I would not feel comfortable moving aircraft on that starboard gangway.
I don't think that deck extension was made to park aircraft. That was basically a deck extension over the hull, and I guess it was done to balance out the ship.

I have seen it used in 3D modelling so I assume they plan on parking aircraft there. It is one of only a few places out of the way to do so.

Induction of INS Vikramaditya

The aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya is yet to delivered to the Indian Navy. The ship was put to sea for trials from June to September 2012. During the sea trials over 108 days, the main propulsion plant could not complete the 'full power trials' due to defects encountered on 'boiler furnace brickwork' at higher speeds.

The aircraft carrier commissioning in the Indian Navy is now scheduled in the last quarter of 2013.

The final cost of the Project agreed upon in March 2010 is 2.3 billion USD. The reason for increase from the initial cost decided in January 2004 was due to increase in the scope of the repair and modernization work.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Sivasami C and Shri Sushil Kumar Singhin Lok Sabha today.

Interesting stuff...

Overhead shot of the Indian Navy Carrier showing the INS Vikramaditya berthed at the Sevmash Dockyards in Severodvinsk, Russia.

The date indicates the photograph was taken on October 25, 2012, after the the warship completed its maiden sea trials in September.

The Sevmash Shipyard was responsible for refurbishing the warship, turning an Aircraft-carrying Cruiser [Admiral Gorshkov] into a conventional Aircraft Carrier [INS Vikramaditya]. If one visits the co-ordinates [64.58, 39.8091] using Google Earth, & uses its 'Historical Imagery' feature, one can witness the warship being turned from the former into the latter. The latest satellite imagery in the software is dated the 21st of August 2011.

Not sure if this has been posted earlier.

Video of Mig-29K landing on INS Vikramaditya. That's a scary way of landing. 10 times more difficult to land on Air craft carrier than normal landing.

MiG-29K landing on the deck of the INS Vikramaditya (former Soviet aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov). Tests were conducted in the Barents Sea, in 2012. The pilot was Sergey Korotkov, General Director of JSC "Russian Aircraft Corporation "MiG".

India unlikely to fine Russia for delay in warship delivery

-IANS/RIA Novosti

India is unlikely to bill Russia for the delay in the delivery of the refitted aircraft carrier Vikramaditya caused by engine problems last year, said Viktor Komardin, deputy general director of Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

The Vikramaditya, which is already years behind its original 2008 delivery date, was to have been handed over Dec 4, 2012, but sea trials in September revealed that the ship's boilers were not fully functional.

"In theory, India has the right to do so (to impose a fine). But we believe that we will find a mutually beneficial solution to this problem in a friendly atmosphere. Actually, we already have, but for now, we're saying that we will," Komardin said at LIMA-2013 (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition) in Malaysia.

India and Russia signed the original $947-million deal in 2004 for the purchase and refit of the carrier, but delivery has already been delayed twice, pushing up the cost of refurbishing the ship twice over to $2.3 billion.

Defense News website reported earlier in the year that New Delhi had showed signs of impatience over the Vikramaditya's tortuous refit and demanded compensation from the Russians at a meeting in October 2012 for the latest delay in delivery. The Russians rejected that claim, saying the parts that failed had been bought by the Indian Navy.

The Vikramaditya was originally built as the Soviet Project 1143.4 class aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov. The Project 1143.4 carriers and a class of destroyers with the same engines suffered a history of boiler failures during their service lives.

The ship was laid down in 1978 at the Nikolayev South shipyard in Ukraine, launched in 1982, and commissioned with the Soviet Navy in 1987. In 1994, the Gorshkov sat in dock for a year for repairs after a boiler room explosion. In 1995, it briefly returned to service but was finally withdrawn and put up for sale in 1996.

The ship has a displacement of 45,000 tons, and an endurance of 13,500 nautical miles (25,000 km) at a cruising speed of 18 knots. It will have an air wing consisting of Russian-made MiG-29K jet fighter planes and Kamov Ka-31 early warning radar helicopters.

The Liaoning originated from Ukraine, not Russia, and has been sitting in a Chinese shipyard since 2002. The Vikra deal was signed in 2004. How could the Liaoning have possibly delayed the Vikra?

Even the Gorshkov (now Vikramaditya) originated in Ukraine, FYI; rather Ukrainian SSR, to be precise, which was part of the USSR. So what's your point?

Ready to induct MiG squadron in may, India awaits carrier

With the first squadron of carrier-based fly-by-wire MiG-29 K fighters to be formally inducted into the navy next month, India is now keeping its fingers crossed on Russia delivering the 45,000-tonne INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier by 2013 end, after a delay of over five years. The Admiral Gorshkov warship will be put on trial on Barents Sea between May and July and commissioned by Sevmash shipyard on White Sea in November 2013.

Government sources said the 2012 "boiler furnace brickwork" problem, encountered in seven of the eight boilers, had been rectified and the Naval Headquarters believes that the ship — modification and refitting of which would cost around $2.3 billion — will be on India's western seaboard by November-December this year.

With India's sole aircraft carrier — the 54-year-old INS Viraat — undergoing an overhaul and scheduled to join active duty by mid-2013, there is urgency in the acquisition of Vikramaditya as the Chinese PLA Navy will put its aircraft carrier Liaoning on high sea trial this year.

Acquired as junk named Varyag from Ukraine, Liaoning— refurbished at the Dalian shipyard — is expected to acquire combat capability within two years.

As a first step towards formally acquiring Vikramaditya, 16 aircraft of Russian MiG-29 K fighters will be commissioned into the Indian Navy in Goa on May 11.

While this squadron of multi-role fighters will be christened 303 squadron, the navy will acquire another 29 aircraft for its second squadron.

The new aircraft carrier will be based at Karwar in Karnataka under the Western Naval Command and will give India the much needed long legs in the Indian Ocean region.

"The delivery of INS Vikramaditya figured in summit meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Delhi on December 24, 2012. We hope that high sea aviation and speed trials of INS Vikramaditya would be smooth," said a defence ministry official.
