Common Man will be happy when we have manufacturing of 100% indigenously developed Engines for our fighter jets. The fighter planes that we can truely call made in India. We hope our think tank will take us to this self reliance.

Again same defence offered by drdo/hal/gtre trolls.

We have failed because of lacklustre funding and inability to retain top talent in dpsu's courtesy

1)low pay
2)reservations courtesy which 50% of people should never have been working there.

If this continues, especially the funding part we will never achieve success.

U don't get the point.

Compared to what they are offered by other mnc's we give peanuts.
We need IIT/NIT grade brilliant students for research who will never come and work for such pay as they are offered 3-4 times than that by private cos.

Plus what about 50 percent reservation??
How can an organization make anything when its 50% workforce never deserved to be there??

Research is not conducted this way.

hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,

The chief of ISRO's chandriyan project is from Government college of technology , coimbatore,

The chief of the acclaimed ISRO Mars Orbiter project is from Coimbatore Institute of technology(CIT), where I did my BE Mech,

The mars oribiter was acclaimed as one of the best scientific feat by international journals for the success it got in the first attempt at such a short notice and shoe string budget, Now he is getting a flurry of offers from international space majors for the success of the deep space navigational algorithms successfully proved in MOM>

now we hear that the mars orbiter has used up only 2 Kg of its 37 Kg fuel for its orbital manouvring , so that it has enough fuel left for another ten years, So what was intended as just 100 day operation is now getting extended into years.

So stop peddling this IIT or nothing BS here.

US to help India design, develop jet engines

Washington has agreed to assist Delhi in sharing, designing and developing jet engines for aircraft—a critical technology that is exclusively owned by a handful of countries—in what is being considered a big step forward in Indo-US defence collaboration.
The assistance comes within months of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) winding up a Russia-backed project to develop Kaveri jet engines after losing more than Rs 2,000 crore and almost three decades.
Besides jet engines, the two countries identified four joint pathfinder military projects and created a working group to explore the possibility of using some sophisticated US technologies for Indian Navy's future aircraft carrier, whose design is still being worked out.
New Delhi and Washington negotiated the text of the bilateral Defence Framework Agreement for the next 10 years as the existing framework signed in 2005 by then defence minister Pranab Mukherjee and his US counterpart Donald Rumsfeld expired in 2014. The new pact, however, is yet to be signed.
"We have decided to take our growing defence cooperation to a new level. We have agreed, in principle, to pursue co-development and co-production of specific advanced defence projects. These will help upgrade our domestic defence industry, and expand the manufacturing sector in India," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the joint press conference with US President Barack Obama here on Sunday.
The big takeaway is the collaboration on jet engines, to be used in home-grown aircraft. "India and the US have agreed to explore development of jet engine in the country. It would be broader than the Kaveri programme," said S Jaishankar, Indian Ambassador to the US.
Originally meant for use in indigenous light combat aircraft, the Kaveri jet engine was being developed with support from Russia. But the engine developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment in Bengaluru could fly only for 73 hours on the IL-76 Flying Test Bed (FTB) in Russia.
Because of the delay, DRDO picked up the US-made GE 404 engine for the Tejas Mk-1 and GE 414 for the Tejas Mk-II aircraft.
Four joint projects
The four joint projects in defence are next-generation Raymond mini unmanned air vehicles, roll-on-roll-off kits for C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, mobile electric hybrid power systems, and uniform integrated protected ensemble increment-II. A working group will be set up to explore aircraft carrier technology.
The US Defence Department has agreed to establish a dedicated rapid reaction team focused exclusively on advancing defence technology and trade initiative, which may lead to additional joint projects in the near future. The two leaders also agreed to cooperate on Delhi's efforts to establish a defence industrial base in India, including through initiatives like "Make in India", according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.

Lets hope, in the interest of greater partnership, US concedes to Indian demand for engines and we start production in India with transfer of technology.

you should take anything written by TOI correspondents with more than a bucketful of salt. For instance while the correspondent says that foreign parachutes can be used for 100 times and DRDO parachutes can be used for only 40 times, did he take into account the cost difference between them?

Also DRDO only develops products asked for by armed forces and MOD. Simply saying that foreign UAVs fly for 28 hours , and quad copter can fly only for 8 hours is stupid. DRDO Quad copter's GSQR given by army may be for tactical battle field use with a compact size. So there is no way in the world that they can fly for 28 days.

Either some guys are playing our defence minister's inexperience on the way DRDO functions or most of the stuff reported is as usual fake!!!!

Also a defence minister can call DRDO guys to his office and get a detailed presentation if he wants, He certainly need not enquire about such details like the equivalent of Akash in PAF and brahmos fuel in vigyan expo.

There was a reason why I didn't quote any of the statements in the article but for the one about Kaveri.

Even without reservations and funding constraints and even with decades of reverse engineering skills obviously chinese were not even close to GTRE!!!!

The Kaveri engine performed for 57 hours continuously during tests in Russia, whereas the Chinese WS-10 could not.

GTRE officials claimed that Kaveri engine was successfully tested by DRDO on 3rd November 2010 in flying test bed (FTB) IL-76 aircraft of Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI) in Russia. engine replaced one of the four engines in test bed aircraft was operational right from take-off to landing up to an altitude of 6km at speed of 0.6 Mach no and flew for a period of 1 hour. GTRE also further claims that more 57 hours of flight tests were covered up to 12km altitude at speed of 0.7 Mach.
