Long range Subsonic cruise missile Nirbhaya test fired from ITR
Posted on 21/12/2016 by Dailyexcelsior

BALASORE: India today successfully test-fired its Long range subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay from the Integrated Test Range(ITR) at Chandipur on sea off Odisha coast.
ITR sources said the 1000 km range missile was test-fired around 1156 hours from the launch complex three of the Integrated test Range at Chandipur, about 15 kms from here.
Nirbhaya is said to be India’s answer to America’s Tomahawk and Pakistan’s Babur missile.
Sources said after blasting off from launch pad, the two-stage Nirbhaya took a unique trajectory in its entire path to the target.
Being a terrain hugging missile, Nirbhaya is difficult to detect by the enemy’s radars.
The missile keeps on encircling the area of its target for several minutes and then hits the bull’s eye’ on an opportune time, defence sources said.
Capable of carrying multiple payloads, the missile can engage several targets in a single flight.
This lethal weapon can be launched from various kind of platforms, ranging from surface lorry to a ship, from air and even from underwater vessels, ITR sources said. (AGENCIES)

Hemant Raut twittes:

As apprehended by @NewIndianXpress sub-sonic cruise #missile Nirbhay tested with faults in system failed during its 4th test. @DRDO_India

Ohhhhh no.Very sad. We are not witnessing the similar success in case of Nirbhay which we tested in other missiles. There is something seriously wrong which DRDO guys are unable to detect.

Test firing successfully and success in test are 2 different matters.
I don't think they simply meant firing of the missile was successful. I think the meant the complete test was successful. Test took place at 11:56. I don't think AIR was announce a successful firing 2 hours after the test was started (and probably complete by then)

Nirbhay failed .
DRDO shouldn't have tested Nirbhay as according to DRDO the fuel tank used in the missile system had not cleared the Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) tests thus making it vulnerable during flight. Safety of the system, quality of subsystems and reliability of the build components were also compromised during the trial.

It also had problems in its guidance systems especially the ring laser gyros .

It is good that problems are known. Let us hope that DRDO will not take any chance next time and system shall be full proof.

Are you simply quoting what NIE wrote yesterday or you got any other source other then that?
Seems NIE is making it a failure all by themselves. Not yet seen anyone reporting such till now. From yesterday onwards NIE is reporting its failure.

This is very shocking. Nirbhay is very crucial for us for conventional long range strikes although am not sure about utility of sub sonic cruise missiles for nuclear delivery. Cold start will be incomplete without Nirbhay

Hemant Rout is most reliable reporter on missile tests. He had also reported that Feb 16 Prithvi 2 missile test failed to reach desired accuracy (although missile dropped its warhead)

Actually Hemant Rout is the only journalist who being a local is allowed into the ITR (Integrated test range) this is being done for security reasons as IB can watch one journalist rather than 10 which might be security nightmare.
DD is also allowed for filming when DRDO wants video clips to be shown . Only rarely they allow other journos after proper security check .

So we are shit out of luck as Hemant Rout is the only person who is allowed so any news about missile tests only comes from him for obvious security reasons.

May be, but he is not the only reporter who is let in and it can't be assumed that he has witnessed the test today. Others like Pallav Bagla too has been a part of media team to witness tests in past.
On other note, look what AIR published 2 hours after the test. Now they would not post anything like that unless and untill it has been officially approved by DRDO or any relevant testing authority present at site.
It may not be a 100% success, but as Hemant Rout reported, its hard to say that its a complete failure. He is simply quoting what he reported yesterday. That too again by some unnamed source and junior DRDO official.

Its possible but most of the time he is the only one having access to DRDO ITR guys . DRDO doesn't have a press team not that I know off.

Thats it.... All are reporting based on tits and bits from one or another. There is nothing official out as of now. So lets wait for some official declaration to come out. As of now, it seems majority are reporting its success.
