Viktor Murakhovsky: The appearance of the Su-57 in Syria - absolutely justified decision
Federal News Agency /
Late on the night of February 21, the Twitter social network spread information about the appearance in Tiras of T-50 aircraft - flight prototypes of the Russian multifunctional fighter of the fifth generation of the Su-57.
No, it's not fake.
Originally a photograph of a couple of Russian stealth fighters with chassis released accompanied by a Su-35S fighter, many aroused suspicions of falsification. However, the video that appeared later with the same T-50 pair, in the bearing line passing over the territory resembling the outskirts of the airbase "Khmeimim", most of the suspicions in the fake shot off.
By the morning of February 22, information appeared that would allow one to no longer assume, but to say yes, two T-50s actually enlarged on February 21 the aviation group of the Russian Air Force, deployed at the airbase "Khmeimim".
Apparently, the "fifties" were sent to Syria together with the four Su-35S multipurpose fighters, the Tu-154M passenger aircraft, as well as the radar-tracking aircraft and the A-50U guidance. A number of sources claim that four Su-25 attack aircraft were also present in this group.
There is an opinion that the replenishment of the Khmeimim grouping with new shock strikes is caused not so much by the need for rotation of equipment and flight personnel as by the "expected increase in the front of work" in the region of Eastern Guta in Syria. However, let's return to the main military sensation of last night - the first appearance of the T-50 in the war zone.
Notable event
With a request to comment on this event, the
Federal News Agency appealed to the colonel in reserve
Victor Murakhovsky , the editor-in-chief of the journal Arsenal of the Fatherland.
- Viktor Ivanovich, how true is the statement that one of the main criteria for adopting one or another type of military hardware (weapons, military and special equipment) for the Defense Ministry is now the results of testing this model in Syria?
- This statement is completely true. Even those samples that are still at the state testing stage are sent to Syria. Of course, we are talking about samples, which in principle can be used on the Syrian theater. I am clarifying this point, since there are examples of weapons that, in conflicts like the Syrian one, do not apply and, I hope, will not be applied at all.
- Well it is clear. I remember one time a submariner joked that having our ICBMs a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, the militants would already have been struck by the Bulava ... Let's talk, in fact, about the protagonists of the day: PAK FA, they are T-50s, they are also Su-57. Is it possible to consider the appearance of these aircraft in Syria as a really significant event, or is it a routine stage of experimental-combat operation?

"We do not often have the opportunity to test the latest weapons in combat conditions." The Su-57 is an essentially new aircraft not only in terms of glider and on-board radio-electronic equipment, but also in airborne weapons. Accordingly, the possibility of testing a fifth-generation fighter in the Syrian theater is, of course, a notable event.
- But it is obvious that these tests will not be comprehensive?
- Of course, these tests will not be carried out in all respects. It is clear that in Syria we are not at war with a high-tech enemy. Therefore, with regard to the Su-57's ability to conduct air combat or break through the air defense, it remains at the disposal of the experimental-military operation at the respective ranges.

But the work in the automated control system of troops, the use of airborne weapons of the air-surface class, the peculiarities of operating the machine at a military aerodrome in terms of aerodrome and technical support and the preparation of pilots for departure, as well as many other aspects - all this can be fully worked out in Syria. That, in turn, will help a faster development of the aircraft in the pilot-military operation.
- Let's hope that it will be so. This, of course, is important in the light of the available information that this year a contract will be signed for the supply of an installment of fifth-generation fighter aircraft in the number of 12 aircraft. In other words, one squadron.

Advertising does not smell here
- Part of the Internet commentators took the appearance of the T-50 in Syria as an action, first of all, of a propaganda nature. Perhaps, even "tightened" by the Ministry of Defense on the date of February 23. Many seem clearly superfluous and even adventurous use of the fifth-generation multifunctional fighter in Syria, taking into account the yet incomplete full cycle of testing the machine, as well as the theoretical possibility of leakage of top secret information about the structure and characteristics of the newest fighter. Let's nevertheless be defined. Is the appearance of the Su-57 in Syria fully justified from the military-technical point of view? Or is this, first of all, really an advertising action of the Defense Ministry and the Defense Industry?
- The fighter is still far from launching into the mass series for our VKS. The possibility of supplying the machine for export is still far from the horizon. What, on the basis of this, can be an advertising campaign? The appearance in Syria of the BMPT, previously shown repeatedly at exhibitions, can be considered an advertising measure.
A single car was brought, tested in combat conditions, made sure that the declared characteristics were real, and this allowed not only to provoke interest in the BMPT from foreign customers, but also to start buying the car for our Defense Ministry. In the case of sending the Su-57 to Syria, nothing like this can be said. Here we are dealing with an absolutely logical use of the possibility to test fighter aircraft in combat conditions.
- Let's emphasize this point. The transfer of a pair of prototypes of the Russian multifunctional fighter of the fifth generation to Syria is justified?
- Yes, I consider this step of the RF Defense Ministry fully justified. The plane is now at the final stage of interfacing with a new ammunition of aviation weapons. But it's one thing to work at the Ashuluk training ground, and it's quite another matter in combat conditions. Thus, the emergence of our fifth-generation fighter aircraft in Syria should be seen as a necessity.
