There are three main configurations of aircraft carrier in service in the world's navies, divided by the way that aircraft take off and land:

Catapult-assisted take-off but arrested-recovery (CATOBAR): these carriers generally carry the largest, heaviest, and most heavily armed aircraft, although smaller CATOBAR carriers may have other limitations (weight capacity of aircraft elevator, etc.). Three nations currently operate carriers of this type: ten by the United States, and one each by France and Brazil for a total of twelve in service.

Short take-off but arrested-recovery (STOBAR): these carriers are generally limited to carrying lighter fixed-wing aircraft with more limited payloads. STOBAR carrier airwings, such as the Sukhoi Su-33 and future Mikoyan MiG-29K wings of the Admiral Kuznetsov are often geared primarily towards air superiority and fleet defense roles rather than strike/power projection tasks, which require heavier payloads (bombs and air-to-ground missiles). Currently, only Russia possesses an operational carrier of this type. China has rebuilt the sister ship to the Admiral Kuznetsov and has built a domestic Su-33 clone; this carrier is currently in commission for experimentation and training. Russia is also preparing a similar rebuilt carrier formerly of the Kiev class for India.

Short take-off vertical-landing (STOVL): limited to carrying STOVL aircraft. STOVL aircraft, such as the Harrier Jump Jet family and Yakovlev Yak-38 generally have very limited payloads, lower performance, and high fuel consumption when compared with conventional fixed-wing aircraft; however, a new generation of STOVL aircraft, currently consisting of the F-35B has much improved performance. This type of aircraft carrier is in service with one each for India and Spain and two for Italy making four total in active carrier service; the UK and Thailand each have one active STOVL carrier but both no longer have any operational STOVL aircraft in inventory. Some also count the nine US amphibious assault ships in their secondary light carrier role boosting the overall total to fifteen.

MiG-29K/KUB made the first night landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier "Vikramaditya" in the tests in the Barents Sea
Updated at 11:38
This is the general director of RAC "MiG" Sergei Korotkov. The largest export contract in the sphere of military-technical cooperation to modernize the "Admiral Gorshkov" sold to the Indian Navy, was imprisoned in Russia in 2004 and stipulated that Russia will modernize the ship for $ 750 million and put the Indian carrier aviation in the same amount, notesRIA Novosti.
Originally planned transfer of the ship to the customer in 2008, but because of the increased volume of work deadlines repeatedly shifted. Earlier ceremony of transfer of "Vikramaditya" has been scheduled for December 4, 2012. However, during the next stage of testing the ship in September revealed a number of problems. Because of this transfer period has moved on in 2013.
- Corporation "MiG" has entered into additional agreement with the Indian company for $ 55 million
"Right now, we are finishing the test aircraft maintenance systems, aircraft carrier" Vikramaditya "Four days ago, produced on his deck a night landing - one of the most difficult elements of the test. Prior to that we were flying only at dusk"
- Korotkov told reporters Wednesday at MAKS .
He added that the company MiG today had already completed its testing program on "Vikramaditya" and now provides delivery of aviation hardware ship under contract for "Sevmash".
"We hope that somewhere between 15 and 20 September, we will finish the job. Everything is going well, according to plan,"
- said Korotkov, adding that the flight test program began in early August.
- At MAKS-2013 demonstrated for the first time the Mi-38 with Russian engines

Chapter Corporation reported that the RAC "MiG" this year will put India's six MiG-29K fighters under contract in 2010 for 29 aircraft.
"Right now in India operated 21 aircraft. Under contract until 2015, we have to put 29 aircraft. Last year, four aircraft were delivered, this year we have delivered one aircraft to deliver six more," - said Korotkov.
He noted that the next two years, the supply will be approximately equal parts. The contract for the supply of 29 MiG-29K/KUB was concluded in March 2010 for $ 1.5 billion.
In addition, Korotkov said that the RAC "MiG" is ready to execute a contract for the supply of 37 MiG-35, which had previously been decided to reschedule.
"We have documents to sign this contract, passed on May 23 this year, and the second time. we were ready, and I declare this. We are now ready for this contract. When we say that we have not had any" OKRovskuyu "work then we were nobody and did not order "- said Korotkov.
- "Golden Eagles," "Swifts" and "Russian Knights" opened the summer program of the MAKS-2013
Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov sooschil that the transfer of purchasing 37 MiG-35 in 2013 for 2016 related to the unwillingness of the industry to fulfill this contract.

On July aboard the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya project 11430 villages in Severodvinsk combat helicopter Ka-31P, otshvartovalsya ship from the pier of "Sevmash" (Chief Executive Officer Michael A. Budnichenko). During the month, in the White Sea took his test.

To date, the first phase of the factory aircraft carrier sea trials. "So far everything is going well", - says Igor E. Leonov responsible deliverer ship.

At the first stage of testing basically walked down the main power plant (power plant) and the ship's systems. Summer program was carried out in parallel with the Ka-31P. Helicopters family of Ka-27 flights over the ship complied with, including electronic test equipment for aircraft carrier takeoffs and landings with its deck. "We are very pleased with how the team worked" Kamov "test led by Yuri Aleksandrovich Kuznetsov", - says Leon.

To test the radar equipment to address the management of the Ministry of Defense of Russia was isolated A-50 aircraft. His crew performed the tasks, and gave a positive assessment of the ship's radar.

Right on schedule, August 4, 2013 the second phase of the factory running tests with flying and landing on the deck of the MiG-29K. To ensure their return to the North experts RAC "MiG". Held the first meeting with the representatives of the main developers of the complexes and the chairman of the selection committee on aviation assets, Major-General Igor Sergeyevich Kozhina. Hero of Russia, the current carrier-based pilot, his position - head of naval aviation of the Russian Navy.

Flights began on August 5. Among them involved aircraft was and Su-33 naval aviation of the Northern Fleet. "Drying" performed circled the aircraft carrier to test the operation of its aircraft maintenance systems with simulation approach without touching. Russian fighter drove hero Colonel Oleg Mutovin of glycerol Chkalov.

This year MiG-29K/KUB landing on the deck were first implemented on August 6. "We are now at the stage of preparation for night flights," - said Leon. Address issues related to the provision of take-offs and landings at night, including a full combat load. For this purpose, the MiG-29K with hull numbers 204 and 941 models are suspended central and two underwing fuel tanks, missiles Kh-35E and F-73E.

An important phase of testing was held on August 16. Taking off from the airfield "Severomorsk" test pilots RAC "MiG" was put on the MiG-29K deck with a full load and get "credit". Pro scheduled for the end of August the test Leonov says: "Now we have to start to work out the MiG-29K with a full load to reiterate that the aircraft with a maximum take-off weight can take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier."
In August, made a total of nine MiG-29K landing on the deck. Test pilots RAC "MiG" Mikhail Belyaev, Sergei and Andrei Rybnikov Shishov expertly piloted aircraft, perform confidently approach and engagement on the arresting gear cables, as well as the ups with the use of nasal jump. Particularly pleased that Andrew Shishov himself from Severodvinsk, and today obletyvat ship that got a second life in his hometown.

The agreed with the customer acceptance of the ship program includes more than fifty credits takeoffs and landings. Most of them have already been made in last year's campaign aircraft carrier. Is being formed for the remaining flight mission sorties.

"From the RAC" MiG "we have no problems. We are working together very smoothly. On an aircraft carrier are representatives of the Directorate RAC "MiG" Sergei Vasilievich Shal'nev and Igor Malikov. We are grateful to all the technical crew on board under the leadership of Alexander Vladimirovich Chumakov, "- said Leon. A team receives planes, preparing them for flight is the flight mission.

"Russia is trying to both" MiG ", involved in the testing of aircraft carrier, based on the ship, and not on a coastal airport. Indians approve of this approach. They repeatedly asked the Russian side that the planes were on board "- continues our source. This gives the opportunity to observe the Indian military the full range of services, training aircraft and the pilots to fly the aircraft carrier.

At the same time, work on the subject of the MiG-29K - only a small portion of the total test program aircraft carrier. To ensure the launching and receiving aircraft, the main ship-board systems to operate without disruption. Most issues are solved by the complex "Resistor" - a complex of modern electronic system that provides landing aircraft. Much attention is being paid to combat information control system (CICS). Her final check has to be done in the Barents Sea.

At the time of the conversation with Leonov, "Vikramaditya" was on the roads of the port of Severomorsk. "Notably through the Commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Vladimir Korolev. We almost always give the green light for all polygons and the forces of security testing, "- said Leonov.

The commander - Captain First Rank Igor V. Ryabko. The senior naval officer on board - Alexander P. Shevchenko. "He has a very rich experience, since a long time commanded TAVKR" Admiral Kuznetsov ", - says Leon. By decision of the commander of the Russian Federation Council, to assist the flight of the tests on the ship is Colonel Youri Anischenko, deputy commander TAVKR "Smith" on the aircraft.

Marching headquarters manages Admiral Igor Golovchenko - the commander of the 16th Brigade of surface ships White Sea naval base. As required by "Vikramaditya" arrives chairman of the selection committee, Rear Admiral Sergey Popov.

Currently, the aircraft carrier is about two thousand people, including an Indian crew and a group of inspectors, the crew of the Russian Navy and commissioning team of industry. On the bridge with the officers of the Navy are Russian and Indian. As long as they are permitted to only watch. In the presence of Russian specialists they learn to control your ship. By the end of the ship's practices fall they should be trained and supervised by our move from observation to management.

As soon as the (planned - in mid-November) over the "Vikramaditya" rise Indian flag to control the ship, keep watch will only Indian troops. If all goes according to schedule, and in December the Russian aircraft carrier will leave the water, heading for India on board is of the order of two hundred citizens of Russia. This commissioning team, "Sevmash" along with major contractors. In addition to the warranty team, a member of this team, at the request of the Indian side included a number of experts in various fields. But from the Russian military on the ship at the time of sending it to the shores of India, no one is - the crew of the Navy Russia fully come down to the shore.

Currently, the number of Indian crew on board of a few hundred people. Before the end of the month, this figure will rise to nearly a thousand. And just when leaving the Severodvinsk crew will have regular number - 1326 people. When the aircraft carrier will be in the final of the Indian Navy, it will also air group (for regular maintenance kit aircraft of up to 34 aircraft), with which the number of troops on board to grow by 500-700 people.

Currently, pilots in the Indian crew is deputy commander of Berry (Suraj Berry, senior officer, commanding officer) on aviation captain of the first rank Bewley. An experienced military pilot, he has a great touch on the Sea Harrier. A group of inspectors engaged in aviation-themed Commodore Ahuja - also a good pilot, with the skills to manage the MiG-29. A team of inspectors led by Rear Admiral Hari Kumar.

"Vikramaditya" - the ship-handsome, remarkably controlled. Rate reached 29.2 knots. Made circulation at speeds of 24 knots, with a rudder 30 degrees, said Leon. Tests have shown that the aircraft carrier is able to turn with a radius of about 450 meters. The Indian side requested for completion of all previously identified trials in the White Sea once again to develop full speed.

From the only aircraft carrier in the Russian Navy - "Admiral Kuznetsov" Project 1143.5, the Indian ship of Project 11430 is not much different in terms of ship's systems and equipment GEMs. On the "Vikramaditya" they - domestic. In this case, the aircraft carrier has a line of systems of Indian and Western origin, assigned to the installation by the customer. And it works in conjunction with Russian equipment.

Thus, a program of repair and refurbishment TAVKR "Gorshkov" in the AV "Vikramaditya" has shown that the domestic industry is able to create such vehicles. And this despite the fact that the repair and conversion of the heavy cruiser to an aircraft carrier requires a tremendous effort. Carriers easier to build from scratch with quality documentation, new equipment and reliable suppliers. "Sevmash" in a position to build the ship the next project for eight years, which is consistent with international practice - says Leon.

To him may be added. India has an extensive national program for the creation of a powerful aircraft carrier fleet. However, according to recent reports in the local press, the first such ship's own construction is not expected in service before 2020. Once own shipbuilders delay, why India once again not to seek help from the Russian side? Domestic fleet aircraft carriers are also needed. Severodvinsk shipbuilders and their allied proven that they can create them. When developing a new program with a promising its implementation to the "Sevmash" better from the beginning to focus on the use of nuclear power plant. "Sevmash" has extensive experience in the construction of submarines with nuclear reactors and it is able to produce good quality new aircraft carrier with a nuclear power plant.

Does this supports your argument??

As photos are posted before, then why you are coming to same conclusion ..

Still have my doubts. That could mean the MTOW when launched from a Ski Jump Aircraft Carrer. Not the MTOW when operating from Air Fields. In addition the quote says "we have to start work out the Mig-29K with a full load to reiterate that the aircraft with a maximum take-off weight can take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier"

Sound unconfirmed to me........

Russia to hand over Vikramaditya on Nov. 15

Aircraft carrier is now on sea trials and expected to return to Sevmash Shipyard

INS Vikramaditya will be handed over to the Indian Navy on November 15 at a formal ceremony in the Russian northern seaport of Severodvinsk on the White Sea.
The delivery date was confirmed at talks Defence Secretary R.K. Mathur held in Moscow on Monday, according to informed sources.

A high-level Indian defence delegation paid a one-day visit to Moscow to prepare an annual session of the Indo-Russian Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation that will meet in Russia next month under the chair of the two Defence Ministers.

The upgraded and retrofitted aircraft carrier is now completing sea trials and is expected to return to the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk in the next few weeks.

The ship was to be delivered last December, but failed the sea trials after its boilers and some other systems malfunctioned. This time, all systems performed flawlessly, including daytime and night takeoff and landings by MiG-29K deck fighter planes, the sources said.

The sides were tight-lipped on the issue of India acquiring a second nuclear submarine from Russia, but the sources confirmed that Moscow was willing to lease another Akula class submarine if India paid for completing its construction. The submarine has been lying half-built at the Amur Shipyard in the Russian Far East since it was mothballed in the 1990s for lack of funds.

On the recent accident in which INS Sindhurakshak sank after rocked by explosions, the Russian side agreed to provide expert assistance for raising the submarine and carrying out its technical inspection.

Russia will also beef up its team of 100 engineers, now deployed in Vishakhapatnam in order to speed up midterm repairs to INS Sindhudhvaj and INS Sindhushashtra. The Russian side also offered to have two more Indian Navy Kilo class submarines undergo midterm repairs in Russia, the sources said.

In reviewing progress of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft, the sides noted with satisfaction the completion of preliminary design phase earlier this year. It is hoped that a contract for detailed design could be signed before the end of the year if the sides sort out the issue of costs.

Thats one hell of a carrier. INS Vikrant2 would be a good fit also. But i have one question why does the Mig29k have a limited range, while the other aircrafts of its class have that advantage. Is it so fuel guzzling??

I guess more or less it is the same as that of a Super Hornet or the Rafale, the two other aircrafts in it class. If you are talking about the Su-33 or the J-15 well they are larger aircrafts than the MiG.

Deck the MiG-29 aircraft of the Northern Fleet performed night flying with "Vikramaditya"

Carrier-based fighter MiG-29K/KUB completed a series of test flights from the deck of an aircraft carrier "Vikramaditya" (former aircraft carrier "Admiral Gorshkov" the Northern Fleet), said in a press release of the Russian Aircraft Corporation "MiG". In particular, the aircraft performed flights from the deck at night, and the pair-offs and landings with minimum intervals.

Flight program, held in conjunction with the Severodvinsk shipbuilding enterprise "Sevmash", in charge of the restructuring and modernization of the aircraft carrier commissioned by the Ministry of Defence of India. The flights were carried out in the framework of the ship commissioning program, which will be handed over to Indian Navy in November of this year. In addition to the night and the group flights, and flights MiG-29K/KUB performed with a maximum combat load.

"Flying from the deck of aircraft carrier completes an important stage in the life cycle of the aircraft carrier project and 11,430 MiG-29K/KUB program as a whole, that the Corporation" MiG "sells in the interest of the Indian Navy», ─ said General Director of RSK Sergey Korotkov. According to him, the next stage, which will be launched Corporation, will be training the pilots of the Indian Navy aircraft carrier-based fighter planes types MiG-29K/KUB.

The Ministry of Defence of India has acquired an aircraft carrier "Vikramaditya" and 16 MiG-29K/KUB in 2004. The delivery of these aircraft was completed in 2011, and in May 2013 the fighters came to the Indian Navy. In 2012, India and Russia signed a second contract to supply another 29 MiG-29K/KUB. The cost of the agreement amounted to 1.5 billion dollars.
