Despite relatively low car ownership, our cities are plagued by traffic jams
India simply lacks the infrastructure needed to handle high vehicle ownership
Yes. Our cities are shit. They have not built road infrastructure to accommodate growing middle class aspirations like cars. No government has done anything for urban development except smart cities which are not giant capex projects. If you look at China, even their Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are properly planned.

ayodhya redevelopment alone is costing 30,000 crores, imagine the costs for big cities. without recognising local govt financial resource constraints, conversation on this topic becomes half baked.

Completely agree. Takes giant amount of resources and money to properly urbanize. One estimate by world bank is that it takes $55 billion a year to make our cities livable. That is second only to our defense budget. I am disappointed that BJP has done nothing to get going on this - how to raise $50-60 billion a year for urban modernization, how to get people in cities to pay for the urban services. We already know local governments cannot do shit when it comes to urban development. Only very few cities can properly utilize funds and execute mega projects on their own. The central government has no choice but to step in. I hope in the 3rd term, a lot of focus is on urban infrastructure development. Middle class is being taken for granted in Bharath.

and don't forget the legal cases that are going to come up because houses and shops are going to demolished to make a road like the one in haldi's residential area. city redevelopment is mostly under the domain of CM, DM ,mayor, MLA and city redevelopment authority, centre does not come into picture unless railway station and airports are involved.

City redevelopment happens in time scales of decades in India, it always happens this way. hyderabad took almost 30 years, cyberabad alone took 30 years.

Correct. New laws must be passed that streamlines the entire process. Courts must be modernized and land records completely digitized so everything is accurate and there is no room for dispute. Dispute settlement in courts should take a maximum of 6 months. Once Compensation is fixed at a transparent and fair rate, no one should be allowed by courts to ask for excess compensation and their cases dismissed right away. Without fixing contracts and land disputes system, it is impossible to speedily develop our cities.

@Haldilal do the resident own most of the land in which they are squatting across Dharvi?

How will the court handle it?
In Delhi lots of bastis were legalized by Revdiwal.

Also local Babus authorize construction and legitimize houses, what to do about them.
Ya'll Nibbiars some is owned land some is railway land and most government land. Thos who own will get additional benefits of double size than the 350 Sq. Ft. Most commercial tenants and owner will get redevelopment at same site. And most of the tenants will be resisted to the wadala flat lands.

Its already happening everyday. Not a single day goes by without some factory in india exploding or catching fire, killing a few labourers. We need better enforcement of safety regulations. A big cause of industrial fires in India is due to short circuits. Keep an eye for Gujarat. The state has seen a massive investment in chemical factories. The new ones seem fine, but the ones built in the 90s are ticking timebombs. India needs its own OSHA with proper enforcement. Sadly our corrupt police and governments will instead make life of factories hell without any enforcement and lead to them shutting down

what i was referring to
