Our naming tradition is a hybrid of Royal Navy and US Navy in that we name all our warships after Mythological figures/creatures or Sea creatures and figures. This convention might never change as it's neutral politically for everyone and nobody will be lobbying about names at the MoD or in the Parliament.

We have been discussing this for many years. As it always happens, this project is in Limbo for years and now something seems to be happening. Most of the delay in our acquisition of product or development of product is because of poor decision making and not because of the development time and acquisition time. Now we can hope that all this delay is utilised to configure the submarine in most sophisticated way. We can hope that all the selection procedure and other things will happen in time bound manner and we shall be able to acquire the submarines along with the necessary technology to produce time in India. We can order few more scorpene if acquisitin delays. I hope that French submarine is selected so that we can utilize our experience to make it faster.

True. My mistake. Sorry. I misread it as diesel electric subs.

Actually this is the time when we should keep designing and inducting 1 advance Nuke sub every three year and one diesel electric sub every year for next few years. Later on we can decide the number according to threat perceptions of that time.

Only the US has the capability to churn out Virginia class SSN every 3-4 years.
Rest of the P5 take on average 7-8 years to build a SSN and sometimes even 10 years

Actually current convention is alright. If else you would have an ego war if different regions will play ego based on the name of the warships given to which class.
We should name after cities, rivers, regions, mountains etc. The weapons can be named after our God's weapons.
