Rafael will supply 164 examples of its Litening targeting pod to the Indian air force, for use on four types of combat aircraft including New Delhi’s Sukhoi Su-30 fighters.

Guy Oren, director of Rafael's electro-optical systems unit, says the pods will be delivered in the next couple of years.

An advanced version of the Litening 4 – the Litening 4 I – will be supplied. The improved system has been equipped with upgraded infrared cameras and a charge-coupled device colour camera to help identify targets on the ground, particularly dense areas, Rafael says.

The company adds that the new version doubles up as a surveillance and reconnaissance system in addition to being a targeting pod.

In February it was announced that the planned Litening acquisition would fall under a larger $500 million deal between India and Israel, which would also see the Rafael Spice 250 precision-guided bomb provided to New Delhi.

I don't think Kaveri can ever be scaled up into a AL-31 type engine.

AL-31 maintains a much higher BPR and a significantly higher OPR.

Kaveri has a much lower BPR and maintaining fan pressure would be difficult if its scaled up. The fan is driven by the low pressure turbine. If you try to scale up the fans to achieve higher thrusts the work load for low pressure turbine will increase which will be met only if the temperatures are even higher then the present or the OPR is increased. Higher temperatures for Kaveri core are already problematic. OTOH the OPR increase without the temperature increase and based merely on the compressor redesign may actually end up demanding a further compressor stage or interstage which will increase the weight, which again is problematic for the Kaveri.

I had at one time wished for Kaveri to be used for say MTA or an Indian version of Tu-22. But its not gonna happen.

AL-31 is at the sweet spot regarding BPR. If I recollect correctly the BPR hovering just at or above 0.5 is regarded as ideal for a Mach 2+ capable fighter.

But that should not stop us from being excited about Kaveri. There is a lot that can be done with Kaveri. If we need an AL-31 then we should be aiming for those performance parameters which will entail several different things. To get our hands on those several different things, Kaveri is a good start.

India pushes talks with Russia for 5th-generation fighters and ‘Super Sukhois’

NEW DELHI: India is finally taking forward the negotiations with Russia on stalled mega projects to jointly develop a futuristic fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) as well as upgrade its existing Sukhoi-30MKI jets into 'Super Sukhois' with advanced avionics and weapons.

Though India and France are now close to inking the estimated 7.8 billion euro deal for 36 Rafale jets, the defence ministry acknowledges that just 36 fighters will not be enough to stem the country's haemorrhaging air combat power.

The IAF is down to just 33 fighter squadrons — including 11 obsolete MiG-21 and MiG-27 squadrons slated for retirement — when at least 42 are required to keep the "collusive China-Pakistan threat" at bay.

The "multi-pronged strategy" (see graphic) to progressively crank up airpower ranges from inducting the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft to exploring a second line of fighter production in the country, with the American F/A-18 and F-16 as well as Swedish Gripen-E already in contention for this proposed 'Make in India' project.

Apart from these 4th-generation fighters, the defence ministry is now finally working towards inking the final R&D design contract with Russia this year for the Indian "perspective multi-role fighter", a variant of the Russian single-seat FGFA called Sukhoi T-50 or PAK-FA.

"Apart from resolving technical and cost issues, Russia has also agreed to allow IAF test pilots to fly its prototypes now," said a source. The final R&D contract for the FGFA was on hold till now despite the two countries having first inked an inter-governmental agreement in 2007 and then following it up with a $295 million preliminary design contract in 2010, as was earlier reported by TOI.

Under the main design contract to be executed in over six years now, India and Russia will chip in around $4 billion each for prototype development, testing and infrastructure build-up. The overall cost for producing 127 of these single-seat fighters — which will combine stealth, super-cruise and multisensor integration — in India will be about $25 billion.

Amid all this, the Indian defence establishment is also trying to ensure "maximum operationally availability" of the existing fighters at any given time. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar, for instance, says serviceability of Sukhois has jumped to 60% now from an alarming 46% earlier.
"The aim is to achieve 75% serviceability. This has been done with an active tripartite dialogue among Russia, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and IAF to ensure better availability of spares and maintenance for the Sukhois," a source said.

This, in turn, has led to renewal of the plan to upgrade the jets into 'Super Sukhois', with advanced AESA (active electronically scanned array) radars and long-range stand-off missiles. "The technical requirements should be finalised this year, with the contract being inked next year," said the source.

Super Sukhoi upgrades to come with Steep price for India

India’s plans to become the latest country to jump on the 5th-Generation bandwagon by Jointly developing FGFA based on Sukhoi’s T-50 Stealth aircraft might be delayed since India and Russia are pushing for development of Super Sukhoi upgrade package for its current fleet of Sukhoi-30MKI front-line jet which might up at steep price likely to delay FGFA programme . According to media reports, agreement on Super Sukhoi upgrade package most likely will happen in next 6 months which is pegged at 8$billion to upgrade India’s entire fleet of nearly 270 Sukhoi-30MKI combat jets . According to latest report Super Sukhoi upgrade package will large concentrate on bringing major changes to it Avionics , Software, Pilot interface and Integration of new AESA Multi-mode Radar . Few Sukhoi-30s will have strengthed air frame to support BrahMos-A but all others will be BrahMos-NG and Nirbhay ALCM capable bringing a host of new standoff weapons to India’s Sukhoi-30s arsenal . European companies like MBDA have offered latest weapons like Brimstone which is an air-launched ground attack missile and Meteor which is an active radar guided beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) for integration with India’s Sukhoi-30MKI fleet, but it is likely India will go for improved weapons systems of Russian origins after Super Sukhoi upgrade. Russia will be tasked to develop a prototype and certify Super Sukhoi upgrade aircraft before passing on the TOT for local up gradation by HAL in India replicating Indo-Russian Mig-29UPG modernisation program . The steep price of Super Sukhoi upgrade will see further delays to next Indo-Russian FGFA project due to budgetary constraints .
