HAL and DRDO working on two separate AESA radar for Fighters.

In what would mean two separate active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar efforts in country, it has now been learnt that HAL's Strategic Electronic Research Design Centre (SLRDC) in Hyderabad is also kickstarting a programme to build an indigenous AESA radar for airborne platforms. It is already known that the DRDO's Electronics Research and Development Establishment (LRDE) working on AESA radar.

The SLRDC division's other planned products include Combined Interrogator and Transponder, Advanced radio Altimter, Software Defined Radio, Secure Datalink, Ku-Band SATCOM, Weather Radar, SSDVRS, Diital Audio Control System, Traffic Collision Avoidance System, INS/GPS and Synthetic Aperature Radar. While SLRDC has contributed avionics and certain cockpit equipment to the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Su-30MKI, MiG-BIS & MiG-27, Jaguar DARIN II & III, LCA Tejas, Cheetah, Chetak, Dornier and Boeing P-8I, it is now gearing up to build avionics for new and future platforms including the LCH, LUH , HTT-40, Tejas Mk.II, FGFA, MTA , IJT and the upgraded Su-30MKI.

DRDOhas also developed L and S band T/R modules and has established production base indigenously in partnership with Indian industry.

for a fighter, we need X- band asea radar. That's why we need foreign JV.

now only we have selected jv foreign partner. If we developed x band aesa,there is no need to jv at all.

Yes they will tell a lot,ground situation is different.

The news of selection of JV partner was done long time back, The news is repeated just of new updates ..

IIRC, in AI-2013 ELTA stall had a large poster with 2052 for LCA or along those lines.

There was also a news report about somebody saying ELTA will build LCA's AESA.

This design is specific to LCA.

"X-Band" AESA radar TR module already developed,shown and in operation condition.+ Indian Industry can produce this TR module.

don't confuse with x band phased array since u concluded. If india developed it, i am happy.

If this report was already written in june 2013, then AESA radar should be ready.
When I say ready, whatever is described , should be designed and tested i.e. practifally working . and certified.

If indeed DRDO claims that AESA is ready, then what prevents the AESA to be tested now , rather than wait for tejas mark 2 ?

few things come to my mind
(1) either DRDO is overstating and tomtomming merely theory and no success demo. And thus not a certified product.
or
(2) DRDO is being extremely cautious and hence willing to wait.
or
(3) DRDO is already testing it with tejas and is keeping it secret.

experts, pls clarify this.

We don't have any X band array for fighters. We are waiting for the Israelis to provide the technology rather than us wasting time developing one as of today. We will develop our own eventually.

There are many companies which have made fighter based X band modules, but making one doesn't mean it will clear requirements. Even antennas have their own quality configurations.

Let me give you a very basic example using computer configs,
Intel Celeron 566 MHz
128 MB SD RAM
15 GB HDD

vs

Intel Core i7 3.4GHz
32 GB DDR4 SDRAM
2TB HDD

Can these two configs be compared? So, it is not necessary that we are capable of building antennas that are as sensitive as what IAF really need. Just building AESA modules doesn't mean parity with the west.

This is one of the parameters that determines quality of an antenna.


And this,


Without knowing these, the effective difference between our antennas and antennas from the west could be the same as the desktop configs I gave above.

Then there is manufacturing and that's a whole different ballgame.
