R Sundar , CEO, Aerospace Engineers in a Interview with AeroMag magazine about Kaveri Engine.

Q:What's the latest on the Kaveri engine? GTRE's association with LCA Tejas programme?

A :Kaveri engine prototype was integrated with IL-76 aircraft at Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI), Russia and flight tests have been successfully carried out. Issues required to be addressed have been identified and are being addressed and it is planned to commence flight trials for technology demonstration of Kaveri engine with LCA Tejas Mk-I in about three years
time.

GTRE has so far developed 9 prototypes of Kaveri engines and 4 prototypes of Kabini (Core) engines. The engines have run cumulatively for over 2200 hours at ground and altitude conditions for various requirements including performance, operability, endurance, environmental etc. Further endurance testing is under progress at GTRE. Two major milestones
achieved viz. successful completion of Official Altitude Testing (OAT) and completion of first block of flights of Kaveri engine in Flying Test Bed (FTB) have demonstrated the technological capability and maturing of the indigenous efforts.

Further in the magazine It is mentioned that.

LCA will be tested for Angle of Attack more than 22 and maneuvering greater than 6 g.
Can they use these engines on drones?

@tramp, As of today , no source/news for Kaveri+ 'Drones' particularly.

Once,Dr. C P Ramanarayanan,Director , GTRE. mentioned in the interview with AeroMag

"the Kaveri dry engine is planned to be used as a power plant for an 'experimental autonomous air vehicle'. "

There was a report that the ceramic molded mono-crystalline blades were breaking and shooting off in Kaveri engine? Also, max thrust achieved till now is only 83kn. True?

A non-afterburning version will be equipped on the AURA.

Apart from that, GTRE is trying to offer a gas turbine engine for tanks. They have successfully managed to build a version for small ships like frigates.

Its Confirmed now that India's GTRE and French engine maker Snecma will not be working together in development of a New Kaveri engine for India's 5th Generation AMCA aircraft project , as per sources Both couldn't agree on work sharing agreement and also funding of the project .

Snecma wanted to use Core of uprated derivative of the M88-2 engine that powers the French Rafale fighter for development of New Kaveri engine (K-10) but after failed talks Now, RFP will be send to other Engine manufactures for co-development of new Kaveri engine (K-10) which will power AMCA , Sources have ruled out Kaveri Engine Powering Tejas aircraft in near future , spin-off engine of current Kaveri engine (K-9+) will be used to power India's first Stealthy Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle (USAV).

GTRE still plans to integrate Kaveri K-9+ engine with Tejas once the Engine is ready to complete its development , A older Tejas test aircraft operated by India's Aeronautical Development Agency will be used for the integration . Since its first run in 1996 nine Kaveri engines were built. Although, due to the delays in development and insufficient thrust, Kaveri is not destined for the Tejas Indigenous Fighter Aircraft, new engine for AMCA will need to generate at least 90 KN of thrust. "Development and flight-testing of the new engine will take at least five to six years."

The Engines for FGFA ; Su 30 mki and Rafale HAVE been Decided

Similarly LCA mk 2 will use GE 414

So why do we NEED a Kaveri at all

For that Paper plane called AMCA

Neither we need AMCA nor we need Kaveri

After LCA mk 2 HAL and ADA can make a Twin Engined MCA
ie a 4.5 GEN Plane with the engines of FGFA ie AL 41

By Going for an " stealthy " AMCA ; ADA is overstretching and overeaching itself

ADA should make the BEST 4.5 Gen plane in the world RATHER
than making a Fifth Gen AMCA

so do want us to be dependent on US and Russians for engines for ever?
If Kaveri engine comes good, it might replace GE 414 engines for US, save us money and help us gain knowledge

there are no takers for the best 4.5th gen brand new plane that will be delivered a decade or so later.

rather than hicthing on russian or eurojet engine , it is better to go for a bit lesser powered kaveri engine to get a cost effective free from outside interference more in number AMCA.

The rafale itself flies with 2 x75 KN engines. No harm in going for AMCA with same 2X 75 kn(which is already achieved by kaveri) in prototype period and introduce higher powered engines later.

remember the russians declined to modify their T-72 chasis for use in Karna Tank-Ex.

So taking a tough path now will avoid swallowing many bitter pills later. No one wants india to emerge as full fledged super power by providing their engines to AMCA.

Kaveri has been completely delinked from LCA. Even if K-10 is made, it will never see service on LCA. This was confirmed by MoD, GTRE and in an interview with P. Rajkumar.

K-9 / K-9+ will be a demonstrator engine. A derivative will be used in AURA.

K-10 is for AMCA. May also be used in a future program for a second AURA like UCAV.

K-10 may be ready well after LCA program ends.

Vietnam is interested to purchase Tejas after 2017, They intend to buy the Aircraft given it should be powered by Indian Kaveri or Russian..

if k-10 has the same form fit as that of F-414 and manages to produce 100 odd Kn , it will definitely find a place in LCA mk-2 in engine replacement. No one can out law it. It will also come in as MLU upgrade in mk-1 as well.

People said Kaveri is completely delinked from LCA in the context that delays in kaveri won't stall the LCA program. If within a decade if k-10 manages to produce the same thrust as required by LCA it will definitely come in as replacement because form fit is going to be the same.

No one is saying Astra mk-2 is meant for LCA mk-2. Both are completely delinked at the moment now. But if both attain maturity at the same time , Will IAF bar Astra for Tejas mk-2?

A definite No. Same goes for K-10 if it matures in time for AMCA and LCA engine replacement.

The System is consider Smaller Class in Gas Turbine Engines Propulsion than those General Electric LM2500 gas turbine powering IN bigger displacement Ships..

As some of the ships are now operational and some under construction, Kaveri power-pack may in future provide a powerful power-package in a upgrade..
