China's aircraft carrier: in name only

Analysis: China's aircraft carrier: in name only

Reuters) - When Japanese activists scrambled ashore on a disputed island chain in the East China Sea this month, one of China's most hawkish military commentators proposed an uncharacteristically mild response.

Retired Major General Luo Yuan suggested naming China's new aircraft carrier Diaoyu, after the Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea. It would demonstrate China's sovereignty over the islands known as the Senkakus in Japanese, he said.

For a notable hardliner, it was one of the least bellicose reactions he has advocated throughout a series of territorial rows that have soured China's ties with its neighbors in recent months.

More typical was General Luo's warning in April that the Chinese navy would "strike hard" if provoked during a dispute with the Philippines over Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.

One possible reason for General Luo's restraint, military analysts say, is he knows it could be towards the end of the decade before China can actually deploy the new carrier to the disputed islands or any other trouble spot.

Despite public anticipation in China that the carrier -- a refitted, Soviet-era vessel bought from Ukraine -- will soon become the flagship of a powerful navy, defense experts say it lacks the strike aircraft, weapons, electronics, training and logistical support it needs to become a fighting warship.

"There is considerable uncertainty involved, but it could take anything from three to five years," said Carlo Kopp, the Melbourne, Australia based co-founder of Air Power Australia, an independent military think tank.

Aircraft carriers are only useful for US, for all others it's just a prestige toy. But some countries have the money to burn for such a toy while many others don't.

I don't know if the Chinese aircraft carrier is up to the mark, but the Chinese feel that it is the best thing that could happen on Earth!

Sorry, but this is not the case for IN.

The IN's operations during the 71 war centered around the carrier in the Bay of Bengal. Viraat was prepared to face off against the American carrier too.

Just as the Indians think the refurbished AC would be the pride of your NAVY. 7 out of 8 boilers broken is not the worst thing that could happen. On the bright side, this accident happened before the ship was handed to your NAVY. Otherwise, you will have to pay fee to tow it back to Russia.

I think India would spent another 1 billion USD to make it powered by nuclear powered, just might need another 5-7 yrs.

Sailors manning the rail on the Liaoning.

After more than 100 days sea over a year's time, it seems she's set for commissioning now...

That really depends on what your naval doctrine is. If you are planning a blue water navy, CBG(s) is/are must have, because without the air superiority at hand, any thing of yours that flow on water are turkey shoot practice target for enemy jets. Some might argue area defense capability on board warships, and that would be a simple math quiz on how far can a ship-borne radar can see and how far can your SAM reach VS how far can a fighter/attacker see and how far their air to surface missile can reach.

They are useful to any country that spends the money to keep them combat ready. They are only prestige toys if they are not ready for war.

AC group is just a white elephant in wars among Major powers such as USA, CHina and Russia. AC coundn't survive one week after such wars were to happen.

During such wars, sub with nuke missles would be decisive force.

If one see things from your view then it can also be said, In War times no Submarine can survive near hostile water, they are sitting ducks for ASW platform from below, Above and on surface..

Same can be said about DDG even the once armed with Chinese clone of Naval variant of S-300, That they can be sunk via Submarine launched SLCM, Air power, Surface targets..

And same can be said about CBG what you mentioned below..
