OFB looks at replacing ageing INSAS rifles; to get 1.86 lakh 7.62-mm automatic rifles

The Ordnance Factories Board (ODB) today said it was set to receive orders for around 1.86 lakh of its newly developed 7.62-mm automatic rifles from the Army to replace the ageing INSAS rifles.

The Army has sought approximately 8 lakh 7.62x51 mm assault rifles, out of which 72,000 rifles will be immediately purchased through global tender, OFB member (Weapons, Vehicles and Equipment) Hari Mohan said.

"Of the remaining nearly 7.3 lakh rifles, the armed forces will go for Request for Proposal (RFP) route from around the globe for 75 per cent of its requirement, while the OFB will get orders for the rest 25 per cent," he told newspersons here.

He said the OFB would also participate in the RFP tendering process.

OFB chairman S K Chourasia said, "Ordnance factories would receive orders for approximately 1.86 lakh of the Army's 7.62 mm rifle requirement".

The nodal factory for the purpose would be Rifle Factory, Ishapore, West Bengal, he said.

"Trials for the newly developed rifle has been completed and the Army is happy with the weapon," Mohan said.

He said further trials of the prototype developed by OFB in a larger scale will be done soon, following which production of the rifle will commence.

Chourasia said the Army and paramilitary forces at present use the 5.56 mm INSAS rifles, which are mainly for the purpose of shooting to incapacitate.

"But now with the changing security scenario and requirements, the Army has sought a rifle for 'shoot to kill' purpose to replace the INSAS," Chourasia said, adding the forces now need guns of higher calibre which are more lethal like the 7.62x51 mm assault rifles.

The INSAS rifles were introduced by OFB in 1992-93 and has undergone 23 improvements, with the latest version being the 1B1 model.

OFB member Saurav Kumar said the organisation had received orders of Rs 250 crore for exports of different weapons and equipments in 2017-18 and has so far supplied items worth Rs 190 crore.

He said the exports have been to Gulf and South-East Asian countries, but did not specify the countries to which the weapons were being sold owing to confidentiality reasons.

Speaking on the occasion of its 217th foundation day, Chourasia said the goal of OFB, which has achieved 87 per cent overall indigenisation, is of transformation from an importer to that of an exporter.

"There has been a paradigm shift in defence procurement in our country and we have to compete with the private sector to get orders for weaponry and other equipments," he said.

The OFB chairman said for the purpose of meeting the present day requirements, all the 41 ordnance factories spread across the country were being constantly upgraded with an emphasis on research and development.

Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) consisting of the Indian Ordnance Factories is an industrial organisation, functioning under the Department of Defence Production of Ministry of Defence.

In reference to the article below I am wondering that will 25% order directly go to OFB. Is this a confirmed order?

And as the same OFB can go for RFP and army has already tested the rifle why they need another. Is there a role variation or requirements vary?

Well there is no budget TBH. TDP pulled out of the alliance coz they dint get enough grants, Army is angry coz of less money allocated. GST has put a lot of strain on the money available for govt to spend.

Latest
Army to conduct trials of OFB made JVPC Carbine Today
March 20, 2018 foxbat
After the successful trial of JVPC Conduct by CRPF , now army will test the JVPC today.

Much anticipated Joint Venture Protective Carbine i.e. JVPC is ready for launching to counter terrorists and naxalite attacks inside the country’s border. It has been made by the Small Arms Factory located in Kanpur and the latest modified carbines shown to the country on 18th of March on the occasion of Ordnance Factory Day.

Kanpur’s Small Arms Factory has developed a carbine that is quite suitable for content Terrorism operations & special operations. The advantage of joint venture protective carbine i.e. JVPC is that it does not shake and stay constant while firing. It is operated by gas and selective fire. It will fulfill the needs of paramilitary forces and state police forces to deal with terrorists and naxalite attacks within the country’s border. The fire capacity of JVPC carbine is 200 meters and it can fire 900 rounds in a minute. JVPC weight only 3 kg is lower than other carbines due to its small butt.

The JVPV was designed after the Indian Army’s disappointment with the progress of a carbine version of the INSAS rifle and Amogh based on Ak-47. The JVPC was designed to rectify the shortcomings of the previous developments. Through various trials and improvements, the ARDE came out with a grip-feeding, Uzi-like design that shortened the length of the weapon, making it more suitable for CQC purposes. Later its ergonomics were improved, boosting its export potential. The weapon is said to be capable of penetrating bullet-proof jackets. It was created as an offshoot of the INSAS small arms program.

Apart from this, belt fed light machine guns have also been developed which can soon become part of the Indian Army.

Due to the good performance of JVPC OFB already got order from Chhattisgarh police of 640 & 35 thousand from CRPF .

@vmt for quoting Johny Baba.....basing the design means not the Xerox copy of the original but you can still move the placing of some main parts here and there. For instance, pistol grip and trigger can move a little forward to ease the bigger round's chamber behind.

Build quality of the Trichy seems far better than the Ghatak. I wonder why doesn't the army use these as a stop gap arrangement till the new assault rifles are inducted. Definatlely better than the older AK-47s used by counter insurgency units
Also many more rivets...

TAR doesn't have P-rails though. Would love to see something like this as a future combo of the two.
