is the site still under attack?????????
We're running a few proxy servers on top of the site. Attack or no attack, these additional processes consume a hell lot of CPU. Now, Sbox is a CPU hog (as you have already seen), activating it leads to a drastic increase in server load.

Constant for months. Eats up a lot of bandwidth.
If its so constant, there's got to be a way of reaching the source.
Coming to the topic, I hate the lately too much of religious debate going on over here. This is supposed to be a defence & geopolitical platform.
But it sometimes looks like turning into another of those slugfest internet forums which people frequent to vent out their frustrations. We should instill more discipline in terms of what gets discussed and what not, jack of all trades and master of none doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
However, I do love the vigor with which so many posters and admins have been contributing quality to the forum consistently. And that is the key - consistency with quality. The forum has been very professional in its conduct and the mods/admins have not been agenda or ideology driven while governing the threads.
There are plenty of cool heads and strong shoulders here that keep the place from slipping. That makes DFI a dark horse of long race.

Regards,
Virendra

What I like about DFI: Actually a lot of things, but broadly:
a) the freedom. The freedom given to each member by the forum is fantastic. I hope this trend continues.
b) And the fact that the DFI is Indian(or atleast pro-Indian).
c) Less number of pakis. It seems many people are complaining about lack of pakis. And I can understand their view because I held the same view when I first came to DFI. Before I came to DFI, I spent time at the paki fora and when I came to DFI, I missed trolling with pakis. I thought pakis on DFI would be fantastic especially since they can be taken on our terms instead of theirs. But, I came to realise that pakis are only good for trolling. Entertaining them will be at the cost of proper discussion. One will be forever stuck at proving to them that Kasab is not a hindu or that 26/11 is not an inside job... With no pakis, one can go ahead and discuss better things instead of such nonsense.

What I dont like about DFI:
Lack of dedicated threads per subject. Each new headline/breaking news gets its own thread. Consequently, the discussions happen to be narrowly focused lacking broader perspective. The current style of 'seperate thread for each new news item' is practiced by the paki forums also. And it works for them, because they are primarily focused on flaming and trolling to get maximum poster activity which generates money for them. But such a scheme discourages any proper debate on the subject at hand. For a serious discussion, dedicated threads for a subject are better option(like BR).

wat i love- source of great information
wat i hate- not so open minded crowd, traditional anti-commie crowd
wow! You mean commie crowd are open-minded and non-commies are closed minded?!!

Anyway, most bastions(media, politics, NGOs, social commentators/analysts, writers/poets & education) of power in Indian society are under the firm control of the commies, so even if the people on this forum are not open-minded towards commies, they happen to lose nothing. Infact, in the interest of balance of power, it is better if people remain anti-commie because the commies are already very powerful and influential in the Indian system.

It is because of our fundamental difference in structure and software.

However, if you can report/pm which threads you think should be merged we can do that easily.

That's actually a software limitation of BRF :p. They use a very old version of phpBB.

Yep, one can notice that their software is quite old almost obsolete. However, regardless of the software, IMHO it is a good policy to have threads for specific subject and to strictly maintain that. The Mods at BR do that job quite admirably, regardless of their limitations and other flaws. At DFI, I see too many threads that are based on particular news item or event. And most of these threads are short-lived because the discussion is based on that single news item or event. So, there is lack of broader perspective.

I think if the Mods can take up this issue and set up thread such that they are based on subjects(rather than news items), then it would be better for broader and indepth discussion. It would also be good as a reference point. For example: a dedicated subject for plight of TN fishermen at the hands of SLN, instead of a new thread every time a related news breaks out.

Johnee,

Actually many people don't like the single thread system where many discussions are lost in the maze of so many things being discussed in one thread.

Yes we do agree that sometimes multiple threads are opened but they get reported and merged. Stickies are there to have consolidated information too.

One more thing, having separate threads also helps us in getting search results for what we are looking for.

I raised this issue on SB before. If you see all the hot threads, almost none of them are related to defence. This is a defence forum right. Shouldn't we be discussing more about defence?
