force has a modern fighter which will only get better through modifications and additions to its capabilities.
