That's okay, we are not treaty allies like we were with the Soviets. The world has changed and Russia cannot fulfill all our needs the way the Soviets did. We have to move away from Russia for our own good; Expect them to throw a tantrum. Expect India to remain unaffected by that tantrum. This was Russia behaving like jealous girlfriend by wrecking your stuff and threating to split! Countries sometimes behave like women!
We picked our strategic autonomy in weapons diversification ourselves. Russia was offering attack helos, jets and JVs but we bought Apache, and Rafale and M777 and K9 Thunder. If we can diversify our vendors, can't Russia diversify their customers? They have to do it for their own survival. We should anticipate it instead of being surprised.
We are a bigger economy, so we invested in RnD and upgraded to the Nag missile so we don't need to import that. Just like we don't need the Mig 21 in lieu of Tejas. Let Russia export its old tech to Pakistan. If you throw money at them to stop them from exporting, then every 6 months they will try to blackmail you with a new export to Pakistan. Hum bhi toh dekhein Russia me kitna dum hai bechne ka aur Pakistan ki jeb me kitna dum hai kharid ne ka. India is in a different orbit now. Hum toh America ko thenga dikhate hain, Russia kya cheez hai. Let them mingle around with countries of their own caliber, even China treats them like no more than a low cost weapons vendor. It's a downgrade for Russia that they have to go from selling weapons to India and China to selling weapons to Pakistan and Vietnam. They should be worried more about their diminishing stature and order book, more than us. India and China is working to manufacture their own weapons and Russia and USA will need to find new customers when their old customers become self-reliant. Both will throw tantrums.
China doesn't fret about Russian weapons sales to India, why is that? they see themselves in a different league, competing with the US for the top most position. They don't see themselves in a gutter fight with smaller powers like Russia. They settle their invoices for whatever oil and weapons they import but don't bother that the vendor is selling to India and Vietnam as well. Never waste your time on people lower in caliber than you.
India has also set its sights higher >> indegenization in weapons and autonomy in foreign policy.
