they are only 3+1 in service... but we initially brought 30+10...
do you think just a small number could defend itself?
but INS Viraat initial capacity is 20 [ aircraft + Helli's]... may be have just 10 of them we have... could add some no of LCH or any Attack Helli to make it 20..

no worries mate just got an Idea thats all....
I thought IN has 11 harriers left behind which are undergoing upgrades by HAL. In which case the INS Viraat carry the 11 harriers and N-LCH/ N-MCH helos for an expeditionary force?

Does anyone have any idea what Vikramaditkya's self-defense armament is going to be? I figure that it will be armed with at least 16-32 Barak point-defense missiles along with a handful of point-defense guns. Unfortunately, I have not read anything conclusive about the carrier's armament. It is my understanding that INS Vikrant will be armed with four 76mm Oto Melara Super Rapido automatic cannons along with Barak SAM's though.

I assume there will be AK-630 or Kashtan with Barak SAM, Probably 76mm With Special Ammunition..

From the above mentioned wiki
According to the report, the United States obtained an assurance that the naval ship could not be used for any offensive purposes, and had the right to regularly inspect it.
Another meaning is the ship can be used only for Training and Humanitarian mission, literally its not a warship but a peaceship :heh:

I just forgot the news link but the heading was something like this:
" US Ships comes with strings attached".

Captain Ahuja, a seasoned Sea Harrier fighter pilot, is the first Indian pilot in the "new mould" to be carrier qualified to fly CTOL jets. He got his wings of gold in May last year. He flawlessly trapped his jet ten times on the USS Enterprise to achieve that.

They where trained on an American carrier which have steam catapults and not ski-lifts. I wonder what was the need for that.

Testing Indian aircraft carrier in Barents Sea

The 45,000 tons and 273 meter long ship is expected to undergo testing in the Barents Sea in the course of March, a source associated with the Russian military industrial complex told Itar-Tass. In addition, the ship will undertake a 3,5 month test expedition

Then, on 4 December, the ship will be handed over to the Indian Navy, the source says.

It has taken the Sevmash yard more than eight years to complete the extensive upgrade of the vessel. The yard signed a contract with Indian authorities in 2004. However, it soon turned out the the yard was incapable of meeting neither timelines, nor cost frames.

The modernization of the vessel dragged out in time and became a headache in Russian-Indian relations.

The vessel, which in Russia has carried the name «Admiral Gorshov», will in India be known as the «Vikramaditja». The ship entered service in the Soviet Navy in 1987 under the name «Baku». It was taken out of service in 2004, after which the Indian Navy announced its interest in its takeover.

The upgrades of the ship has cost more than €1.66 billion.

The aircraft carrier has capacity to house up to 16 Mig-29K fighter aircrafts, as well as a number of Mig-29KUB aircrafts and up to ten helicopters, Vedomosti reports. As part of the deal with the «Vikramaditja», India also ordered a total of 29 Mig-29K/KUB fighter jets.

Only 16 Mig-29K fighters? That's just one squadron! I thought the number was closer to the 29 IN was buying.
