Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya finishes trials in Russia, delivery to India in mid-November

NEW DELHI: After a long running saga of hard-nosed negotiations since the late-1990s, cost escalations, refit delays and mishaps, aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya has finally completed its extensive sea trials in Russia. The 44,570-tonne warship, or the refurbished Admiral Gorshkov, is now all set to be handed over to India in mid-November.

Defence ministry sources on Tuesday said INS Vikramaditya has "now successfully" finished its series of "sustained full-power and aviation trials" in the White and Barents Seas. "The carrier will now head back to the harbour at Severodvinsk. It will then be made ready for the commissioning on November 15. It will reach Indian shores, with an Indian crew commanded by Captain Suraj Berry, in early-2014," said a source.

India has paid $2.33 billion for Vikramaditya's refit, instead of the original $974 million earmarked in the January 2004 contract under which the carrier was to be originally delivered by August 2008. India is also spending another $2 billion to induct 45 Russian MiG-29K naval fighters to operate from the decks of INS Vikramaditya and the under-construction INS Vikrant, which too has been delayed at the Cochin Shipyard till at least end- 2018.

Given the huge delays in both the projects, the Navy will continue to flog its old warhorse, the 54-year-old INS Viraat, which is left with just 11 Sea Harrier jump-jets to operate from its deck, till 2018. The delays have also derailed the Navy's long-stated aim to operate two full-fledged carrier battle groups (CBGs) anytime soon, as was earlier reported by TOI.

INS Vikramaditya was to be inducted into the Indian Navy by last December, as per the then re-revised timeframe, but serious engine and boiler malfunctions during the trials delayed the delivery by another year.

With the Mumbai harbour not capable of handling INS Vikramaditya, the mammoth warship will be based at the newish Karwar naval base in coastal Karnataka, which has undergone its Phase-I development at a cost of Rs 2,629 crore. The government recently also approved the Phase-IIA expansion of Karwar, which gives India both strategic depth and operational flexibility, at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore.

What does this mean for our fleet - Alexander Gorbenko

In the Barents Sea has successfully completed a test cycle of aircraft carrier "Vikramaditya". Now come to an end carrier-based aircraft flight tests. On board the ship take off and land on the deck MiG-29K/KUB. For the first time committed the night landing on an aircraft carrier. End tests aviation-technical systems. In the near future aircraft carrier will be transferred to the Indian Navy. Due to this the Indian Navy will have new opportunities - it will be aircraft carrier.

Now what does "Vikramaditya" for us. This ship is actually built from scratch for the Indian Navy on the basis of a set TAVKR "Baku". The modernization of the warship to the extent not held anywhere in the world. Sergey Novoselov, head of production MTC "Sevmash", believes that it would be easier to build a ship again. At the same time experts "Sevmash" completely no experience in building aircraft carriers. All Soviet aircraft carriers were under construction and commissioning of the territory, now separated from Russia. "Vikramaditya" - this is the first aircraft carrier built by us in the North. It was necessary not only Indians, but also to us. Now we can build such ships and for themselves. Successful tests of "Vikramaditya" leave no doubts about it. Thus, we have restored the reproduction of another class of weapons that had been lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
But that's not all.

We now have not only aircraft able to operate from the deck, and not just the ships from which aircraft can take off. We have a living experience of the operation and application of this technology. This experience we were getting long and hard. And luckily, he was not lost. Accumulated and communicated to the fighting services TAVKR "Admiral Kuznetsov". Therefore, India will now get not only the ship and aircraft, but also experience the Russian sailors and airmen. The other day, took control of the aircraft carrier Commodore Barry. Now Indian sailors under the leadership of the White Sea Naval Base sailors begin to master the ship.

Since India is increasing the capacity of its armed forces. Similarly, by talking and China earlier to finish the TAVKR Soviet "Varyag" and is now introducing it into operation. True, China passes this way more than their own, and therefore Chinese sailors and airmen are waiting for many more difficulties. However, for countries that seek to occupy a leading position in the future, it is necessary to develop the armed forces - or they simply will not give up those who now dominate the world. Strengthening of statehood and strengthening the defense - is almost synonymous.

China and India until recently was hardly developed countries - only the Soviet Union could challenge the Western world in terms of advanced technology and the power of the armed forces. But today we have to recover from the disaster. And in a sense we are on a similar path. Some, such as aircraft carriers, we are able to create their own in the recent past. Now we are again able to build such ships. Thanks to the cooperation Indians were able to reduce the time required to obtain a combat-ready military units. And we have restored the possibility of industry (manufacturing complex was actually re-created). Now it remains to use the existing experience, and opportunities for the industry itself.

I will be least surprised if Russians refuse to handover the ship to us and keep it for themselves. I will also not be surprised if they will retain full $2.33billion and instead offer us some other junk at three times the price for the money paid for this scrap.

On July 3, the Vikramaditya, refurbished on behalf of the Indian Navy, sailed to the White Sea for repeat trials (after repairs on its steam boilers were completed). This time around, the power plant was beyond reproach – the ship achieved the required 29 knots while demonstrating good manoeuvrability.
This was followed by joint trial missions with the Northern Fleet's naval aircraft at the Barents Sea. The MiG and the Sukhoi aircraft performed daytime and night-time take-offs and landings, with different sets of armaments and fuel loads. According to unofficial reports, both the equipment and the people operating it performed brilliantly. In any case, the customer's representatives were on hand to witness the action and were happy with what they saw.

During its return trip, on the White Sea, the ship once again went full steam ahead at the request of the Indian side, achieving 29.5 knots to meet the design specifications. According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta sources, the ship also went full steam in reverse at 15.2 knots. The commander of the Russian crew, Captain Igor Ryabko, and Indian Navy Commodore Suraj Berry took turns at the controls.
Once the Vikramaditya arrives at Sevmash, the shipyard's workers will get down to preparing the ship for official delivery to the customer. A special handover ceremony has been tentatively scheduled for November 15.

Informed sources tell RIR that the Vikramaditya will reach India's west coast by the middle of January 2014.

Maybe before next Republic Day we may have the Viki !!!
