If true this is huge, but I can't really believe it. Why would the Russians field it and expose it to US and Israeli spy aircrafts at this point?

If you look at the dimensions of the video you can tell it was cut from a much wider shot and they pretend it was taken from a cell phone in vertical position.

LOOKS LIKE RUSSIA HAS JUST DEPLOYED TWO OF ITS BRAND NEW SU-57 STEALTH JETS TO SYRIA
Feb 22 2018

QUITE SURPRISINGLY, RUSSIA SENT TWO OF ITS SU-57 STEALTH JETS TO SYRIA. SO, ONCE AGAIN, MOSCOW WILL USE THE SYRIAN AIR WAR AS A TEST BED FOR ITS MOST ADVANCED “HARDWARE”. BUT THE DEPLOYMENT IS BOTH AN OPPORTUNITY AND A RISK...

...
Interestingly, the aircraft appeared to be in “clean” configuration, that is to say they didn’t carry the large fuel tanks used for ferry flights last year.

Although the deployment of two Russian 5th generation aircraft (that has not been officially confirmed yet) came somehow unexpected, it must be noted that it’s not the first time that Moscow deployed some of its advanced “hardware” to Syria. For instance, on Sept. 13, 2017, the Russian Air Force deployed some of its MiG-29SMT multirole combat aircraft to Khemimim airbase for the first time. Previously, in February 2016, it was the turn of the still-in-development

Tu-214R
spyplane to exploit the air war in Syria to test its sensor packages.

As reported several times commenting the above mentioned deployments, Russia has used the Syrian Air War to showcase and test its latest weapons systems. However, most analysts agree that the deployment of the Su-57 is probably mostly meant to send a strong message about air superiority over Syria, where Russian and American planes

have almost clashed quite a few times recently (with conflicting reports of the incidents).

Deploying two new stealth jet in theater is a pretty smart move for diplomatic and marketing purposes: as already explained questions continue to surround the Su-57 program as a consequence of delays, engine problems and subsequent difficult export (last year the Indian Air Force reportedly demanded an end to the joint Indo-Russian stealth fighter project). Albeit rather symbolic, the deployment of a combat aircraft (still under development) is obviously also a huge risk.

First, there’s a risk of being hit (on the ground or during a mission: the attack on Latakia airbase or the recent downing of a Su-25 are just reminders of what may happen over there) and second, there’s a risk of leaking intelligence data to the enemy.

This is what we explained in a recent article about the reasons why U.S. and Russia are shadow-boxing over Syria:

USAF Lt. Col. Pickart’s remarks about the Russians “deliberately testing or baiting us” are indicative of a force managing interactions to collect sensor, intelligence and capability “order of battle”. This intelligence is especially relevant from the current Syrian conflict as it affords both the Russians and the U.S. with the opportunity to operate their latest combat aircraft in close proximity to gauge their real-world sensor capabilities and tactical vulnerabilities, as well as learn doctrine. It is likely the incidents occurring now over Syria, and the intelligence gleaned from them, will be poured over in detail for years to come.

For instance, we have often explained how Raptors act as “electronic warfare enabled sensor-rich multi-role aircraft” over Syria, providing escort to strike packages into and out of the target area while gathering details about the enemy systems and spreading intelligence to other “networked” assets supporting the mission to improve the overall situational awareness. In fact, the F-22 pilot leverage advanced onboard sensors, as the AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, to collect valuable details about the enemy, performing ELINT-like missions and then sharing the “picture” with attack planes, command and control assets, as well as Airborne Early Warning aircraft.

In fact, even though it’s safe to assume that the stealth prototype will not use their radar and that the Russians will escort the Su-57s with Su-30/35 Flanker derivatives during their trips over Syria in order to prevent the U.S. spyplanes from being able to “characterize” the Su-57’s signature at specific wavelengths as reportedly done by the Russians with the U.S. F-22s, it’s safe to assume the U.S. and NATO will put in place a significant effort to gather any little detail about the performance and operational capabilities of the new Russian stealth jet.

By the way, before you ask, the risk of confrontation with their U.S. stealth counterparts has not been mentioned, since it seems quite unlikely at the moment..

You got to give it to Putin , he is a tactical genius, with big ba..so! :biggrin2:
But it is indeed risky, since those fighters will be targeted now by everybody. The rebels will try to damage or destroy them for PR, US, Israel and NATO powers will send any aircraft with intelligence capability behind them and let's not forget that they are still prototypes so far, that still can have technical teething problems. So either they are extremely confident, or risking too much.
Also if it's a political sign, to whom? Israel or Turkey?

Yes, T-50-10 and T-50-11 (as Stage-II production configured ones) have arrived to Syria in the course of extensive military service and new weapons fire tests.

Viktor Murakhovsky: The appearance of the Su-57 in Syria is an absolutely justified decision

Viktor Murakhovsky: The appearance of the Su-57 in Syria - absolutely justified decisionFederal News Agency /

Late on the night of February 21, the Twitter social network spread information about the appearance in Tiras of T-50 aircraft - flight prototypes of the Russian multifunctional fighter of the fifth generation of the Su-57.

No, it's not fake.
Originally a photograph of a couple of Russian stealth fighters with chassis released accompanied by a Su-35S fighter, many aroused suspicions of falsification. However, the video that appeared later with the same T-50 pair, in the bearing line passing over the territory resembling the outskirts of the airbase "Khmeimim", most of the suspicions in the fake shot off.

By the morning of February 22, information appeared that would allow one to no longer assume, but to say yes, two T-50s actually enlarged on February 21 the aviation group of the Russian Air Force, deployed at the airbase "Khmeimim".

Apparently, the "fifties" were sent to Syria together with the four Su-35S multipurpose fighters, the Tu-154M passenger aircraft, as well as the radar-tracking aircraft and the A-50U guidance. A number of sources claim that four Su-25 attack aircraft were also present in this group.

There is an opinion that the replenishment of the Khmeimim grouping with new shock strikes is caused not so much by the need for rotation of equipment and flight personnel as by the "expected increase in the front of work" in the region of Eastern Guta in Syria. However, let's return to the main military sensation of last night - the first appearance of the T-50 in the war zone.

Notable event
With a request to comment on this event, the Federal News Agency appealed to the colonel in reserve Victor Murakhovsky , the editor-in-chief of the journal Arsenal of the Fatherland.

- Viktor Ivanovich, how true is the statement that one of the main criteria for adopting one or another type of military hardware (weapons, military and special equipment) for the Defense Ministry is now the results of testing this model in Syria?

- This statement is completely true. Even those samples that are still at the state testing stage are sent to Syria. Of course, we are talking about samples, which in principle can be used on the Syrian theater. I am clarifying this point, since there are examples of weapons that, in conflicts like the Syrian one, do not apply and, I hope, will not be applied at all.

- Well it is clear. I remember one time a submariner joked that having our ICBMs a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, the militants would already have been struck by the Bulava ... Let's talk, in fact, about the protagonists of the day: PAK FA, they are T-50s, they are also Su-57. Is it possible to consider the appearance of these aircraft in Syria as a really significant event, or is it a routine stage of experimental-combat operation?

Viktor Murakhovsky: The appearance of the Su-57 in Syria - absolutely justified decisionvk.com / Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

"We do not often have the opportunity to test the latest weapons in combat conditions." The Su-57 is an essentially new aircraft not only in terms of glider and on-board radio-electronic equipment, but also in airborne weapons. Accordingly, the possibility of testing a fifth-generation fighter in the Syrian theater is, of course, a notable event.

- But it is obvious that these tests will not be comprehensive?

- Of course, these tests will not be carried out in all respects. It is clear that in Syria we are not at war with a high-tech enemy. Therefore, with regard to the Su-57's ability to conduct air combat or break through the air defense, it remains at the disposal of the experimental-military operation at the respective ranges.

But the work in the automated control system of troops, the use of airborne weapons of the air-surface class, the peculiarities of operating the machine at a military aerodrome in terms of aerodrome and technical support and the preparation of pilots for departure, as well as many other aspects - all this can be fully worked out in Syria. That, in turn, will help a faster development of the aircraft in the pilot-military operation.

- Let's hope that it will be so. This, of course, is important in the light of the available information that this year a contract will be signed for the supply of an installment of fifth-generation fighter aircraft in the number of 12 aircraft. In other words, one squadron.

Advertising does not smell here
- Part of the Internet commentators took the appearance of the T-50 in Syria as an action, first of all, of a propaganda nature. Perhaps, even "tightened" by the Ministry of Defense on the date of February 23. Many seem clearly superfluous and even adventurous use of the fifth-generation multifunctional fighter in Syria, taking into account the yet incomplete full cycle of testing the machine, as well as the theoretical possibility of leakage of top secret information about the structure and characteristics of the newest fighter. Let's nevertheless be defined. Is the appearance of the Su-57 in Syria fully justified from the military-technical point of view? Or is this, first of all, really an advertising action of the Defense Ministry and the Defense Industry?

- The fighter is still far from launching into the mass series for our VKS. The possibility of supplying the machine for export is still far from the horizon. What, on the basis of this, can be an advertising campaign? The appearance in Syria of the BMPT, previously shown repeatedly at exhibitions, can be considered an advertising measure.

A single car was brought, tested in combat conditions, made sure that the declared characteristics were real, and this allowed not only to provoke interest in the BMPT from foreign customers, but also to start buying the car for our Defense Ministry. In the case of sending the Su-57 to Syria, nothing like this can be said. Here we are dealing with an absolutely logical use of the possibility to test fighter aircraft in combat conditions.

- Let's emphasize this point. The transfer of a pair of prototypes of the Russian multifunctional fighter of the fifth generation to Syria is justified?

- Yes, I consider this step of the RF Defense Ministry fully justified. The plane is now at the final stage of interfacing with a new ammunition of aviation weapons. But it's one thing to work at the Ashuluk training ground, and it's quite another matter in combat conditions. Thus, the emergence of our fifth-generation fighter aircraft in Syria should be seen as a necessity.

I don't think India is looking to marry Russia, it has the ability to have its own foreign policies serving its interest best. What India is looking for is some affordable marvels of defense purchases with some help in ToT as preferred/strategic partner. Look at the situation from this perspective India has considerable Challenge from China, Pakistan and Trump policies targeting India's export and immigration(IT industry) while Russia has to deal with almighty NATO (On papers) and US sanctions with low Oil prices (on the rise now)

India's wish list
S 400
Nuclear SSN
5th Gen Fighters
Nuclear Reactors
Cruise Missiles (Brahmos Mach 7 development)

But it got more difficult in the last 4 years, since the government is clearly aiming on the US. Except for the Ka226 giveaway, no major deal was sealed with Russia or? On the other side, MTA gone, FGFA in trouble, I 78 officially put...

It looks like Putin is becoming desperate to impress the Indians that it can actually deliver on PAKFA. Why would they send a prototype with old engines and has not fired any weapon in flight into an active combat area? Flight controls testing?

The Russians are even behind China in the race for 5th gen.

This is ahead of PAKFA:

3D-TVC is overrated. With TVC LOAL IR missiles, 3D-TVC is an unnecessary weight on an aircraft. If modern A2A missiles can handle 60-G turns then how effective is a 3D-TVCwhen a human pilot would black-out even at 8Gs?

Pentagon says Russia's Su-57 fighter is no threat to US forces if it's even in Syria

Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter, like China's Chengdu J-20, has become a bogeyman to the United States in the competition to possess the best fifth-generation fighters in the world.

But has the Su-57 made its debut in Syria? The Pentagon, won't confirm it.

"The addition of fifth-generation fighters into Syria would certainly not be in keeping with Russia's announced force drawdown," said Eric Pahon, Defense Department spokesman...

...On Thursday, Gen Mike Holmes, Air Combat Command commander, said he was unaware of reports surrounding the Su-57 in Syria, but added the situation in Syria grows more complex by the day.

"It's one thing to do the counter-air mission with a long lookout in front of you, it's different to do when everyone's tightly packed in there," Holmes said during a roundtable discussion with reporters here at the Air Force Association's Air Warfare symposium.

"So our guys will continue to prep for the scenarios that they're deployed to face," Holmes said.

When asked whether it was concerning to have another stealth aircraft in the mix, Holmes emphasized the tough environment and constricted air space in the region.

"Certainly, the higher the complexity and the higher the technology ... it raises the level of complexity for the crews to deal with," the commander said...

...Last month, the Air Force's deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance said that the Russian air force has been focusing on intently watching how fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft perform within the Syrian airspace.

"In the skies over Syria, it's really just been a treasure trove for [the Russians] to see how we operate," Lt. Gen. VeraLinn "Dash" Jamieson told congressional staffers and reporters during an Air Force Association briefing in Washington, D.C.

"Our adversaries are watching us, they're learning from us," she said at the time.

That same month two F-22 fighters intercepted two Russian Su-25 fighter jets, conducting multiple maneuvers, firing warning flares and, in one instance, aggressively flying to avoid colliding with one another.

A Russian Su-35 multi-role fighter was also involved. An F-22 ended up trailing the Su-35 after it flew across the river into territory deemed unsafe to coalition aircraft.

It looks like Putin is becoming desperate to impress the Indians that it can actually deliver on PAKFA. Why would they send a prototype with old engines and has not fired any weapon in flight into an active combat area? Flight controls testing?

The Russians are even behind China in the race for 5th gen.
R u nuts? Russians behind China in the race for 5th gen.:crazy:

You call Chinese j-31 and j-20 5th gen lol. Does it have AESA radar, sensor fusion, 5th gen engine, TVC, etc....

Those Chinese junks still need a decade to come near Russian pakfa and 15 years away from western standards. At best they are 4.5 gen Fighters with in built-in weapons bay.....

It's a no brainer, how can a prototype non-weapon firing plane be a threat to F-22s, SHs and F-15s, or Predators for that matter? What is it going to do against US planes, distract them by doing Pugachev cobra? Or maybe crash into an F-15 (they cannot crash into something that they cannot locate much more catch, so they have no chance of crashing into an F-22)?
You are dumb retard.
And poorly informed one.

T-50 have started weapons tests in mid 2016.
Including MWBs and FSBs fire tests.
There are 4 new weapon types left to integrate from 14 new types announced according to KTRV CEO Boris Obnosov.

But asianobserve lives in alternative reality anuway :)
