*relatively competent compared to Russia, China and India too.
NATO soldiers are better trained, train for longer, and better equipped than Indian, Russian or Chinese soldiers. US is a lot better at executing individual military missions. But, whether, NATO can translate the same to victory in the war, is highly debatable..

You gotta be kidding me. Look at the poor readiness of Germany military. Check out the reports of 80% of war equipment not usable and 40% of Germany units not fit for combat service. You will see the same as for other NATO countries. With the exception of US and maybe Britain, all other NATO countries have training issues, readiness issues.

The Indian Army may have equipment issues but I do not doubt their readiness or training competency. They can stand up toe to toe with any NATO combat unit.

Hearing some news of Russians finally planning to mobilize around 300,000 troops. Can anybody fill me in on the details please? Is this actually happening or a rumour?

How can there be equipment issues and training competency at the same time?

You are kidding me right? Even if you don't have the latest equipment, you can still train with the weapon you have. You can still do maneuvers, practice fire drills, communication drills, and tactical exercises.

Yes, VVP and Shoigu announced it and its signed into an order. What that means is not clear, whether they will stabilize the 4 oblasts and the contract soldiers go on offence and if so in which direction? They seem to hit more bigger targets like dams, power plants pointing to more aggressive use of airforce. With increase in numbers, there will probably be more killed too....hope it gets escalated with NATO and ends in shooting war. World needs a reset for sure...forest needs to burn to regenerate

What makes nation a nation? Is it in genes? Certainly not. Hungarians are very proud of their heritage, yet they have almost nothing in common with old Magyar tribes, which imposed their language on them and then went extinct. Is it language? Irishmen are a very proud nation, yet they abandoned Old Gaelig long ago and speak the language of their long-time occupier.

So I guess a nation emerges when we have sufficient number of people who have a feeling of shared identity. Like in this case, where we have tens of millions of people, speaking both Ukrainian and Russian, who think they are not Russians, but Ukrainians. And are willing to sacrifice their lives for it in a battle with an aggressor who wants to erase them from a map, because this is their Great Patriotic War and they have to prove their right to exist as a nation, like their forefathers did 70 years ago. Now there will be a mobilization in Russia so we will soon see how many people from Moscow and Piter are willing to sacrifice their sons just to fulfill lunatic dreams of a certain Kremlin midget who dreams to enter school books as the next Peter the Great. Really curious about it :)
Yes, you are right. Any people is proud of its identity, its land.
The problem arises when the identity and feature is fake, invented. Ukraine is not uniform in ethnic and linguistic terms. Most of the territory was simply given to it. As a nation it is too young.
And there would be no problem if the Ukrainians would not build their nation at the expense of the Russians, humiliating the Russians, on the lands donated by Russia and to the detriment of Russia's security, becoming a tool in the hands of Russia's enemies. They were given a lot of time to change their minds and develop as a normal state. Now Russia's patience is over.

Ukraine will never stop fighting until it keeps receiving Western weapons.. And the good thing for Ukraine is, US can't stop supplying weapons after Russian referendums, since that would mean US /NATO agreeing with territorial expansion in Europe via occupation -- > Referendum --> Annexation route.. The core of thr countries supporting Ukrainw viz. BALTICS, Poland, US, UK won't be deterred from arming Ukraine.
And the bad news for the Ukrainians is that by getting weapons, they will be an even greater threat to the Russians and Russia. And they will continue to die in large numbers. The Russians will also die, but much less. But there are more Russians and Russia is more powerful. Let's see who finishes the fastest.
Add to this an increasingly impoverished Europe, and naturally its support will weaken over time.

That may be true from a perspective of a Russian, but looking from the outside, one might also say that

- Ukraine did mind its own, it never raised any territorial demands against Russia
- in 1994, according to Budapest Memorandum, it got rid of nuclear weapons stationed on its territory and in exchange, Russia woved to respect it territorial integrity (and while watching what is happening today, I think the message sent to the rest of the world is obvious)
- then, after a coup, Russia occupied and annexed Crimea (ok, this was somewhat acceptable)
- then it initiated and financed civil war in the Ukraine, first through volunteers, and when they saw it was not enough, did direct intervention in August 2014
- and now Russia again, without any solid reason, invaded Ukraine, is bombing its cities, killed tens of thousands and tries to erase it from the map.

looking at it from whatever perspective, I think that Ukrainians have like 100x times more reasons to be pissed about Russians than the other way around.
