New Russian fighter to make 2,000 flights before production starts

Russia's fifth-generation jet fighter, the T-50, is to undergo more than 2,000 flight tests before full-scale production starts, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday.
"Before the jet goes into production, it should complete over 2,000 test flights," Putin said.
He also said now that Russia had a fifth-generation prototype fighter, it should start working on a new-generation long-range strategic bomber that he described as "an airborne missile-carrier."
A source at the Sukhoi aircraft maker said earlier in the day the T-50 would start on a standard flight test program in April, adding it would take "several years" to complete the testing program.
A prototype of the fighter made a 47-minute maiden flight in Russia's Far East on January 29.
Russia has been developing its newest fighter since the 1990s. The current prototype was designed by the Sukhoi design bureau and built at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East.
It will be delivered to the Russian Air Force from 2015 onwards.
Russian officials have already hailed the fighter as "a unique warplane" that combines the capabilities of an air superiority fighter and attack aircraft.
The Tupolev aircraft maker said last year that a new-generation strategic bomber would be developed by 2017, while production should start in 2020 to 2025.
However, Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev, commander of Russia's strategic aviation said a new strategic bomber, which would use stealth technology, was expected to enter service in 2025-2030.
The new bomber will replace three aircraft currently in service with Russia's strategic aviation, the Tu-95MC Bear and Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers, introduced in 1956 and 1980, respectively, and Tu-22M3 Backfire long-range bombers, which first flew in 1972.

PAK FA from technological POV

An interesting video about T-50 program was published by Russian 'Roscosmos TV'. The follow text is my translation to English:

Short acceleration – 200 m only – and the take-off is done! Other aircrafts can do this only from carriers. However, the Russian 5th gen fighter has a number of features allow it to take-off from a short horizontal airstrip. The 5th gen engine effectively provides it.
Ilia Fedorov, the Supervising Director of NPO 'Saturn', deputy general director of the Russian 'United Engine-building Corporation' (UEBC) tells about the difference of t-50's engine:
- "It has different thrust, naturally different tuning control. The number of constructive differences allow better thrust with lower fuel consumption. And the most important – it has totally different system of control".

The new engine of NPO 'Saturn' for PAK FA is the evolution of an engine family marked by the index '117'. Its tests on 'Saturn's facility in Rybinsk can be seen on this video. It proved its characteristics on the 1st PAK FA prototype: the taking-off is very steep on the video.

Sergey Chemezov, the Director General of 'Rostechnology' state corporation (NPO 'Saturn' owner) says:
- "The engine allows long time supersonic fly without the afterburner. The thrust-vectoring is provided for better maneuverability".

The engine is the heart of a fighter, but the radar is its eyes and ears. And the navigation system is like a 'vestibular system'. All these indispensible features of 5th generation were developed together with the fighter itself.
Sergey Chemezov, the Director General of 'Rostechnology' state corporation (NPO 'Saturn' owner) says:
- "The sub-units of 'Rostechnology' Corp. are produced engines and different devices for different planes including of course - PAK FA. I think they produce about 70% in this class of parts".
The pilots notice with pride: even the first prototypes have almost serial avionics. They have 5 next years for elimination this 'allmost' by tests.
Boris Obnosov, Director General of 'Tactical Missiles Weapon' Corp., says:
- "The intensity of the tests had no examples even in USSR era. It due to the big numbers of devices (missiles) and shorten terms of development. As it was already declared by RuAF Commander General we are responsible to provide this plane as a weapon system".
It's not kind of 'demonstration aircraft' for an air-show, but the formidable universal weapon system: air-to-air, air-to-ground, short, medium and long range. R-73 – is the smallest but formidable air-to-air missiles. It's in modernization. It's a 'digital' missile like all T-50's weapon systems.
Boris Obnosov, Director General of 'Tactical Missiles Weapon' Corp., says:
- "The obligate condition for 5th gen fighters like F-22 and PAK FA as well is intra-fuselage placement of missiles. It's provided for RCS reduction".
The American F-22 'Raptor' was considered invincible till T-50 appearance. F-22's constructive 'ideology' is stealthiness against ground-based radars. The 'Sukhoi's fighter 'ideology': to spot 'Raptor' early and to overwhelm it in the short range fighting. In fighting stealth vs. stealth the better radar will decide the winner.
Vladimir Zagorodny, Constructor General, the department Chief in NIIP 'Tikhomirov' says:
- "We will be able to counter these stealth fighters and even win them in some duel situations".
Vladimir Zagorodny shows his team 'baby': the radar for the new fighter. Due to secrecy the door here is usually closed for press, but they did exception for us. The AESA has more then 1500 MMICs. This radar is named AFAR in Russian: the active phased antenna array. Five AESA radars over all airframe will detect the targets in any direction.
Vladimir Zagorodny, Constructor General, the department Chief in NIIP 'Tikhomirov' says:
- "I didn’t see such technology in 'Raptor' or F-35".

All T-50's electronics is netted in a unified intellectual complex, able to prompt pilot what to do in the fly. Indeed, the 5th gen fighter – is sometimes called 'flying computer'. The part of the pilot work will be done by the computer.
Andrey Tyulin, Director General of 'Aviapriborostroyenie' concern, says:
- "The avionics allow high precision flying to the needed point, successful using high precision weapon, and aircraft precise positioning in the air space".

Stealth technology means less IR emission and less metal in the airframe. Then, the engine blades must be hidden and the composites must be used broader.
Nikolay Vymornov, the Chief Technologist of NPK 'Composite' says:
- "In F-22 and F-35 the use of composites in airframe is not less, then 40%. We are sure, in our PAK FA fighter the use of composites will not fall of this number".
The new carbon-plastic composite was already developed specially for 5th gen fighters. The metal details are made with new technologies too. The plane will fly on critical and even super-critical fly regimes. So the special requirements for the materials are needed. It's OK now in Russia: our country is the biggest titan consructions supplier.
Sergey Chemezov, the Director General of 'Rostechnology' state corporation (NPO 'Saturn' owner) says:
- "The titan alloys (of T-50) are manufactured in VSMPO 'Avisma' – the world biggest titan alloys and titan products manufacturer".
The first flying prototype – is only a subject for testing. When T-50 appears in RuAF colors it probably will look rather different. However, the work done is not done in vain.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's fifth-generation stealth jet fighter will be ready for use in 2015, its designer said on Monday, as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin pressed the aviation industry to design a new strategic bomber.

Moscow is scrambling to update its ageing fleet of military aircraft. It test-flew a long-awaited stealth fighter at the end of January, presenting it as Moscow's first all-new warplane since the 1991 Soviet collapse and a challenge to the technological supremacy of its Cold War foe the United States.

Asked to compare his brainchild to the U.S. F-22 Raptor, built more than a decade ago, the Russian jet's chief designer Alexander Davydenko told reporters: "The basic features are the same but we tried to do it better."

He said Sukhoi, which produced the T-50 prototype of the jet, had simulated duels with the U.S. stealth fighter.

"I think we will have a competitive price. As for the efficiency-and-cost ratio, we will be much better," Davydenko said.

The first MiG-29 and Su-27 prototypes of the previous fourth generation took to the air in 1977. Analysts say several nations, including Libya and Vietnam, had expressed interest in the fifth-generation fighter.

Putin, who toured Sukhoi's design bureau in Moscow on Monday, said Russia still had much work to do before it starts producing the plane.

"Before this machine can go into serial production, there are over 2,000 test flights left. There is still a lot of work ahead," he told a government meeting on the aviation industry.

PUTIN WANTS NEW BOMBER

Putin also urged the industry to begin designing a new bomber.

"We should not confine ourselves to developing just one new model. After the fifth-generation fighter jet, we must think and get down to work on a next-generation, long-range aviation complex -- our new strategic missile carrier," Putin said.

Russia has a large fleet of Soviet-era Tu-95MS turbo-prop strategic bombers codenamed "Bears" by NATO. It has a much smaller number of more modern, supersonic Tu-160 "Blackjack" jet bombers, the world's biggest warplanes ever built.

Sukhoi CEO Mikhail Pogosyan said he saw his company's market share growing from 13 percent of the estimated global $200 billion market in 2006-15 to 15-16 percent of the $300 billion market in 2016-25.

He said three more experimental fighters would be built by the start of next year. Davydenko said 2015 was the deadline for delivering the plane to the armed forces.

Analysts from the Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) said in a survey published last week that the T-50 prototype's engines did not measure up to new-generation fighters in terms of thrust-to-weight ratio and fuel economy.

The T-50 will also be produced in a 50/50 joint venture with India and could be armed with jointly made BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Davydenko said.

Moscow: Russia's fifth generation all composite stealth fighter aircraft, in which India has a stake, would undergo over 2,000 test flights before its serial production commences, prime minister Vladimir Putin has said. "Before the jet goes into production, it should complete over 2,000 test flights," Putin was quoted as saying by agencies at a meeting last night with the defence industry officials.

The T-50 technology demonstrator developed by Sukhoi Corporation would be Russia's answer to America's F-22 Raptor and J-35 fighters and is expected to be the next generation fighters for both India and Russia.

The T-50 made its maiden flight on January 29 and the standard flight tests programme of its three prototypes lasting couple of years would begin in April.

The Russians are keeping a veil of secrecy on the new fighter and have said that it would not take part in this year's Faranborough air show in UK. In his upcoming talks in New Delhi on March 12, Putin is expected to give a new fillip to the FGFA programme in which India's Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and the fighters division of Russia's United AircraftCorporation (UAC) are 50-50 partners.

Although the airframe of the fighter would be of the Russian design it would be further developed with the contribution of Indian experts and engineers, who would provide composite materials for the hull and 'artificial intellect' for the FGFA.

According to sources Russia would begin the induction of single seater fighter beginning from 2015, while the twin seater jet designed exclusively for the IAF is expected to be inducted from 2017 onwards.

In the Experimental Design Bureau Sukhoi, which is the creation of fifth generation fighter aircraft, Vladimir Putin showed the work of a special stand, which checked the aircraft drive systems and control fighting machine. Compared with previous generations of fighter aircraft, the new machine has several unique features, combining the functions of attack aircraft and fighter. First flight of the fifth generation on January 29, 2010 in Komsomolsk-on-a Moor - a prototype machine has 47 minutes in the air and landed on the runway of the factory airfield. Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister: "I am convinced that the domestic aviation industry has every opportunity to comply with all of the plans. And the technology and staffing, and organizational. Podverzhdenie to - the recent successful flights of the fifth generation fighter. I hope that all these rates will be maintained . Of course, we do not restrict the development of only one new model. Following the fifth-generation fighter, we should consider and begin work on promising aviation complex long-range aviation in our new SSBNs "

Today in the design bureau Sukhoi showed how experienced fifth-generation fighter T-50, which should be entered service after five years. Vladimir Putin, who led a OKB meeting the defense industry, said that in time no doubt. He also set a task after the T-50 to begin to develop long-range strategic missile carrier aircraft. Details - from NTV correspondent Sergei Morozov. Today, Vladimir Putin visited the OKB Sukhoi, where he demonstrated a virtual test of the latest fifth-generation fighter T-450. Virtual testing can simulate the situation encountered in flight, directly to the shop. Vladimir Putin met with a test pilot, who raised three times the T-50 in the air for real. Prime Minister noted that such flights will have to spend at least 2 thousand before the machine will be ready. Nevertheless, according to Vladimir Putin, now we can say that this aircraft has no analogues in the world and he has good prospects. At the meeting, which was held today in the OKB Sukhoi, Prime announced halving the list of Russian military strategic enterprises - at 240 units. According to the head of the Government, it will create additional opportunities to attract investors in those companies, which will be excluded from the list. Despite the reorganization, according to the prime minister, in the coming years, Russia's army should be extended with the latest models of military equipment. Vladimir Putin, Chairman of RF Government: "As part of the state program of armaments for the next 10 years in the army should be placed over one thousand five hundred new planes and helicopters and about 200 anti-aircraft missile systems. As a result, the share of modern military aircraft should be at least 80 percent, and air defense systems - not less than 75 percent. This will in times to increase combat capability of our armed forces. Also, Vladimir Putin said today that he intends to discuss with the aircraft builders a new engine for the aircraft T-50, and this is one of the most important components of the new generation aircraft

Russia, India to develop joint 5G-fighter by 2016

A Russian-Indian fifth-generation fighter jet could be developed by 2015-2016, a Russian defense industry official said on Tuesday.

Moscow and New Delhi are expected to sign a contract on a joint development of the new fighter in the near future, focusing on the design concept and technical requirements put forward by India.

"I hope that we will be able to build a joint fifth-generation aircraft in the next five to six years. It is a time-consuming and complex project," said Alexander Fomin, first deputy head of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation.

The new aircraft will be most likely based on Russia's T-50 prototype fifth-generation fighter, which has already made two test flights and is expected to join the Russian Air Force in 2015.

India's Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) was reported to be seeking a 25% share in design and development in the project.

Fomin said the fighter for the Indian Air Force could incorporate several integrated on-board systems developed by third parties.

"The integration is good because we will not have to invent a bicycle and can use the things that our neighbors already have, but it is also a difficult task because we will have to combine all the elements in a unified system," the official said.

The new fighter for the Indian Air Force is expected to feature a two-seat cockpit, advanced electronics and could be armed with BrahMos supersonic missiles.

Russia has been developing its fifth-generation fighter since the 1990s. The current prototype, known as the T-50, was designed by the Sukhoi design bureau and built at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East.

Russian officials have already hailed the fighter as "a unique warplane" that combines the capabilities of an air superiority fighter and attack aircraft.

Russia not to exhibit T-50 jet fighter at Farnborough Air Show

Russia will not be exhibiting its fifth-generation jet fighter, the T-50, at the Farnborough International Air Show in southern England this summer, the head of the Sukhoi aircraft maker said.

A prototype of the fighter made a 47-minute maiden flight in Russia's Far East on January 29.

Mikhail Pogosyan said that by the end of the year, three more fifth-generation jet fighters will begin test flights in Russia.

"By the end of 2010 or in early 2011, we must add to test flights three more jets," he said after his meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

A source at the Sukhoi aircraft maker said on Monday the T-50 would start on a standard flight test program in April, adding it would take "several years" to complete the testing program.

Russia has been developing its newest fighter since the 1990s. The current prototype was designed by the Sukhoi design bureau and built at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East. It will be delivered to the Russian Air Force from 2015 onwards.

PAK FA major trials to begin in April

MOSCOW (BNS): The major flight trials of Russia's fifth generation fighter aircraft will begin in April, 2010, at Gromov R&D Institute, in Zhukovsky.

According to a report by RIA Novosti, the statement was conveyed on Monday by the sources from Sukhoi Company.

In Feb, 2010 the fifth generation fighter aircraft made its first test flight in Komsomolsk-na-Amure.

"Before it passes to the serial production stage, the aircraft should make about 2000 flights. Judging by the way the work is organised (as per PAK FA) we have no doubts that we will succeed in it and our armed force will get the aircraft in due time," said Vladimir Putin at a meeting in the Sukhoi Company.

Earlier Air Force Chief Colonel General Alexander Zelin said that induction of the aircraft will start in 2015.

T-50 PAK FA has a take-off weight exceeding 30 tons. It has widely spread engines and two fins, Its exteriors are designed with the utilisation of stealth technologies.

The aircraft is equipped with the latest avionics, implementing functions of electronic 'autopilot' and state-of-the-art radar with a phase-locked antenna array. It also has the in-flight fuelling capabilities.

Sukhoi reveals T-50 cockpit layout and (maybe) static airframe

By Stephen Trimble on March 2, 2010 8:25 PM

Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit yesterday at Sukhoi's offices has yielded some excellent footage of the T-50 cockpit and what appears to be a static airframe.

All photos and videos were posted earlier today at DefenceNet, a Russian-language web site. By the way, if you can read Cyrillic, please help me translate.

The cockpit shows two side-by-side, roughly 15-in multi-function displays with a massive head-up display.

Pogosyan: The 2nd stage engine for PK FA will be ready after 2015
Russian 'United Airbuilding Corporation' (UAC) will be the system integrator of 2nd stage engine for 5th gen fighter,- said today Mikhail Pogosyan, the Sukhoi corp chief.

According to ARMS-TASS, he also have said, that the 'United Engine-building Corporation' will merge 'Salut' corp - second prominent center of gas-turbine manufacturing and design in Russia. 'The specification of the prospective engine is decided, but the whole time of development will take 10-12 years, so this engine will not be ready in 2015 for sure'? - he said.

He also marked that there is nothing critical with the fact that the tests of PAK FA have started with 1st stage engine. 'THe plane took-off with the engine, which was projected for this fighter, 'it's very modern device, allowing long term exploitation of the plane'. The plane will start its service in RuAF with the 1st phase engine.

As regards 2nd phase engine, the terms of the program need elaboration, it will be decided during 2010 - 2011 maximum , he added. During Putin visit to 'Sukhoi' facility in Moscow Pogosyan also declared that 27 degree AoA was achieved throughout last PAK FA testing. 'When Su-27 was tested, such AoA was achieved only after some months of active testing' he added.
