Pakistani Militants Hold Army Troops Hostage

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Sept. 3 — Close to 300 Pakistani soldiers and officers have been held captive for four days after they were seized by pro-Taliban militants in a tribal region near the Afghan border without a shot being fired, government officials said Monday.

It was the first time government officials acknowledged that so many men had been captured and that they were being held hostage. The government has asked tribal elders to intercede to seek the release of the soldiers, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the embarrassment the capture has caused the government.

The militants have demanded that the military withdraw from the restive area of South Waziristan and release 15 of their men from government custody.

The capture of the soldiers on Thursday was a serious setback for the Pakistani military in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. It demonstrated the confidence of the militants in South Waziristan, one of seven Pakistani tribal regions that has been described as a virtual Taliban state, where the government has so little control that the military can move only with the consent of the local militants.

It's not about Zardari. It's about how Imran's govt is using institutions for their political agenda while failing in every aspect of governance. No one trust NAB, PEMRA and FBR there. First they put Nawaz and now Asif without any concrete evidence. The call against corruption has gone cold. Plus the basic commodities has gone sky high. In this situation, if Bilawal wants he can launch a movement in Karachi against Islamabad. But they are waiting for the budget because as you said, no one will come out for Zardari, but they'll rally against inflation.

I don't think the West and it's allies would let Pak to be economically stable again. Nobody wants that and nobody will help them

KSA will claim those warheads if Pak goes towards that path. After Pulwama, there were rumours that some warheads were sent to KSA for protection. KSA funded their nuke program so basically the warheads are their asset too.

And destruction?

it's not possible to destroy all of their warhead storage facilities. Even if you did, what about the ones which are already deployed ? You can launch a preemptive strike on their launch sites, storage facilities, Nuclear research sites, every launch platforms and destroy their ability to produce anymore launch vehicles but still they'll manage to launch atleast one missile towards us and that's not a desirable outcome for us. The best bet is to call their nuclear bluff like we did in Balakot, widen the nuclear threshold and make their assets somewhat useless. At the same time, a we must build a strong AD and BMD network and standoff strike capability to further strengthen our position.
