You can say whatever you want about what the Americans are saying, but lets face it.

But you cant argue with what Gen. North says about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery.
That doesnt mean that the Pak-fa is not going to be a good fighter, but given the huge lead that the US has in sensors. radars and avionics - I cant say that I would be very worried about the Pak_fa.

You cannot speculate anything. NOTHING about it has been released. But from the data we have.... I find the PAK-FA actually superior to the F-22.
It's radar......

Everything else, sensors, STEALTH, engines, ETC people speculate about are not to be trusted you know. The only thing Sukhoi gave us was it's pictures, Radar at 2008 airshow. And no matter what an expert you are, you can't calculate the RCS of an aircraft based on a couple of pics. What credible evidence is there now that the F-22 is superior to the PAK FA?

PAK FA engine postponed

Around the engine for the PAK FA project unfolds scandalous story. The right to create such an engine is challenged in the past year at the preliminary tender Defense Rybinsk Saturn and metropolitan Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Salut". Representatives of the "Salute" claim that their project is then scored a convincing victory, and believe that Defense should undertake a second, final stage of the tender. But the Defense Ministry with pulls. The guide Salyut fear that after the establishment of JDC military department can automatically give the order for engines for the PAK FA to the company. In the KLA also admit that the reason for delays in the other: the Ministry of Defense is now being discussed the option does not make the engine of the fifth-generation PAK FA existing samples, and to focus engineering resources on creating an engine of the fifth generation has the following modifications of the fighter.

"Salute" declares victory

On the first phase of the tender "cookie" is told in the Air Force and the "Salute." "We participated and" Saturn ", - says Director of Information Technology" Salute "Dmitry Eliseev. - Pre-tender consisted of two phases. Salyut performed work on both. In the summer of last year received the Commission's opinion, which says that we have fulfilled requirements of both phases of the contest without reproach. "Saturn" the first stage carried out with serious criticism, and the second stage did not comply.

The second stage of the tender Defense has not yet been announced. "Maybe someone at the top think that after the" Saturn "became part of the JDC, the question of the creator of the engine for the PAK FA decided to automatically" - complains Representative "Salute". The company believes this approach is wrong and going to continue to insist on holding the contest to determine who will act as the lead developer engine for fifth-generation fighter.

"We understand that the general management of the development work on the engine for the PAK FA will be for the JDC, but we also believe that the tender is required to even determine who will build a gas generator for the future of the engine, and on this basis to decide who will be the ideology of work over the engine for the PAK FA "- contains the position of his company Dmitry Eliseev.

In the KLA believe that the solution must take the Defense Ministry

Today's development of "Salute" - it is in any case, upgrading the engine of the fourth generation of the AL-31, reminiscent of the KLA. The prototype of the PAK FA aircraft experienced now fitted with an engine 117, which also represents a modification of the AL-31, performed Saturn. "The engines of the fifth generation are presented fundamentally different requirements, in particular in terms of radiozametnosti and visibility in the infrared range," - says Director of Corporate Communications KLA Konstantin Lantratov.

In the KLA admit that the Defense Ministry did not announce the final stage of the tender for the right to create an engine for the PAK FA is awaiting test results from the current aircraft engine. Representatives of the Ministry is something to think about. Do I need to do fifth-generation engine for the PAK FA right now? Is not it better to concentrate on production of engines for aircraft, which will monitor the PAK FA? If you start to drive today, for its production will require 5-7 years, it is in these terms is expected emergence modernizirovannnoy versions of the PAK FA.

"Decide to be the Defense Ministry - says Lantratov. - There will be whether they have money now to pay for the development of a new engine? Also need to assess possible risks: Is there a belief that the customer gets exactly the result which counts, it is in those terms? "

Experts say no hurry

"Defense is really nowhere to hurry - said deputy director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Konstantin Makiyenko. - Those deeply modernized engines fourth generation, which is a" Saturn "and" Salute ", now meet the needs of the Air Force, including providing the needs of the PAK FA, on At least on the test stage. "

The need for this engine is the fifth generation - by weight, dimensions, specific, technical characteristics - will be really about 10 years, experts say. In this sense, while at the Ministry of Defense is, because the need for a capacity of traction and other characteristics of the engine will arise when there are heavier versions of the aircraft - two-seater that is optimized under the shock problem, perhaps by basing on aircraft carriers. And also a version for India, optimized for high-altitude and high temperature conditions.

"In general - continues to Makienko - there is such a pattern: aviation complex in the process of life - he lived from 30 to 50 years - on average heavier by 1% per year. That is, through its life cycle traction necessary to increase by 30-50% . Therefore, increasing the energy capacity of the engine will be relevant not before 2020, when they start to appear heavy-weight version of the aircraft.

Must be why the IAF opted for the Saturn 117S engines (about 14.5 ton thrust each). The 117S is an advanced version of the AL-31F,

The article seems to have been translated from another language.... i could barely understand.
So which engine will Pak Fa use? 117S or a new engine?

New PAK-FA T-50 (SU-50) brief

by Eric Palmer

Stephen Trimble of The Dew Line has found an interesting PAK-FA T-50 (SU-50?) capability brief.
A few important things to take out of this are; they will do up to 2000 flight tests before full rate production and (not mentioned in the brief directly) that as far as low-observability goes, the jet only has to be good enough (nose-on) to reduce the PK (probability of kill) of the AIM-120 AMRAAM. The AMRAAMs best combat PK is around 50 percent vs. aircraft with poor capability and/or poorly maintained, sustained and fielded. The wide variety of proposed sensors will make U.S. stealth aircraft easier to detect.
With the AMRAAM minimised air battles are going to be more of a problem for the U.S.
As for the rest of the brief; we’ll see. Even in its most basic form the aircraft will be a worthy threat.
The brief itself is interesting however as an analytical piece it doesn’t do much. APA has done some work here that should be considered.

PAK FA with 'Brahmos'

The PAK FA chief designer Alexander Davydenko said, that during development work, the fight between T-50 and F-22 was modeled with good outcome for T-50. He also informed that the new avionics, weapon systems are already exist but will appeared latter since the 1st prototype is not ready for actually weapon carrying. The 2015 as the end term for starting serial supply was confirmed too.
Most inportant he said, T-50 will be built together with India 'in parity principle 50 and 50%', and can be equipped with 'Brahmos' missiles. It's first official confirmation about possibility of 'Brahmos' installation on PAK FA/FGFA fighter. However, it's not clear whether these missiles would be installed internally or externally. Anyway, it can be 1-2 missiles only due to heavy weight of 'Brahmos' supersonic missile.

He also denied any negotiations with Chinese about PAK FA.
Early, the Sukhoi chief Pogosyan informed that KNAAPO modernizes its manufacturing capabilities for T-50 production. He confirmed too that the only partner on PAK FA program is India. Other countries can only purchase the export version of T-50, which will be built together by Russia and India. The T-50 variant for IAF can be almost similar to the Russian one but built in India, he said. He also confirm that Indian side will take as 50% of all program work despite the fact that now 'Russia is well ahead' in this program. The first prototype will be transferred to Zhukovsky. All testing program includes as 2000 flying till 2015. A number of prototypes will take participation in it.

Other Indo-Russian program is successfully follow too: the Indian sources in Moscow confirmed negotiations for more 42 Su-30MKI purchase.

Premier Putin satisfied with Russian fifth-generation fighter tests

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he was satisfied with the tests of a Russian fifth-generation fighter jet.

"Flight tests of the fifth-generation fighter are continuing successfully," Putin said.

"Once again I want to thank everyone who worked on this machine, as well as those who are now putting it in the air," the premier continued.

The first Russian fifth-generation fighter jet was delivered to Zhukovsky in the Moscow Region for a flight test on April 8.

The fighter performed its maiden flight on January 29, when the jet spent 47 minutes in the air.

The Sukhoi design bureau started project development of the aircraft after it received the tender in April 2002. Last summer, the fighter's design was approved, and the prototype blueprints were delivered to the KNAAPO aviation construction company based in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The T-50 is the domestic name of the plane which had been developed as the Advanced Front-Line Aviation Complex (PAK FA) for Russia's Air Force. The PAK FA can carry either eight next-generation air-to-air R-77 missiles, or two large controllable anti-ship bombs weighing 1,500 kg each. It can also carry two long-range missiles developed by the Novator Bureau which can hit targets within a 400 kilometer range.

India says to have fifth-generation jets in 2018

NEW DELHI, April 23 (Reuters) - India will introduce an advanced fighter jet it is building with Russia in 2018, a move that will bring sophistication to its air power but could also spark unease among neighbours China and Pakistan.

New Delhi has watched warily as China has made rapid strides in defence, worried that Beijing's long-term strategy for the region could involve encircling India. Indian military commanders have stressed greater firepower as a counter-measure, particularly for the air force. The fifth generation fighter aircraft joint project with Russia is part of that strategy.

"The fifth generation aircraft would possess technologies which would provide it (India) the edge over adversaries in future air warfare," P.V. Naik, the Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), said in a written statement sent to Reuters.

"China is rapidly modernising its air force ... On our part, the IAF is reviewing its tactics regularly to increase its combat potential," Naik said.

India's plans to bolster its air force include upgrading more than 50 airbases along the Chinese and Pakistan border, he said.

Traditionally, any move by India to acquire new weaponry has been met with similar moves by Pakistan, putting already fragile regional security under further strain.

The fifth-generation fighters, billed as a competitor to the U.S. F-22 Raptor, can fool sophisticated radars and will be able to take off from short airstrips and remain in the air for longer than the current fighters, air force officials say.

India's air force says it has more than 800 active combat aircraft but is dwarfed by China's, which has more than 2,000 fighter aircraft.

Arms procurement is a painfully slow process in India because of red tape and charges of corruption in winning tenders.

India plans to procure at least 200 of the fifth-generation fighters, each valued at $100 million, in a deal which analysts say is watched with unease by neighbours Pakistan and China.

India is looking to spend more than $50 billion over the next five years to modernise its largely Soviet-era weapons systems.

The governments of Russia and India have already signed the deal for the advanced jet, although the two companies that will build them have not. Officials say that is just a formality and will be completed this year.

Production of the stealth jet fighter is a 50-50 joint venture between Russia and India's state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will build a mission computer, cockpit displays and other navigation systems.

India is also buying 126 multi-role fighters and will pare down the number of bidders for the $11 billion deal by June or July, Naik said . That contract is one of the world's biggest arms deals.

Russian firms competing for FGFA engine development contract

An artist's rendition of a fifth generation fighter aircraft.

Three Russian firms are in race to develop advanced engine for the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) to be jointly produced by India and Russia.

The 'block 2' engine would be developed in five-six years and the preliminary R&D is being carried out by Moscow-based NPO Saturn, Salyut and St Petersburg-based Klimov Plant, specialising on the fighter aircraft engines.

"The winner of the tender will have to provide the engine for 'putting under the wing' after 5-6 years," Managing Director of NPO Saturn Ilya Fyodorov was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.

The twin-stick two seater version of the futuristic multi-role fighter jet for the Indian Air Force (IAF) would be developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and 'Sukhoi' Corporation, which is part of the Russian integrated aircraft manufacturer UAC on the parity basis.

The T-50 technology demonstrator developed by Sukhoi Corporation made its maiden flight on January 29 and the standard flight tests programme of its three prototypes lasting couple of years are underway.

Six test flights have been made so far and would take about 2 thousand trial flights before commissioning the much awaited fighter to match US F-22 Raptor and its lighter export version F-35, Sukhoi said.

Although the airframe of the fighter would be of the Russian design, it would be further developed with the contribution of Indian experts and engineers, who would provide composite materials for the hull and 'artificial intellect' for the FGFA.

According to sources, Russia would begin the induction of single seater fighter beginning from 2015, while the twin seater jet designed exclusively for the IAF is expected to be inducted from 2017 onwards.

The cost of the project would be around USD 8-10 billion and would be shared by India and Russia on parity basis, according to the reports.

The aircraft would carry a price tag of USD 85-100 million and would be available in the global market after India and Russia meet their initial requirements.

5th generation jet-fighter does first test flight in Zhukovsky

5th generation jet-fighter does first test flight in Zhukovsky. The main stage of test flights of a prospective frontline aviation complex (PAK FA), the so-called 5th generation jet fighter, has started in Zhukovsky near Moscow. The plane stayed in the air for 40 minutes. Experienced pilot Sergey Bogdan was at the wheel, Interfax informs. Compared with previous generations of jet-fighters, PAK FA has a number of unique features combining ram and fighter plane functions. Besides, composite materials and innovative technologies used in its production make it practically invisible to radars.

T-50 flies again

The fifth-generation PAK FA T-50 fighter jet continued its test flights near Moscow on Thursday.

The plane, developed by Sukhoi, is intended to match the American F-22 Raptor, and the manufacturers say it boasts a number of unique capabilities.

It is equipped with a largely new set of avionics that integrates an "electronic pilot" function, reducing the pressure on the pilot and allows him to concentrate on tactical tasks, the company said in a press release.

The plane's on-board equipment enables it to conduct data exchange in real time both with ground control and the airborne colleagues. The use of compound materials and innovative technologies, the aerodynamic composition of the plane and measures to lower the engine signature provide a uniquely low level of radiolocation, optical and infrared visibility. All of this significantly increases the fight efficiency both on air and ground targets in any time of day and any weather, the manufacturers add.

Thursday's test, from the Zhukovsky airfield in Moscow region, was piloted by experienced test pilot Sergei Bogdan. It marks the start of the main testing cycle, after preliminary flight tests were carried out in Komsomolsk-na-Amur in January, RIA Novosti reported.

The Russian Air Force is expected to invest in a fleet of T-50s in 2015 once testing is complete, and the new planes are expected to form the basis of its strength for the next few decades.
