Safran close to India combat jet engine deal -sources
PARIS, Feb 27 (Reuters) - France’s Safran is close to an agreement to supply a version of its M88 military jet engine for India’s Tejas light combat aircraft, two people close to the discussions said.

The deal, if confirmed, could be finalised during a visit to India by French President Emmanuel Macron next month, they said, adding that negotiations could still be blown off course.

Safran declined comment. French newspaper La Tribune, which first reported the possible deal, said the M88 would be offered as part of a revived version of India’s stalled Kaveri jet engine programme, which was initially linked to the Tejas.

The Tejas fighter entered service in 2016, 33 years after it was approved as the country sought to build a modern fighter from scratch for an air force that was entirely dependent on foreign - mostly Soviet-origin - aircraft.

But the single-engine plane has been dogged by production delays at state-run Hindustan Aeronautics and only a small number have so far entered the air force, currently powered by engines from General Electric. (Reporting by Tim Hepher; editing by Diane Craft)

I always had the suspicion that the Government was not too happy with using US engines for all the production units of the LCA. The unreliable reputation of the US is a big disincentive. There is a history of the US Congress and the Senate imposing sanctions on countries whose behaviour was deemed inappropriate. Any Congressman or Senator can introduce a bill sanctioning a country. The Americans have only themselves to blame for countries to distrust them.

France has never sanctioned India and even now has a largely independent foreign policy. Though they had more leverage during the cold War. The presence of the Soviet Union meant that the US could not put too much pressure on France to toe its line.

I believe once French engines start to replace the GE404 engines there will be a spurt in the production of the Tejas. Of course our long term goal is to have an indigenous Kaveri engine powering the LCA in the not too distant future.

Anyway let's wait. Hope this is not a rumour which fizzles out.

No French, Russian, British engine can match d quality of American engines...u hate/love d Yanks But Muricans make best Jet Engines in d world..Yup there is always risk of Murican sanctions when it comes to critical defense tech But we should also never forget dat there is big contribution of American engines in LCA's success we see today..also too much reports hv come about safran,RR,PW about ToT dat one doesn't know what to believe

GE isn't going to be willing to transfer technology of their crown jewel. They won't even give ToT for GE404, let alone 414.
Whyndon’t we try to reverse engineer and learn from it?

A good portion of our economy relies on the outsourced income generated from Uncle Sam and Team. You dont want it all crippled under sanctions just to reverse engineer a jet engine for which 90% of research has already been done in the country.

Dude f404 engines are not even allowed to disassemble here and u r talking about reverse engineering.
We should focus on economy and defence systems more, we should create more defensive systems instead of offensive until our economy becomes great.

It cannot be reverse engineered easily.
The Chinese have access to the latest Western civilian engines.
I believe they tried and failed. That is why they still import Western and Russian engines for both their military and civilian planes. And the Chinese are probably the pioneers and the experts at reverse engineering. Much of their military hardware trace their origins to reverse engineered Russian weapons.

Yes, in many cases reverse engineering works.

What the fuck is this shit about reverse engineering.
We already have a Engine that delivers 80% to 85% of the required thrust on the very first try.
All that is left is fine tuning the engine that will require some more effort and time.
If GTRE license and Trains the pvt sector than may be they will be able to master low thrust engine.
It's a gradual process America has an ecosystem for all engine related tech developed over 100 years.
Same ecosystem should be created here.

And that ecosystem can't be limited to one organisation GTRE and DRDO or else it will be failure like the Soviet model.

May be a public private consortium would be a better option for undertaking projects in Long term.

Even if you do with the design and software good luck reversing the metallurgy.
