Sri lanka was never a Indian territory. There was cultural connections for sure & it was more like a vassal state for most parts during Mauryan rule & were on friendly terms. Barring Chola occupation period. And even they were kicked out eventually.
However Sinhalese people are descendants of Orissa & Bengal regions I guess. So I some way we are all same like rest of the subcontinent.

India should realise that, no amount of aid will purchase a relationship that excludes China. The 'island nation' has already approached IMF for a bailout, which will involve certain amount of cuts to Rajapaksha's populist schemes.
