Russia, Greece to hold joint naval drills
Navy News — By RIA Novosti on March 31, 2010 at 5:14 am

The Russian and Greek navies will conduct joint exercises in 2010 as part of a bilateral military cooperation action plan, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
Anatoly Serdyukov met on Tuesday his Greek counterpart Evangelos Venezelos in Moscow to discuss bilateral military ties and a Russian initiative to sign a new European security treaty.
"15 events are planned for 2010 for the Russian and Greek servicemen, including exchanges, reciprocal visits of the countries' warships and joint naval drills," spokeswoman for the Russian defense minister Irina Kovalchuk told reporters.
Military-technical cooperation between Russia and Greece began in 1993 and the countries signed an intergovernmental agreement that is currently in force two years later. In the 1990s, Greece acquired over $1 billion worth of Russian weapons.
Russian TOR-M1 air defense systems, Kornet and Fagot antitank weapons, as well as air cushion landing craft Zubr are in service with the Greek Armed Forces.
"Our relations in the sphere of military-technological cooperation are very constructive. And they play an important role both in the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Greece and in the development of Russia-EU relations in general," the Greek defense minister said.

Russia praises ratification of Crimean naval base deal

Moscow hailed the ratification of a deal to extend the lease on a Russian naval base in Crimea, which took place on Tuesday amid clashes and brawls, both outside and inside the Ukrainian parliament.
Neither eggs thrown at the Supreme Rada speaker during the heated debate, nor the crowds of opposition supporters who gathered in front of the parliament building protesting against the deal prevented a majority of lawmakers in the 450-seat parliament from ratifying the groundbreaking agreement.
The pact allows the Russian base to remain in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol for 25 years after the current lease expires in 2017 and stipulates that the lease may be further extended by another five years. In return, Ukraine will receive a 30% discount on Russian natural gas.
Half an hour after Ukraine's Supreme Rada passed the bill, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament also ratified the agreement.
RUSSIA, UKRAINE EXCHANGE CONGRATULATIONS
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych congratulated each other on the simultaneous ratification of the deal during a telephone conversation.
Earlier in the day, Medvedev said the ratification indicated "a triumph of reason and strategic interests over short-term emotions." He also said that the $100-million annual rent which Russia would pay is high but not overpriced.
"We hope such relations will continue forever; they are ancestral links. Such friendship should be accompanied by mutual support," Medvedev said.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the ratification proves that Ukraine is ready to reset relations with Russia.
"The things that happened today in Kiev that send at least two signals...firstly, the new Ukrainian authorities are able to build relations with Russia in a new way, and the new Ukrainian authorities are able to consolidate society and the main political powers in the country," Putin said.
Putin also said the developments meant that despite the "hooligan" behavior of the opposition lawmakers during Tuesday's debate the "path to the stabilization of the political situation" had begun.
UKRAINE'S OPPOSITION, GOVERNMENT EXCHANGE THREATS
Former Ukrainian premier Yulia Tymoshenko, whose eponymous party moved into opposition after Yanukovych became president, said that ratification of the deal was "a black page" in the country's history, and called for a popular uprising against the current leadership. She said she would tour Ukraine "to unite people" against the "gang which is now in power."
She said she would also seek early elections to choose a new parliament which would denounce the deal.
Yanukovych's anti-Russian predecessor Viktor Yushchenko accused the present government of "trading sovereignty for gas."
However, the two former allies in the pro-Western 2004 Orange Revolution seem to be reluctant to join forces again.
Oleh Tyahnybok, the leader of Ukraine's nationalist movement Svoboda (Freedom), made a more radical announcement, saying that his movement would kickstart a revolution in Ukraine.
"From now on the new Ukrainian national revolution begins," he said.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov pledged "an adequate and tough" response to those trying to escalate tensions between pro-Russian and pro-Western forces.
"We already said that we can respond to force with force, but will never be the first to use it. If anyone tries to apply the 'language of force,' he will get an adequate and tough response," he said.
PARLIAMENTARY BATTLES
An opposition lawmaker from the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc suffered concussion during a battle between pro-government and opposition lawmakers in the Kiev-based parliament and has been taken to hospital.
Taras Stetskiv from the opposition bloc accused lawmakers from pro-presidential Party of Regions of assaulting his colleague, who, he said, was peacefully standing near his seat carrying a yellow-blue Ukrainian flag as smoke bombs exploded in the chamber.
"[Oles] Doniy has concussion. They [Party of Regions lawmakers] were villainous even in a physical battle - they struck Doniy twice on the back of the head," the lawmaker was quoted by Tymoshenko bloc's press service as saying.
Doniy was not the only lawmaker to receive injuries, he said, adding that some elderly lawmakers had also been assaulted.
Lawmakers of the Party of Regions were forced to protect the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Volodymyr Lytvyn, with umbrellas as opposition MPs threw eggs at the rostrum.
'DOWN WITH YANUKOVYCH', SAY PROTESTERS
About 7,000 protestors and supporters gathered in front of parliament, according to police estimates. Despite numerous clashes with police and pro-presidential forces, no serious injuries were reported.
Members of the nationalist movement Svoboda paralyzed traffic as they marched along Kiev's main street, Khreshchatik, chanting "Down with Yanukovych!" "Hail Ukraine!" and "Death to our enemies!"
Traffic in the city center, which was halted during the rally, has already resumed.
'SEVASTOPOL AND FLEET INDIVISIBLE', SAY SUPPORTERS
The sound of car horns and shouts of "Sevastopol, Crimea, Russia!" and "Sevastopol and the fleet are indivisible" rang through Sevastopol, as the city where Russian Black Sea Fleet's main base is located welcomed the extension of the lease agreement.
Residents gathered on Tuesday afternoon near the monument to Russian Empress Catherine the Great to show their support for Yanukovych.
The crowd marched in the city center, waving Russian tricolors and St. Andrew's flags, the symbol of the Russian Navy.

Black Sea littoral states conclude joint naval drill

A joint naval drill by Black Sea littoral states involving warships and frigates has concluded in the Black Sea.

Warships from Bulgaria, Russia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine took part in the 'Blackseafor' naval drill which began on April 9 and concluded on April 27.

Over 50 drills were conducted during the exercise, including joint operations on tactical maneuvering, combat conduct by surface ships, air defence and anti-terrorist activity, a Black Sea fleet commander was quoted as saying by Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

The main focus was on maintaining stability and peace in the region, further cooperation and strengthening of mutual understanding among the Black Sea countries, Bulgarian Navy Rear Admiral Georgi Motyev said.

The warships that took part in the naval drill included Russia's Caesar Kunikov Ropucha-I class large landing ship, Romania's Macelariu corvette, Turkey's Yildirim frigate, Bulgaria's frigate Verni and Ukraine's command ship Slavutych, the report said.

The Blackseafor – Black Sea Naval Co-operation Task Group – was formed in 2001 under the leadership of Turkey. Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia and Georgia are its other members.

This year's drill was commanded under the Bulgarian Navy.

French warship visits Russia for Victory Day celebrations

A French missile frigate has arrived in the port of Severomorsk in northern Russia to take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe during World War II.

Latouche-Treville, a Georges Leygues class frigate, will also visit the nearby port of Murmansk and join the warships from Russia's Northern Fleet in a naval parade on May 9.

The agenda of the visit includes an extensive cultural program and meetings with Russian naval personnel and local residents.

Commander of Russia's Northern Fleet, Vice Admiral Nikolai Maksimov, will visit the French frigate on May 8.

Russia and France have expanded their naval ties recently.

Russia is negotiating the purchase of a Mistral-class ship from France, worth 400-500 million euros (around $540-$675 million). Russia could also use French technology later to build another three such vessels in Russia in partnership with the French naval shipbuilder DCNS.

Another French frigate, the Chevalier Paul, participated in joint naval exercises with Northern Fleet's warships in April.

Russia set to keep Typhoon class nuclear subs until 2019 - Navy

Russia's Typhoon class strategic nuclear-powered submarines will remain in service with the Navy until 2019, the Navy commander said on Friday.

The world's largest Typhoon class submarines entered service with the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. Three of the six vessels built are still in use.

"They [the Typhoon class subs] will remain in operation until 2019. They have good modernization potential," Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky said.

The Dmitry Donskoy submarine has been modernized as a test platform for Russia's new Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile.

Two reserve vessels, the Arkhangelsk and the Severstal, are awaiting overhaul at a naval base in Severodvinsk in northern Russia. They will most likely be modernized to carry new-generation sea-based cruise missiles to match the U.S. Ohio-class submarines.

The Typhoon class subs have a maximum displacement of 33,800 tons and were built to carry 20 SS-N-20 Sturgeon solid-propellant SLBMs, all of which have been retired.

The Typhoons will be replaced in the future with the new Borey class strategic nuclear-powered submarines, which will be equipped with Bulava missiles.

2010 Moscow Victory Day Parade

The Moscow Victory Day Parade of 2010 was held on 9 May 2010 to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the capitulation of Germany in 1945. The parade marks the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The 2010 parade was the largest parade held in Moscow since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, and saw 11,135 troops, 127 aircraft and helicopters, and the new Topol-M mobile ICBM missile, taking part. For the first time, the 2010 parade also includes military units from foreign countries who were allied with the Soviet Union during World War II, with representation from France, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
