Doklam standoff: Sushma Swaraj meets Bhutan counterpart in Kathmandu
This was the first high-level contact between the two sides since the beginning of the faceoff near the Sikkim border in mid-June. China has accused Indian troops of trespassing into Doklam or Donglang, a region which is controlled by Beijing but is claimed by Thimphu.
Swaraj and Dorji mainly focussed on the Doklam standoff, with their discussions centring round the positions taken by their countries on the issue and measures taken to end the face-off, according to diplomatic sources.
“We hope that the current standoff in Doklam will be sorted out peacefully,” Dorji said after the meeting. Both sides “should be satisfied from any of the outcomes”, he said without giving details.
India has said it acted in coordination with the Bhutan government to block the construction of a road by Chinese troops in the strategic Doklam region, located at the junction of the frontiers of India, Bhutan and China. The confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops is now in its second month.
