The French Rafale employs the OSF (Optronique Secteur Frontal or Front Sector Optronics – FSO), which comprises dual band IRST/FLIR, TV and Laser rangefinder, for air-to-air and air-to-ground surveillance and targeting. It was the first dual band IR system (MWIR and LWIR) in the West. However, at the current standard of Rafale (F3) the OSF retains only the TV/Laser subsystem, since the IR subsystem is considered obsolete, and will be replaced by an upgraded one at the future standard F4.

The FSO’s powerful TV sensor (cued by the Rafale’s active and passive sensors) is truly valuable to positively identify targets in situations where a visual contact is required by the rules of engagement.

RBE-2AA Range : 124 mi (200 km)

OSF-NG Range : 62 mi (100 km)

Other key capabilities include sensor fusion of the Rafale’s RBE-2AA Active Electronically Scanned Array multi-mode radar, which can track numerous targets over 124 miles away, with its discrete OSF infrared-search and track system, which has an unusually long range of sixty-two miles.

In fact even this range of OSF will go down significantly in bad weather. Issue with IR channel was not of obsolescence but only money. Which is why IAF asked for IR channel on their Rafales.

So Frenchies get it in F4 and we get it now. This kind of justifies the cost of the Rafale.

F 22 will eat it out before that... Should be a little more than that I guess.
depend of so many things...
Altitude of the Rafale and of the target (ie air temperature, humidity).
Is the target from front, side or rear?
Is the target in ffull after burner or not?
Is the target moving fast or not (T°C of the frame)?
etc...

No real data available for noobies like us. :crying:

No. It was not money (ie not ONLY money)
The IR channel relialbility was too poor, and the technology too old. French air force decided not to retain it, wainting for a new and up to date version.

Bhosda means a very wide vagina, which has been opened up numerous times because of sexual intercourse and can no longer give pleasure which a tight one would give..

You forget just some things, as usual :
Exocet block 3 (range over 180km in sea sea operation) can be adapted.
Talios is better than Litening. The french engineers of Thales had checked that during the test of Litening on Rafale... specially it has a slightly better range and a AI than help to find and then track a target, specially moving target.
AASM is now in a block 4 version, cheaper and perfectly comparable to JDAM.

As usual the americans on this forum are averagely brainded and think US products are always better.... we all see what happend with Boeing 737 Max.... or the F35 than will not be operationnal before 2024 according to the USAF itself (and 2024 is a very optimistic vision).

Good day looser.
Haha, here comes a wanna be french who is not even french. Your personal attacks are poor attempt at not having a good comeback. Stop pretending to be french.. Indians don’t need to hate Americans- that includes you.
