When going through firearm videos, I found this one.

I remember a thread for 7.62*51 NATO, couldn't find the appropriate thread.

Here is a bit of history.

PS. Are we still using 12 inch bayonets!?

Yeah,Ishapore Rifles are quite famous in western gun markets.

Like Kunal Dada said once somewhere here,we should've converted these Ishapore 2A1s into bolt action sniper rifles,similar to those L42 Lee-Enfield Sniper Rifles which were used by SAS and other commonwealth armies.

Edit: Indeed OFB had produced a sniper variant of Ishapore 2A1,but it seems like many other guns made by OFB/DRDO it went in vain.

Not related to INSAS, but a rather rare image: IA soldier with Sterling/SAF Carbine 1A, during Exercise Rudra Akrosh in 2012 -

Chattisgarh STF ( Special Task Force ) Commando carrying Excalibur Rifle deployed in heavy rains.
Looks like paramilitary and state police forces have adopted Excalibur rifle. Which one is better insas 1b1 or Excalibur? What are the differences between insas mk1c and Excalibur? Please shed some light.

I will answer your post in two parts, 1st part is about Excalibur MK1A as it known now, I had a opportunity to hold and feel it during 2014, here is my short review ..

==================>

At first look & touch, The rifle is compact & Light weighted compare to INSAS 1B1 which is in service, The size of the rifle is more or less same as a M4 carbine, This is probably because the barrel is not a 18 inch as its on 1B1 but this Excaluber has a 16inch barrel !, Unlike what i saw previously in defexpos, Excalibur has 18inch barrels, This means Excalibur has variants & the one in my hand was a 16inch barrel one for CQB ops

The rifle Excalibur as seen in the picture is smaller than an AK47/AKM and little longer than TAR-21 of 18inch, It was lighter around 2 kgs and with full loaded 22rnds Magazine its weight is around 2.5kgs, Unlike 1B1 is 3.5kgs full loaded, It was pleasure to hold this Rifle ..

Here the Rifle is in folded butt configuration, To be frank the size in this configuration was lesser than 9mm silenced carbine used in Army , This is perfect and impressive in CQB ops, where fighting is in tight corners ..

Now lets see some details in selector switch, S for semi auto, R for safety and A for automatic, This is not same with 1B1 as 1B1 options have no automatic but Burst, The switch itself is not same as 1B1`s, The Rifle is design for spray and pray like AK which is again for CQB ops, Also the Grip is also not like AK or 1B1`s, Though the Rifle retain similar 1B1`s rail, Trigger and almost all other major important parts for operating the rifle hence no new training for using this rifle..

What makes Excalibur looks different from his brother 1B1 is the over all fore-grip design which extend over gas pipe so does till Cocking handle, The material used is not a cheap plastic as many would call, But was rugged and good hard fiber furniture, Same material is used in Rifle butt, It is important to note the material used on Excalibur is not the same used over Improved 1B1, Excalibur is indeed a improved INSAS over Improved 1B1 INSAS, Unfortunately its not under service ..
=====================
=====================

Conclusion : What i learned is that Excalibur has different version itself, Mainly with different barrels and it is design for both Long and Close combat operations, It is light and short compare to 1B1 in service, I was impressed with the fiber quality that Rifle offers compare to 1B1 also the Rifle operation is same as 1B1 hence it does not require new training to handle, Overall its a good design rifle and deserve operational service within Army..

It is also unfortunate that i cannot used this nice Rifle over firing range to know full extend of its capability and preform-ace ..

Looks like paramilitary and state police forces have adopted Excalibur rifle. Which one is better insas 1b1 or Excalibur? What are the differences between insas mk1c and Excalibur? Please shed some light.

2nd part is about Excalibur MK1C as its known now, I had a opportunity to look at it during 2016, here is my short review ..

================================>>

Unlike what i saw previously in 2014, The new Excalibur 2015 looks more of a flushed design of much like improved 1B1 but with notable differences in receiver design, Hand guard comes with its own built in quad-rails, Its barrel is now little shorter by 3mm, With new muzzle brake and new folding stock made of metal, It retain other features of both Excalibur and 1B1 improved

Unlike former design this design has a quad rail built in on hand guard, And fiber quality is much better than its former design too.

Now lets see some details in selector switch, S for semi auto, R for safety and A for automatic, This is same with former design, But much cleaner without much rebids around.

The pistol grip is retain from former design, Its simple and large and wide for gripping.

Here the Rifle is in folded butt configuration, To be frank the size in this configuration was lesser its previous form but the folding stock is now in metal, This is perfect and impressive in CQB ops, where fighting is in tight corners
Looks like paramilitary and state police forces have adopted Excalibur rifle. Which one is better insas 1b1 or Excalibur? What are the differences between insas mk1c and Excalibur? Please shed some light.

Excalibur MK1C...Looks like a very polished and well designed rifle....Why it's not in service is puzzling...the little i know about service rifles is that RELIABILITY is the most important factor.....and as it's an improvement on earlier INSAS, it should be very relaible (i see INSAS in pictures of Siachen etc, whereas i don't see Tavors or other rifles(except maybe AKs), so it must be very relaible)......

Is the new OFB 7.62x51mm rifle based on this same platform ?

One can say that Insas excalibur/mk 1C is not only an extremely reliable but also a practicable rifle in trying Indian condition because when all the glossy and more fancy foreign rifles failed it passes IA trial. But it's not in service with IA mainly due to its sudden re-requirement of more heavier round 7.62 nato instead of lighter 5.56 Nato. This sudden requirement of caliber change is often termed as shifting of goalposts. IA has changed its requirements from a 7.62 to 5.56 in the past and vice versa recently...sometime multicalibar....all the time drdo/arde/ofb chased its caliber requirements IA changes it to what not..now OFB 7.62 Nato rifle which is based on the insas mk1c is selected by IA. What remains to be seen is another caliber change to 6.5 mm since mciws/AAR can also fire 6.8 mm round.

50 caliber bullets are not ridiculous for assault rifles. .50 Beowulf and .458 Socom AR15s are readily available. .50 AE and .500 S&W magnum are even handgun cartridges. Now the case sizes are a different story.

Had an opportunity to speak to a young scientist from one of the DRDO labs...he put things succinctly reg our MIC, reg scientists - their aspirations, their hope n despair... he put in nutshell wat ails our military (most which we already know)....he said the reason we developed strategic platforms successfully (strategic missile, ABM, n-sub and associated tech like radar, propellent, mini nuclear reactor) on our own was because no nation on earth will sell it n we have quality scientists..no syndicate to jeopardize projects....if we can build strategic systems on our own... Less challenging tactical systems (Arjun, Tejas, artillery, rockets, transporters)and bread n butter systems like sniper, hmg, ciws, should be a cake walk....but India still imports these lowly tactical systems because of decades old well oiled syndicate that pervades corridors of power - MOD and Tri service with their well placed agents... promising systems were smothered to death by sabotage by using their stooges (arjun- CVRDE scientists had to fit surveillance system during user trials) and by constantly shifting goal posts had made zoombies of these patriotic scientists....some systems we know (eg..arjun)....some systems we don't even know in public forums......a generation of brilliance, innovations lost....Parrikar was an answer to their prayers...gave them a lot of hope...u can see it in there faces when they talk about this golden period..a lot of changes happened in the labs..now future of our MIC is uncertain...will it relapse into the bear hug of our import lobby or trudge along the indigenous course chartered by strong man Parrikar... everything hinges on our next Def Min, they feel we need some one in the likes of Parrikar to weild the indigenous stick with gusto to tame this decades old import syndicate cancer...otherwise we would be the only country in post cold war to design develope deploy an ABM but still rooting for foreign rifle.....hope our Def ministry don't go the way of our another bemoth Indian railways..Suresh Prabhu was not able to tame the bureaucracy n we are paying in blood of innocents...
