All I could get is this news report. Not sure whether Izhmash eventually gave/sold the license to India. There was a report that India was going for license production of AK-103 any idea what happened??
I'll let army experts answer the main question you asked, because I am a civvie and do not know exactly why they were not employed en masse, but allow me to add that the FN-FAL, which is a very good support weapon with full auto capability in some versions, are quite different from the RFI (w.r.t. the internal mechanisms and measurements) made FN-FAL clones. Also, I believe India already had the setup for the Bren 7.62 mm NATO, plus India was issuing 7.62 mm NATO SMLE rifles (commonly and wrongly called .303 rifles) for second layer defense, such as, civil defense, militia etc..even though FNFAL 1C was with indian army why it was seen less action and it could be used as a good support weapon like rpk ?i had only seen them with para sf during Srilankan ops and it is heard that it is now used in BMPs .....why army didnt employ it in mass ?
Actually both 5.45 & 5.56 are spire point bullet and have almost same ballistics, range and weight, SS109 ( Indian Army ) is improved 5.56mm meant for extended range with more energy and velocity which enable the bullet to shred BP jackets also it have a steel core, Though both rounds gives the terrible pain and fatal wounds, When the bullet impacts at high velocity and yaws in tissue, fragmentation creates a rapid transfer of energy which can result in massive wounding but relatively low hydrostatic shock effects, which enable these tangos to keep fighting on, until someone shoot him on head or chest.much had been heard about comparison btw 7.62mm & 5.56*45 mm ammo....But what about the 5.45*39 mm russian standard issue?is it better than nato round?pleas give the details...
Saw this report long back but nothing has been heard since then!!Also the interesting part is that it will be a private arms manufacturer. All I could get is this news report. Not sure whether Izhmash eventually gave/sold the license to India.
Latest Kalashnikovs to be made in India
Pradeep Thakur, TNN, Feb 19, 2008; Times of India
NEW DELHI: With the 61st anniversary of the famed Kalashnikov AK-47 series around the corner, the Russian manufacturer of the world's best-known assault rifle announced that the latest AK-100 series will be manufactured in India.
The Russian arms company, Izhmash, will shortly issue a licence to an Indian private arms manufacturer with whom negotiations are at an advanced stage. Company spokesperson Alexander Xavarzin said assembling of the AK-103 will begin in a year's time and full-scale manufacturing would start once the technology transfer takes place.
The company hopes to sell the gun to various police and paramilitary forces in the country as well as the army. It will not be exported.
The popularity of the assault rifle can be gauged from the fact that originals account for only 8-12% of the total world sales of the Kalashnikov series - the rest are all Kalashnikov clones being manufactured in several countries, according to the Izhmash spokesperson.
Unlike the AK-47 rifle which has a wooden base, the new generation AK-100 series is much lighter and has a body made of plastic. Xavarzin said the plastic component makes it an all-weather rifle, well suited to Indian conditions where soldiers have to trek at high altitudes for a number of days at a stretch.

Yes....kunal sir, this pic
wont it be problem using INSAS reflex sight with that pressure switch for turning on laser ???
GoI has been rather uncomfortable with the idea of private companies manufacturing small arms and assault rifles. There is a fear that they might channel some of these arms to those who can pay the right amount of money; which, indeed is a legitimate concern. With this in mind, and given that we have not heard any news on private small arms manufacturing, I am inclined to believe that the Izhmash-deal never really went through.Saw this report long back but nothing has been heard since then!!Also the interesting part is that it will be a private arms manufacturer.
