Indian delegation that went to Russia wanted AK103. It was the Russians in Kalashnikov's factory that convinced us to go for ak203. Tthe Indian side agreed since they thought 203> 103, so it must be better.

What happened next, was a cost cutting exercise which basically watered down the 203 to 103 variant.

What is the difference between 103 and 203?
203 has a foldable and adjustable buttstock, a finger tab on fire selector, railes on dust cover, upper handguard and lower handguard, an ergonomic pistol grip and rails on 2 and 6 o’ clock on the hand guard.

Great at least someone said.
I'm pretty sure Indian side saw it and said no we don't want anything fancy gives us the cheapest one.
May be they are right also, for para military who are most of the time involved in policing duties why get all the bells and whistles. In any case, if SF or other elite units want the ak203 they can upgrade it with fab solutions.

Those kits are very expensive. AK-203 is a great gun only if they buy it, AK-103 is not good for today’s warfare as AK-203 is overall far better because of adjustable stock.

The FAB defence kits are pretty costly too. These kits makes sense only on old AKs which we have in stock.
Newer AKs which practically every Eastern European countries like Bulgaria (Arsenal), Serbia (Zastava) etc. are selling, does have kits included option, which is not much expensive than bare bones version.

Simply put:
Cost of importing AK-203 (barebones AK) from Russia : around Rs. 70K
Cost of local production of AK-203 (barebones AK) in OFB Amethi : add around 6K (minimum) to imported AK-203.

With 70k, we can get any one of the option:
1. One TAR (which is a barebone AK) from OFB Trichy
2. One kitted AK from Arsenal
3. Two barebones AKs from Arsenal/Zastava
3. Accesories for kitting two old AKs in our stock from FAB Defence.

But you are supposedly creating a domestic assembly line with full ToT and able to meet local demand if a war flare up. The additional cost is not the issue, the real thing is whether Amethi factory will be able to assimilate the tech (if Russia provide) and build quality AK 203.
With mass production, the average unit cost should decline. Efficiency of Amethi factory will be crucial in that equation. However, any move from INSAS is good move. At least infantry is getting something
