There seems to be significant chasm between the general public who love the movie- as much as they are horrified by what it shows- and the left and even centrist intellectuals. The intellectuals are quick to denounce the movie as communal, one sided, Islamophobic and 'catering to the agenda of the current dispensation' blah blah. The people are moved, speechless and outraged( that the truth was hidden). The extensive commentary on the movie, including bringing in even a few Kashmiri Hindus to critique it, is an acknowledgment that there is an awakening in the public, that concerns these highbrow types. The intellectual ground is slipping under their feet, the old cliches and pat, made to order equivalences, are very unlikely to find favour anymore.

x-posting: "They can’t do such activities in large scale because of the presence of Indian Security forces. If India didn’t have an active presence on the ground and J&K Police wasn’t equipped, trained and controlled like it is now. You would see a lot lot more dead bodies scattered all over the streets. The shootings and assassinations will happen on daily basis."

I wonder if all these 'left' or left liberal commentators , in the Wire, the Hindu, Rolling Stone India, Film Companion etc, plus ethnic Indians writing for various publications in North America and Europe, realise that they would definitely be targeted if they were living in Kashmir in the 1990s and after. Unless they converted to Islam, supported the insurgency/terror, or alternatively, left the valley and gave their womenfolk up. Would they then be writing so detachedly about 'nuance', 'balance', 'communal', "Islamophobia" et al? It's a lot easier to sit in offices, campuses or coffee houses in Delhi and Mumbai, and rant about Hindus and the BJP. Try doing the same in 1990, with respect to the JKLF, Hizbul and their supporters, in the Kashmir valley.

What’s the point? You can keep making a thousand films but the fact still remains that their “Operation Tupac” is still alive. Is kashmir militancy free? Have KPs returned yet?
